A lovely step back in time to when Alf Wight was a vet in Thirsk. Having watched both series of All Creatures Great and Small, and read a lot of the books, I felt very familiar with the museum, as if I had been there before. Lots to see and learn, especially as technology and knowledge has improved over the years. The interactive room is not just for kids, we had fun.

A truly wonderful stepping back into the original James Herriot world, with interesting information given within the wonderful reminiscences of the original TV series.

Lots to see for the Herriot fan. Well put together, and a variety of things of interest from veterinary implements to TV mementoes as well as the room reconstructions. Some fun activities for children too. Very interesting and a lovely place to visit.

I genuinely loved all of this visit. Lots to see much more than you think there will be. Extremely informative. Great for adults and kids.

I found the museum interesting and it was brilliant to have the chance to walk round the house where James Herriot lived and worked after reading his books many times. Lovely to see the rooms set up as they would have been on the ground floor. The short film was good and so too were all the other exhibits. I do think it could do without the emphasis on the TV series (or maybe just stick to one of them) as it starts to get a bit confusing when looking at photos and trying to work out whether certain characters are the real person or from one of the series. A really good visit though and I learnt plenty that I didn’t know before going there. The church where James and Helen married is only a few metres down the road and is worth a look at.

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit last week. Been a fan of the books and subsequent adaptations for years. Really impressed with all the information and would say this is must for young and older visiting the area. Lots of hands on puzzles etc for children to interact with. Throughly enjoyed our visit learning all all about the real James Helen Seigfried and Tristan

A very informative trail around the former house. Lots of the information on the family and veterinary science. Feel inspired to watch all creatures great and small now!!

We enjoyed it. My parents from abroad enjoyed it also. Only slight disappointment was that the basement air raid museum is no longer open - due to dampness I believe.

We saw the original (1970s) TV series and films as kids and now watch the current show of All Creatures’ . It’s an obvious day trip for us down to Thirsk to visit this attraction (and the surrounding area).
This is essentially a museum to the real life James Herriot and the books and TV that made him famous based in his old surgery. It’s a lovely old building and the ground floor is laid out as it would have been in the 1930s/40s. It’s an interesting look at life as it was. There’s also plenty of info about the real life characters and the TV shows.
We spent a lovely hour and a half wandering around. My wife especially loved it.
I do agree with some other reviewers that the exhibits look ‘tired’. In some places, it looked a little untidy too and all the Covid signage is a bit past it’s sell-by. Just give it some TLC please.
Worth a visit though and Thirsk itself is nice too.

My wife and I are pensioners and are driving from Wales to Thirsk next August with our two small dogs for a weeks holiday as the wife has always loved the James Herriot stories since a child.. I have seen that dogs are not allowed in the museum,... is anyone who has been on holiday in Thirsk with dogs and visited the museum aware of anywhere that dogs are allowed to be safely cared for during a visit to the museum, I am sure other families have come across this issue?

I did not see anyone carrying a dog and there are stairs to negotiate for elements of the museum.

We are staying in the Premier Inn in Thirsk. Given that some reviews for the James Herriot museum say it can take up to three hours to do the attraction and parking seems to be for two hours would it be best to go in a taxi?

If the premier inn is the one in the market place no it’s just off the market place you could walk it in 5 mins and isn’t there parking at the back of the pub that would be longer?

No but there are plenty close by. I would recommend the White Rose cafe and book shop.

I would suggest train, then taxi from the station. The train is quick and economical. Taxi would be fairly inexpensive, but would also offer you the opportunity to get some great local knowledge from the driver.
