Legend has it, that around 850 AD, an Irish holy girl, named Bega, fled from a forced marriage to a Viking Chief, landed at St Bees, and lived as a hermit. Norman settlers, over the next 200 years, called the area Kirkeby Begoc , "settlement by the church of Bega"... Nothing survives of this time, apart from the shafts of 2 crosses from the Viking period. over time, a small monastery was founded, being closed down by Henry VIII, in 1539. Since then it has gone under numerous alterations, and renovations.. Now it serves as a parish church, and also popular with tourists, and has many information boards, and history leaflets

We attended the Fridays at Five illustrated talk, by Chris Robson, that covers the history of St Bees and the Priory. It is a whistle stop tour of the key historical events and is delivered in an easy manner, laced with dry wit and charm. A very well spent half hour that whets the appetite for more. We thoroughly recommend this to old and young alike.

Melvyn Bragg wrote his version of her life, first given to us by the monks of this place in Norman times...this is is the stuff of fairytale and legend. St. Bega is a fascinating woman, known as the Apostle of the North. See her image in the lady chapel here. It is beautiful

This is a nice historic priory/abbey within an easy walk from the St. Bees center and many Bead and Breakfasts and the train station. Several old "coffins" are on display including one of a Teutonic Knight and his wife. Many very old graves in the nearby cemetary.

This is one of my favourite religious sites I’ve visited in Britain. The Norman door is stunning in person as is the Norse dragon carving in the archway facing the Norman door. This Priory just simply has a deeply calm and entrancing atmosphere about it. The interpretive signs in the Priory are very well done and a step above most self-guided type signs of this kind. They’ve installed movement-sensitive lighting above a lot of the displays which conserves energy and protects some of the more delicate exhibits, especially the one about St Bee’s Man. The churchyard has a very moving and simple monument to war veterans and a striking angel monument. I was truly moved by this place and can’t wait to return.

I love and admire church architecture in spite of being an atheist, and there is rare beauty to be found in some churches. So it was here...the interior is peaceful and stunning, and matched by the beauty of the stonemasons work.
How they managed to construct such beautiful buildings in times past is truly amazing....nearly as amazing as the reasons for doing so....all created for a myth of fairy tails supported by no evidence at all......my only hope before I adopt my wooden overcoat is that religious instruction is barred from being taught to children, until they reach the age of reason. Bless

This is must do when visiting St Bees. The history of the site is well set out within the ancient church which is just across the road from the school founded in the 1500s. Learn about St Bees man.
We had a great dinner at The Queens pub. Fish & chips and Cumberland sausage and mash. Really tasty. About 12 pds each.

A place of worship for nearly 900 years. Gorgeous, serene, calm & a lovely spot to give thanks for being alive whether religious or not. I walked up from St Bees beach on my own (left my husband & daughter) for some me time.
