Dunstable Downs is great for views and paths for walking. Handy National Trust cafe with pretty awful National Trust food.

Amazing time had by all!!! We did the wand making and witch trail which the kids loved. It paired so well with our spooky afternoon tea in the cafe... lots of spooky treats that went down well. Staff were so attentive in the cafe and it was lovely that a whole area of the cafe had been reserved and set up to accommodate this. The staff couldn't do enough to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible. With two adults and 6 children/babies ranging from 7 to 14 weeks, it could have been chaos but it was so enjoyable thanks to the staff. One lady in particular saw me waiting in the queue with my 14 week old and took my order and said she would bring it to me so I didn't have to wait. She was so lovely and made us feel so welcome and special. Another lady offered to move our tables together so we could sit with our friends as we had booked separately- we didn't even have to ask! Super attentive and the food was delicious. The only suggestion I'd have for the afternoon tea would be to offer a lunch option for the adults too in addition to the option of coffee/tea and a cake. One older lady who was running the wand making activity was quite rude and kept making comments about pens being on the floor under our table. There was two pens and one lid under the table which was there before we sat down and other pens in the trays were all mixed up, some with no lids! The kids were sat down and behaving well and waiting patiently for the two adults to get round each of them to help cut and stick wands which was a bit tricky for the little ones. We did pick the pens up when she first made a comment and tried to show we were looking after everything and being respectful but we were trying to help the kids and enjoy ourselves and I also had my 14 week old strapped to my chest so couldn't keep bending down. We planned to tidy the table up at the end of the activity. Anyone with little kids will know it's mission impossible to clean up after them WHILST they are doing the activity! She kept making really rude comments about us, loudly to other staff members and everyone else there, so much so that another staff member came over to pick the pens up herself. She was really nice about it but at one point it felt like everyone was looking at us and it made us feel uncomfortable and ruined the enjoyment of such a lovely activity. I've never felt so much shame over pens before!!! I don't know whether this lady was a volunteer but it doesn't excuse the way she behaved. As an avid stationary fan and ex- teacher, I can understand her desire to keep the lids on the pens and to not mix the colours but not at the expense of the kids enjoyment or the sanity of the adults. I'm sure I'll end up having nightmares about pens with no lids tonight. Other than this, we had a wonderful time. Other lovely families enjoying their day and such lovely staff, with the exception of the 'Pens are life' lady! Thank you National Trust and Dunstable Downs. X

I just love it there. The view of the English country side is beautiful. The restaurant is busy but have a coffee and go for a walk. On the right day you'll see red Kyte birds paragliders gliders and lots of family's with kites all co existing. I always see lots of smiles up there.

I love this place, just only what I don't like that big parking is closed, because so many people coming evening time and no space for parking, but parking near cafe is closed. Hope maybe this they can change, to leave parking area open!!!

We visited on a Sunday morning. I would advise arriving early as by the time we left the parking area was quite busy.
The area has multiple routes for all abilities. We visit again

Today we were very fortunate to join a guided walk from The Chiltern Gateway Centre at Dunstable Downs which we found on the National Trust app. It was led by Geoff and his wife, Annette. We followed the Five Knolls Walk but there were other walks planned for the year ahead. We had a fantastic time all made better with Geoff and Annette's local knowledge of the downs and its history including Bronze age mounds, orange rolling down banks and a rifle range established in 1850s. There were fantastic views across 4 counties. The path was an all-weather path and there were excellent facilities for car parking and a well stocked, popular cafe. We plan to return.

The Downs is a great place, I have been going there nearly 60 years. But carpark is expensive for visitors that only want to go for an hour or two. Also visitor centre is an eyesore.

Lovely place for a walk and a decent cafe but way too many dogs. It’s about time the National Trust realised not everyone wants dogs sniffing and barking around them when they go for a cup of tea. Dogs are after all animals and should be treated as such. There are enough seats outside for people with dogs and should not be allowed in restaurants. They should also be kept on leads at all times while walking in the Downs.

You would need to get a train to Luton then the number 35 (Centrebus) to Dunstable Downs. The view up here is amazing so well worth a visit.

There is a hard path that runs from the new car park near the building accross the top of DDowns. You can take in the view which is stunning. The path is not flat however as it follows the natural formation. Other than this path all other paths are off road and more like tracks. Some of the fields may be ok but it would be weather dependant. Hope this helps. Its worth going, such a stunning place full of history.
Can we put our tent up on the grass?

Don't know but ask at the centre.
I want to go with my 1 year old but not sure if I should take a buggy or the baby backpack?

Backpack. Especially as it has rained a lot recently and overflow parking is on a field. This way you are not restricted to the path, but wear wellies and bare in mind that it is windy up there. Wrap up baby! Enjoy.

It was only ever the ones that escaped from Whipsnade Zoo that made it to the downs. They used to be seen from the B4506 (Dunstable Road) hopping up and down the hill but within the grounds of the zoo. Not seen them in this area for a long time but they are still wandering around the zoo itself.
Can you take BBQs to Dunstable downs?
