‪As from August 2021, residents and visitors to the Western Downs Queensland will now enjoy new facilities following a $1.6m upgrade of the amenities at Chinchilla Weir camping park.
The enhancements include new playground equipment, drive-through caravan/RV sites (around a dozen sites with free power!), a new day-use camp kitchen shelter, three large concrete fire pits, five new picnic gazebos, park furniture, gas barbeques and improved car parking. To showcase the project, facilities have been beautified through the use of landscaped gardens and fresh native shrubs. The new camp kitchen shelter has power points for device charging, a large sink, large gas barbeque hot-plate, stainless steel benches and seating for over 20.

The Chinchilla Weir camping park is located 8 km south of Chinchilla and 150 metres east of the Tara-Condamine road. Entry is to the park is free and caravaners/RVs can enjoy up to 3 days free power, which reduces the need for intrusive generators. In addition to the overall beautification of the area, the rest rooms, boat ramp facilities and pontoon have also been upgraded.
The Chinchilla Weir is a popular place among locals and visitors to enjoy a picnic, do some fishing or get out on the water. It is also an ideal spot to base some local exploring from with day trips to Dalby (80km), Jimbour Station (75km) and Bunya Mountains (135km) all within easy reach.

The make-over of the Chinchilla Weir camping ground is an excellent example of how Government-funded improvements to regional recreational infrastructure provides local employment and business opportunities that generates positive flow-on benefits for the community and visitors to the district.

Mobile reception is good to very good, there are new flushing toilets, ample potable water, rubbish bins, cooking facilities and fire places. The nearest shops and fuel are available at nearby Chinchilla.
Chinchilla has a full range of food, clothing, medical and camping stores, a supermarket, a small hospital and vehicle, windscreen and tyre repairers, several restaurants, hotels and fast food outlets.

Due to the popularity of the park and the increased number of travellers in the Western Downs, all powered sites were occupied by 2.30pm, so one needs to be early to secure a good site.

Chinchilla Weir camp ground rates as one the most attractive and pleasant free camping sites in Queensland.‬

‪Awesome free (donation at the Visitors Info Center) campsite. There are a dozen powered sites, toilets and BBQ facilities. Plus a large area of beautiful wooded off grid camping available. ‬

‪We camped here for one night. Was very easy to find. The original campground was closed for upgrading so we were allowed to camp on the front grasslands. There was plenty of space for the number of vehicles that were there. Campfires were allowed. No facilities so you had to be self sufficient. The weir had a lot of water in it and a local, told me it has not run over for 10 years.‬

‪With most of Queensland still in drought, we went out to the weir to check on the local situation. Yes, rain is much needed‬

‪ We went just for the sunset, which was amazing, but found it is a popular sight for caravans. A play area for the kids and a pontoon...and not to far out of town‬

‪Chinchilla Weir is the place to be. This facility has it all. Including a jetty to fish off, a boat ramp, rope swings for the kids, Ski club for members, facilities that clean and well presented. Very wide and open spaces for camping, which allows campers to spread out and have some of there own space. Was a every good area for us to sit down and have a BBQ picnic lunch. Over all was a very good area for my family to have a get away weekend‬
