Brilliant walk along the ridge. An effort to get up there, especially coming from Castleton, but well worth it.

even though it was raining and visibility was poor. Made it all the more exciting and fun. Definitely do it. Can be steep and uneven in places so make sure you are fit and have the right footwear.

Mam tor is just a short walk out of Castleton or if you're early you can get a space at the local car park. The sunrises up there are amazing.

Usual tourist honeypot, can be crowded. Not really worth visiting. The views are just ok, nothing special just some fields. It's not particularly high either.

We were lucky to have a sunny day in October with no wind. We started and ended our walk from Castleton. Walking firstly through fields and then up via the old collapsed road.
The first climb up Mam Tor isn't difficult. There's a great view of the winding road if you walk over to the left hand side as you walk up. At the top there's a marker and views in all directions. Stunning colours of the green fields, especially against the blue skies.
As you carry on following the Ridge you come to Back Tor. A little bit of a steeper climb on rocky path. At the top the views continue.
Keep going and you'll reach lose hill. You'll walk down this and find grazing sheep. The walk continues downwards through a tree lined path which takes your to Hope village where we couldn't help but have a pint in the Old Cheshire Cheese pub. Also a welcome toilet break as there are none on the walk.
Carry on up the road and just opposite Spar take the road by the church and then on your right there's a footpath that runs along the river for a small part and then into fields. The sun was coming down over the fields at this point. The path then appears and leads you back into Castleton.
Loved this walk. You can take it at a steady pace and the scenery is varied and gorgeous the whole way round.
Good shoes are needed if doing the full walk as there are some rocky/muddy steps in parts which were a bit slippery.

This is a great walk with excellent views all along the ridge. The climb to Mam Tor is quite steep but it is well made with steps in places. The whole route is well defined so no need to worry about getting lost!

A route that all the family can do. The path is very clear and safe, and the views are superb. Would recommend leaving a couple of hours to do the round trip.

I have a large dog, an Irish Wolfhound, who can’t navigate many small wooden stiles. I shy away from any walk that says stile, but find that get get over some larger stiles and often there are gets next to stiles. Would this walk be appropriate for him? At 81kg, we can’t lift him over...

As I recall there may be a couple of stiles further along the ridge towards Back Tor and Lose Hill, but the initial climb to Mam Tor and a fair bit of the ridge should be fine.
Is this walk good for my dog? Can he go off his lead?

Hi John,
I would keep your dog in a lead as there are steep cliffs on ether side of what is a ridge way.
Hope that helps Steve

Is there a circular walk? And/or how long does it take to walk it and walk back at a medium to fast pace

Yes. You can start in Castleton, walk up the Limestone Way (around the back of the castle); across to Mam Tor, along the ridge to Losehill, then back down to Castleton. There are lots and lots of variations. You could start from other points, too.
Hi we are planning to visit Mount Tor on next week. just want to ask you about the post code of the closest car park ?
thanks

About a half mile from Mam Tor is the Blue John Cavern, the post code for this place is S33 8WA. There is a car park nearby. (and café) The car park is immediately below Mam Tor

Hi, is this trail, or a section of the trail suitable for a toddler in a buggy? How steep it is? Or is there a section which is fairly flat and easy to access by car?

There is a good path though it is a bit rustic in places. It is a quite strenuous climb with Mam Tor rising to 1700ft (500+m) and I would guess that it could be a challenge with a buggy - especially if the weather turns bad. There is a car park that you could start from.
I didn't see any buggies when I did the walk and it was a popular day. Some parents carried small children in rucksack-type carriers.
I'm going to go to Mam Tor and Lose Hill next month. I'll go from Edale station to Hope station.
I hear It takes about 3 hours of 6miles. I've never climbed a mountain of 6 miles. I'm begginer. Is it difficult for me??? I'm going to go alone. So I am anxious..

I have only just seen this question and you've no doubt had your trip to Mam Tor. However, I'll post an answer because it may help others. First of all, there are a number of routes between Edale and Hope, not all taking in Mam Tor. 6miles seems about right but that's not all on mountain - you would be going up and down. Whether it takes 3 hours or more or less will depend on your level of fitness and the weather (It can change very quickly there). I would not advise going alone as a beginner, experience is important and many people underestimate even well trodden routes. Have the right equipment ( footwear, wet weather gear, map and compass), and ensure that you have physically prepared for the trip.
Having said that, this is a lovely area for walking and the views when you are up there are fantastic.

We'll be in London for two weeks in September and would like to get out of the city Saturday to Sunday to do some hiking/sight seeing. We'd love to go to the Peak District, but we'd rather not rent a car. Are there any areas that are easily accessible by train and then by foot? We're not set on the Peak District necessarily. We're just looking for something 2-3 hrs. from London by train that doesn't require renting a car where we can hike scenic trails and possibly see some historical sites. Any recommendations?

Peak district is a bit difficult to access without a car and takes longer than 2-3 hours.
I think Surrey hills or Eastbourne could be easier options.
