First solo hike and black combe was a challenge in the sweltering weather and for a novice like me but got to the top. Took the more direct and harder trek to the top.
Smashed the walk and got to the top. The views where spectacular. You could see for miles. Not much sign to show where you would need to go but I got there in the end. Seen a couple of more seasoned walkers and they helped give good advice. The views from the summit where wonderful. Was worth it

A walk with easy navigation on good paths and with no special hazards. My kids (6 and 8) enjoyed the walk, albeit the lower section was a steep enough climb to earn complaints and over-acting from my son). After an initial steep pull, the ascent flattens out into a glorious heather-clad stroll with great views in all directions. At the summit, we could see a panorama of the southern lake distict fells. We saw half a dozen other people despite it being in the summer holidays. The descent was wonderful, with the children flying ahead, but the steep parts were quite hard on the knees. We did the straight up and down from Whicham church. The alternative route from White Combe would have been better in terms of interest and in avoiding the steep start, but this would need a car at each end. In warm and dry conditions this walk is suitable for people without hillwalking equipment or experience.

Fabulous views all the way up and breathtaking from the summit. Th first half of the ascent was steep but with sea views whilst you pause to catch your breath. Less demanding closer to the top and the view of Scotland the lakes and the Isle of Man will be long remembered.

Whilst staying in the area (part of the roadmap out of lockdown holiday!) we decided to take in a decent hill walk. Coming from Derbyshire we thought yeah we can take on Black Combe! We parked at St Mary’s Church car park (left a donation as the lady was emptying the pot and thanked her very much for its use), and then made our way along the track next to the church, followed the Lane to the left and all the way up. I found a route straight up and back down again on Strava, but you can’t go wrong really, it’s a well used path in the right conditions. Our children our 14 years and nearly 12 and we have an active 2 year old Airedale Terrier, so we’re used to ‘big walks and big hills!’
Wow! We were not disappointed! The views all the way up are amazing! You can see Bootle, Barrow, all the seaside and then lots of fella in the distance once you get to the top.
The first section is definitely the worse! Loose stones pretty much upright hill! But don’t give up! It’s definitely worth keeping going to get all the way to the top and the trig point nestled in a little wall of slate. Absolutely glorious. The kids wanted to turn back many times on the way up! But they realised once we got to the top why we kept going and we’re so proud of their efforts! Younger children might find it tough going.
Equipment - decent shoes, hoodie, coat and water a must! It was a little rainy when set off, glorious sunshine in the middle and blowing a Gale at the top 🤣 There was even a little snow at the trig.
I’ve included pictures, but it’s defo one to see for yourselves 💖

Long overdue climb
We’ve holidayed locally a lot over the last 40 years, so last June as the first lockdown ended, took the plunge and climbed it.
It’s well worth it. Not a hard technical climb or a slog, or likely to be busy .
Easy safe parking around at the start.
Views can be hit and miss due to the influence of the sea.

We parked at st Mary’s church Whitbeck, all Google searches for Black Coombe mention Whicham church, which we never found so don’t know whether everyone else has got it wrong or we have !! We were very unsure how to find the track to the mountain, as all guides were very vague, but eventually decided to persue the road behind the church . This leads to a cattle grid , the gate of which hasn’t been opened since 1972, so we carried our dogs over the bars !!!! And straight after took a right turn onto a grassy path up the first shoulder of the hill . Then we went off track through heather to access the wide stone path on Black Coombe itself. We arrived at a cairn in heavy rain and mist so didn’t carry on to the stone structure that we had seen in pictures so don’t know how far away that was . Views of the glittering sea are lovely, don’t know about views from the other side as we never got there. Descent was very easy down the stone path. This brings you out directly onto the A595 , we turned right and after a mile , (bit scary , cars are fast and there’s no pavement ) brings you back to the church.

Parked near Wicham church(suggested donation for use). Walked up short steep route in dry, sunny and warm conditions. Potentially brilliant views but a little hazy today. Pace yourself as it is a steady, quite steep climb. Descending in wet or icy conditions could be very slippery. I was up and down inside 2.5 hours but would probably take more time on another occasion.

At 62 and not the fittest I climbed blackcombe last week . Stunning views in all directions. Took my time but took the harder route straight up. And then descended again. Would recommend the easy route if your a novice. The views at the top are incredible. Took some great shots on the camera. Scotland Ireland wales and the imposing Isle of Man. The views across the peaks of the Lake District belong on a postcard. This part of the lakes is very uncommercialised. I bought a caravan at Silecroft and now have this as a view from my window .

Black combe is in the south lakes (the untourist part) and its a great walk with a beautiful view of the sea, land, sky and mountains further afield
Its got a nice walk with a couple of strenuous bits towards the top and a cairn to pop a stone on
Not saturated with walkers and any you do see are friendly
Not a million miles away from eateries and pubs either

We've got a motorhome so can anyone suggest parking? Also is the route straight forward or do we need a map thanks

Hi
You can park your motor home at the Church in Whicham Valley for free. Plenty of space. Follow the footpath signs to the mountain and once on the mountain the path is very well worn all the way up. With an average pace you can be on the top in two hours and down in less than 1.
