This was a belated trip to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary delayed by Covid. We are from the UK and found the trip amazing. The cabins are very tight but a good sleep was had by all. The food is delicious justvas in a fine dining restaurant. The first class comes with lunch, breakfast and lunch. On this occasion the air con wasn't working in the lounge car.

A worthwhile experience once or one way but definitely couldn't do a return trip on this aging train.
The idea of a long relaxing overnight train ride is great but this is not a train for sleeping with any quality. Lots of noise from jinkers bumping, and loud bangs, numerous stops, it rides and sounds like a goods train, just slower.
The train is very slow avg speed 55kmph on a narrow winding track that is 100 years overdue for an upgrade. QR haven't spent a $ on this train or track in decades.
In fairness the last 300km is straight and more comfortable.
The sleeper cabins are squeezy and once bed is down the average man can't move or turn. Plump people beware: the narrow passage is 40cm wide so there's no turning back. Quite claustrophobic.
Now the good points:
Great staff. Experienced, friendly, helpful but run things very much by the rules. You sit, stand, eat, drink, leave when they say. No argument.
Dining car food is exceptional and includes a drink with meals.
The lounge car is comfortable but gets very cramped as it holds only 24 people in 3 sets of 4 seats on each side.
Very from the train windows in daylight is great shows this beautiful outback at its best.
The majority of pax (over 90%) are seniors 70+, many older and find the train easier than flying so it's a case weighing up you best option. In my case train in fly out.

Great trip but the train carriages are over 30 years old and showing it. Quite comfortable during day travel but at night Sleepers are very cramped. I am a size 44 waist and could barely squeeze through the door when the bed was down. Don’t know why they don’t use the old Sunlander sleepers That were renovated not long before the train changed to sleeping capsules I think they were much more comfortable. Staff and meals were wonderful. Train is quite rocky, likely thanks to our 3’6” rail gauge.

The first class sleeper carriages were grubby, marked and stained, looking as though they had not been cleaned for years. Idly placing my hand beside my seat I encountered several matted wads of hair, fluff and I dread to think what else.
The food in the restaurant was excellent and the waiting and bar staff courteous and friendly.

We decided to visit Longreach and Winton and make the train journey part of our holiday, so we took the train in both directions. The views were different each trip and a good opportunity to read a book along the way.
It was an experience, walking down curving corridors on a swaying train. If someone was coming in the opposite direction, we had to back up to a passing place between carriages. There was a lot of laughter with fellow passengers as a result.
There was very little space in the sleeper cabin, so changing clothes or entering the room when the bed was down was a bit tricky, but great fun!
The staff were very helpful. polite and friendly. The food was excellent and even the gluten free options were very nice.
The bedding was clean and comfortable and we slept quite well. The amenities supplied were organic and very nice, although we had our own toiletries and an eye mask.
We prefer en suite toilets and showers, but it was only one night each way and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Leaves from Roma Street station on Platform 10. You have free travel from any station in Brisbane. Our train was 1 hour 18 mins late leaving. The double room had two chairs facing each other, a basin each with drinkable water, a welcome letter, a little zip bag with a couple of toiletries, a towel and bedding. There is a standard power point. The chairs fold down to two single beds with two pillows and a duvet. There is also an extra blanket. The room is cool during the day (April).
The hallway is only wide enough for one person at a time. There are shower and toilet rooms at the end of the carriage. Both very good condition and well maintained.
In the welcome letter there are your times for dinner, lunch and breakfast. These are included in the cost. For dinner you also get a complementary drink, wine or beer or fizzy.
Next to the dinner carriage is a lounge carriage where you can sit with two others facing the middle. Drinks can be bought from the next carriage. Tea and coffee are complementary.
Breakfast was choice of continental or cooked. Both substantial.
Lunch was a choice of three meals - all very nice, with two dessert choices and complementary drink. Dining booths are tight and set for four people to share.

We chose to travel in what we thought was a First Class Twin Sleeper. All the reviews said it was wonderful! On entering the First Class carriage we were shocked to discover there was a very narrow central passage way down the centre of the carriage with cabins on either side. It was impossible for two people of average build to walk past each other. Our twin sleeper cabins were nothing but single cabins with the interconnecting door removed. The decor was old, tired and greatly in need of refurbishment.
The train left Roma Street at 6.10pm and as the journey that night continued we were very cold. Before dinner we decided to enjoy a Scotch to help us warm up. This was a stupid idea. I ordered two Scotches and the rude barman went straight to the 'fridge, took out two cans and pulled the tabs on both. He did not at any point tell me they didn't sell minatures and would I like a Scotch and coke mixer!!!! This was a wasted $17 - refund please Qld Rail. We never drink Scotch and coke and found it extremely hard going to drink the sweet sickly rubbish.
Dinner in the Tucker Box Restaurant was awful. I chose Pork Fillet - it was tough and inedible. My wife chose the Darling Downs prime sirloin Steak; what a joke - it too was tough and inedible. The only saving grace that night was the dessert my wife decided to eat - the Chocolate Torte, which was delicious. I don't eat dessert.
The air conditioning is supposed to be kept at 22C but overnight it was far colder and I went to bed in my clothes. My wife decided to change into a warm nightdress but in spite of a duvet and a blanket ended up getting a chill in her back.
Breakfast the following morning was reasonable - the poached eggs were good. The coffee is served with skim milk - yuk, awful. Lunch rated not much better than the previous night. My wife enjoyed the dessert - baked custard.
The air conditioning is supposed to be kept at 22C but as the journey continued that day, it grew even colder. By the time the train reached Alpha at approximately 2.15pm, we found it warmer at this lovely small town where we had the opportunity to walk around during the 20 minute stop, than on the train. By the time we left Barcaldine we were huddled in blankets.
The dining room crew were unpleasant and far from accommodating.
The cabins contain a wash basin and a sign which says that the water is safe for drinking. When poured into a glass, the water has to settle before it can be drunk; it also has a terrible taste. My wife drinks a lot of water and foolishly did so on the train. Two days after arriving in Longreach she began to feel nauseous and had trouble eating. This continued during our entire stay in Longreach. I drank far less water - didn't like the awful taste and didn't suffer the same consequences as my wife.
The speaker system could be heard in my cabin but not in my wife's cabin.
We paid $956 over and above our pensioner entitlement tickets for the sleeper accommodation and consider that we wasted our money. Our journey was terrible.
Queensland Rail needs to think seriously about building new sleeper carriages for the Spirit of the Outback. They are cramped third class carriages which fail to live up to the advertisements. I dread to think how passengers would be rescued in the event of a rail accident.
We will never again travel on a long distance train in Queensland and certainly do not recommend the Spirit of the Outback. The people of the Central West deserve a better train.

This is a great way to travel between Longreach and Brisbane, as long as you don't mind a very firm bed in a small room. The food was good, and the staff were all friendly and helpful. The dining car and lounge area are better than expected for a passenger train.

Travelled on the Spirit of the Outback on the 29th of May. The train seat was comfortable and it converted to a bed at night. You could just buy a seat ticket but my friends and I opted for a sleeper carriage….well worth it. The staff were absolutely amazing…cheerful, helpful and courteous. The meals were also of a top quality and these were included in the price of our ticket. There was also a counter and seats at Shearer’s Rest for complimentary tea and coffee. The carriage also had a toilet and shower. It was my first time on the Spirit if the Outback and it was a fabulous experience.

We travelled from Brisbane to Longreach then got the connecting bus to Winton, and the reverse on the way back. It takes 26 hrs on the train to reach Longreach, then 2 hrs bus to Winton. The train was great, and reasonably priced for a sleeper. All the staff were very nice and the mealtimes were really well done.

How comfortable is it sleeping in the economy seats?
Do they recline a long way?
How much leg room is there?

We are planning to visit Longreach by train from Brisbane in June 2022. When is the new timetable going to be available so that we can make a booking?

Bookings are currently not open for travel after 31 March 2022. Keep in touch with Queensland Rail with your query. They are very helpful.

How do the sleeping arrangements work for a couple traveling 1st class?
كُتب بتاريخ 1 أبريل 2021
Hi
You are top and tailed if that makes sense. It works out to be two single beds end to end. I can't compare it to 1st on a plane (haven't been) but more comfortable than business (Cathay or qantas).

No Wifi. And your own wifi will be patchy esp after Rockhampton on the way to Longreach.

Hello,
We’ve booked first class and depart Brisbane at 6.10pm on a Tuesday evening. Is dinner served that first night.
Also, we’ll celebrate NY Eve onboard during our return journey from Longreach. Will champagne be available to purchase at midnight?
Can’t wait!

There were 2 sittings for dinner and I think the second is about 8pm so yes you will get served. I’m not sure if their COVID restrictions still apply so ask the help line of QLD Rail. Again the QLD Rail will be able to inform you about alcohol purchases onboard. It was a fun trip so sit back and read an Agatha Christie crime story.

Hi there, thanks for your enquiry.
Meals are included in the RailBed fares, and food is available for purchase for economy.
A Brisbane to Longreach journey includes: breakfast, lunch, dinner and high tea (order of meals may vary depending on which day you are departing.)
We look forward to welcoming you aboard! :)

Hi Karen, thanks for your question!
That's correct, on the Spirit of the Outback there is a dedicated baggage carriage where checked in luggage is stored for the duration of your journey.
In the First Class Sleepers, there is room to store your carry on luggage, and in economy there is limited overhead storage available for small carry on items/bags.
