Had a ride on this railway on Sunday 19th February 2023. Had a lovely ride but unfortunately spoilt by a rude abrupt " unprofessional guard on the 1510 return trip. We were a coach party, and told at Ravenglass by a member of staff to travel in the front two blue carriages. This was fine on the outward journey but on returning to the bue carriage, wheel chairs were loaded into the carriage. On asking the guard what was our position travelling again in this coach, he replied " You should not have travelled in this coach it's for wheel chairs and push chairs" I pointed out one of the railway staff at Ravenglass Had told us to travel in it. His most abrupt reply was " I am in charge this end" I am not in the habit of being spoken too in this manner and I am afraid spoilt the ride. Ravenglass Railway one of your guards need some customer care training.Given 3 stars because of the unprofessional guard.

Dear Des
Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your visit. I am truly sorry that your trip was spoilt by one of our staff members. We pride ourselves on our friendliness and good customer service so this is very disappointing to us.
We will be discussing this matter with the guard involved. I would be grateful if you could contact us at steam@ravenglass-railway.co.uk so we can discuss this incident further so I can take steps to ensure it does not happen again.
Once again thank you for taking the time to post the review. Whilst it is not something we want to hear it does enable us to do something about it.
Kind regards
Stuart @ R&ER

I cannot recommend this little gem highly enough!
I love a good steam train journey and adore the Lake District so, what’s not to love.
We got off the train at Dalegarth and had a lovely pint in the pub along the road…. Perfect afternoon!
It was a real delight

Had a great little trip to Dalegarth and back to Ravenglass on Boxing Day . Free mince pie and mulled punch. Lovely way to spend the day.

Extremely good day out, we walked from race glass to Dalegarth which was an intimate incline then steady flat footpath through woodland and field which took us about 3 hours.
Nice windmill at Dalegarth, minimal amount around we grabbed some lunch from the cafe which was nice and staff were friendly and accommodating.
Train back from Dalegarth to Ravensglass was amazing ! Steady pace which gave plenty of time to take in the great views around.
Would highly recommend to do !

Thank you for sharing your photos and your wonderful review. It looks like you walked up the Eskdale Trail from Ravenglass to Dalegarth. This is a great way to explore Eskdale and see some of the hidden gems of the Western Lake District.
November can be quite a strange time to visit as some of the local hostelries go to winter opening times but it is good to see that our cafe provided you with essential rations!
The afternoon trains back to the coast at this time of year offer really stunning light effects and the low sun really brings out the autumn colours.
Once again thank you for your review and photos and we will look forward to welcoming you back to the railway again in the future.
Very best regards

What an absolute gem of a place! A definite must see in the lakes. The whole place is so brilliantly done and the journey itself is wonderful. You can see how much effort has gone into saving the place from the beginning to the present day. The staff and volunteers were fantastic, so enthusiastic about everything. Everything was immaculate and so much information about every aspect of the history of the site. We had a great day out and are already planning to go back

Thank you for your superb review and sharing the photos of your visit. It looks like you had a super time. It is great to read that you found the staff to be enthusiastic and helpful. The staff are made up of both paid staff and volunteers and I know they will be pleased that you appreciated the effort they put in to ensure everything is beautifully presented.
Better still is that you still had a great time on what we a particularly grim day weather wise.
Once again thank you and we hope to see you at Ravenglass again soon!

We took the panoramic seating in Joan which was well worth it, comfy seats, lots of leg and bag room and inside but with openable windows to enjoy the scenery and that wonderful steam smell. The journey is very scenic through fields of cows and sheep and with lots of bird life to spot. We just did the return journey immediatly but had time for a bite to eat at Dalegarth or you can select a later return and enjoy the area around Dalegarth. You get to watch the turntable at each end. Ravenglass station is right next to the Cumbria Coast line and departures and arrivals on the steam railway work well with the mainline.
The museum at Ravenglass is very good with a good history of the construction of the railway, a few locos and a good description of how a steam engine works.

Dear Sam
Thank you for taking the time to post the review of your recent visit to us. Travelling in "Joan" is a really special experience. On the journey to Dalegarth you can see what our drivers are doing on the locomotive and on the way to Ravenglass you get to see the mountains disappearing into the distance...magic!
The railway is something of a haven for flora and fauna and as you found as well as farm animals you can see birds, occasional deer and if you are very lucky red squirrels.
Once again thank you for your review and we will look forward to seeing you here at the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway again in the future.
Kind regards

Thank you for posting your review and sharing your photos of your Cream Tea and Steam experience for two. Thank you too to your daughter for treating you! I am glad to read you enjoyed your Cream Tea and found in tasty. Autumn is one of the best times to ride on the railway. The autumn colours of the landscape are really brought out by the golden sun you get at this time of year.
It good to see you found time to visit Ravenglass Railway Museum. This attraction which is run by an independent charitable trust really helps set the scene about the history of our railway.
Once again thank you for your review and we hope to welcome you have to the railway again in the future,
Best regards

Oh the joys of steam railways, and this one is amongst the best. The lines runs through some of the most picturesque scenery imaginable, and is exceptional value. The staff are all friendly, the food and rink in the cafe also very good, and the museum is informative.

Thank you for your wonderful review and praise relating to our railway. I am pleased that you felt the experience we offer to be of exceptional value. It is not cheap sending old steam engines up a steep railway or maintaining the 7 miles of infrastructure we are custodians for.
Ravenglass Railway Museum is, as you found, to be well worth the visit and really helps set the scene of the railway and industry in this sleepy part of the Western Lake District.
Once again thank you and we will look forward to welcoming you back to the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway again in the future.
Kind regards

It's nice to be able to put a few good activities together for a day out, so here is a special suggestion, especially if you're based in the central lakes (eg Grasmere).
First, I asked my Satnav to give me the route to Wastwater, thinking it was going to take us on the normal but long 'horseshoe' route via Bassenthwaite. Instead, the brave Satnav sent us over Wrynose Pass and then Kirkstone Pass! Thankfully, we had a good car that could handle the steep terrain. Just take it steady, because it is an exilerating ride with breathtaking views. Once over these passes, you have a gentle ride through a lush valley to Wastwater and some more fantastic views. Tip: park at Nether Wasdale if you can and walk to Wastwater, to see the breathtaking views of Wastwater, Yewbarrow, Great Gable and Scafell. Then return to the car park and retrace the road back to the Ravenglass and Eskdale station at Dalegarth, for a wonderful return trip along this charming line, which is well worth a visit,(even in the rain) especially if you can book a seat on the wonderful 'Joan' Observation Car. Finally, after this wonderful day out, we returned along the 'horseshoe' route via Bassenthwaite, stopping for a lovely meal at the traditional country inn called The Pheasant Inn, one of the best Lake District Inns we have seen, as it breathes old English character. If you like a challenge, you will love this!
This suggested route is something very special for the western Lakes, but you will be glad you did it, if you allow yourself enough time to do it leisurely.

You certainly have a brave Sat - Nav! Thank you for taking the time to post a review and photos of your recent "Grand Tour" of the Western Lake District. Your Sat - Nav definitely treated you to some of the best views the lakes have to offer.
"Joan" certainly gives the opportunity to see our railway from a different perspective and the large viewing windows do help you appreciate the scenery in all weathers.
We do endorse your advice that this road trip, with a trip on our railway is well worth doing, but do allow enough time to appreciate it.
Once again thank you for posting your review and we hope to see you at the Ratty again on further adventures in Cumbria!
Kind regards

Yes probably about 20 mins walk . Level roads can be narrow but good visibility for walkers to see oncoming traffic
Hi, How long do you need at Eskdale? I'm trying to plan return times. Thank you!

It depends on if you like walking.
There is only a shop and cafe at the station, but you can spend a couple of hours walking in the area.

Hello hope everyone has had a nice Christmas 🎅 we have been given a voucher to use on this railway and are wondering about places to stay!! We are thinking of June as that is our wedding anniversary and will probably stay 2or 3 days!! Can anyone recommend a bed and breakfast or a very nice hotel!! Thank you 👍 Dom
Hi, we stayed at Woodend self catering but Paul & Jella do B&B there. I would imagine it would be very good and it's a beautiful peaceful location up on the fell. They are lovely people, so nice we have booked to go back for two weeks next year. It's only a short drive from the railway. We had a very nice lunch with good service at The Pennington in Ravenglass at the other end of the railway which is on the coast. There are other hotels and B&Bs in the area but I would research and book asap as it will get booked up early for June.
Regards,
Paul.
Hi, can somebody help me out with booking of First class observation Carriage? The prices are for return journey is £245 and single journey is £150/-. Are these prices per person or for a coach or family of four?
Thanks and regards.

Hi, the prices shown are for an exclusive hire of the Observation Carriage. For smaller parties there is a small surcharge of £5 per person for a single journey or £10 for a return journey.

Hi looking to go on the railway tomorrow but worried as you can’t book a ticket for a certain train time. Will it be very busy being a bank holiday - are we unlikely to get a space on the train?? Or is there often space, even on a bank holiday?
Thanks

Our journey took about 40 minutes and when we arrived at dale Garth we could have got straight on a train waiting to come back we would have been waiting at the station for about 15 minutes before setting off an example our train left at 13:21 and the train back we could have caught was at 14:25 if you get off and stay at dalegarth for a while there are later trains but adds time on I have a timetable in front of me but can’t take photo to show you

Hi, You failed to mention that the car park is actually £4.00 for the day
Which is actually Very Cheap.
If you are taking a return on the railway you will need at least 2 hours
If you are only using the cafe an hour at £1.00 should do.
I cant comment on your food but can only say that ours was excellent.
