Fantastic place. Control tower was great and seeing the area took you back in time. Volunteers were fantastic, helpful and friendly. Great cafe too. Will definitely be visiting again.

A quaint charitable attraction that delivered interesting insights into America's 100th Bomber Group that was based at Thorpe Abbotts, Norfolk.
This is a small-scale operation run by volunteers who - in my experience - provide a very warm welcome.
Exhibits are basic but tell the stories of various members of the Group and their operations, exhibiting many personal belongings and artifacts. The control tower is particularly good.
Free entry is a bonus.

This was a thought provoking place to visit. For me I found it interesting to think about the human cost and experiences of those airmen. My husband found the technical side interesting. It was a well cared for place and worth a visit.

Love this museum. Always visit when visiting family in the area. The tower is in excellent condition but I'm very impressed with the sheds and equipment on show. The café is simple and well priced but the venue of the café is excellent. Tea in a nissan hut is unique. Shop has lots to purchase from kids toys to memorabilia. Go, its free. Spend the money in the shop and café to support this fabulous time piece.

A fascinating museum run by knowledgeable volunteers who are passionate about the site's history and have countless experiences to share. The site truly is a hidden gem and worth making a visit to see, the museum is free to enter with a cafe and can be supported by donations.

Operated by volunteers who seem well informed and helpful. Culturally educating to all age groups with watch-tower overlooking old runway. Coffee shop offers hot and cold drinks and snacks. Plenty parking spaces for large groups. Expect to spend 1/2 day there - there’s plenty to see and read.

My husband and I visited recently and were so impressed with everything about this museum! If you have an infinity of everything WW2 you must visit. It is a deeply personal look into the American servicemen who were based at this airfield. It is moving, impactful and full of historical facts, interesting artifacts and personal recollections.
The staff at the museum are so knowledgeable, welcoming and eager to answer questions and share insight into a period of time which should never be forgotten.

So I've wanted to go here for years, ever since I read Donald L. Miller's 'Masters of the Air.' (Which I recommend for anyone prior to visiting)
It is made up for 4 buildings (2 originals) where the tower for the base was originally located. Each building has a different focus. The first building is a meet and greet area where volunteers can talk to you about the museum and the history of the base. It also has a small cafe with snacks, coffee, and tea. The volunteers were much more knowledgeable than any unpaid personnel I've ever seen at historical sites. It was truly impressive to speak with them.
The tower is the original tower, but it has been renovated due to decades of decay. Each room in it is loaded with memorabilia and stories all specific to the base. That is something special about Thorpe Abbotts and this museum, they focus entirely on the base and the 100th BG, and do not really discuss outside entities except to provide context for the 100th. It allows for a history to be shared that is rich with details that would normally be overlooked.
The remaining buildings have pieces of airplanes, and a model of the base. They show what different portions of Thorpe Abbotts life were like during the war. Again, it is very detailed and you walk away with a disconnectedness or a true sense of what it was like there.
There is only a small portion of the runway left. The main concrete that you can see from the tower was used for taxing aircraft and parking them on hardstands. Many hardstands still exist on the property but are used by the local farmers.
I spent about 3 hours more there than I thought I would because I could pick the brains of the volunteers and get so much from them. A shout out to Mandy for the help there. I visit historical locations everywhere I go, and museums as frequently as I can, and this was my favorite. To be fair, that is partially because I have read up on this base and unit and so I could get more out of it. But even if I was visiting this base cold, with no prior knowledge, the volunteers would make it special.

Sorry, only just seen your question.
I posted a review on Facebook and straight away I was offered the guided tour. If you do Facebook try that.
