‪If you are visiting Wymondham and have half an hour to spare a walk to the abbey from the effort. The story is intriguing, the architecture is fascinating and the walk is invigorating. Well worth the visit for history buff with interesting information boards for those who like details‬

‪Having checked on the website that the Abbey would be open and believed the 11.00 to 1.00 Monday open for private prayer and visitors, we drove 1.5 hours to visit. The main door advised the entrance was round the side. On arrival there was a hand written note saying closed for rehearsal. We were not the only ones staring in disbelief. ‬

‪Beautiful location, and perfect place for a walk and a pint. It has a nice pub round the corner, and at the lower of the hill a beautiful bridge, with a newly improved section to the river, with a perfect park with many seating and picnic areas with a lovely view of the abbey from them. Makes a perfect walk out, do it often, and the abbey at night looks as spectacular lit up as it does during the day.‬

‪We visited today because it is so well reviewed in Pevsner and Jenkins - but what do we find? Closed, and only open for 2 hours on Friday and Saturday. How can such an historical building be so inaccessible? It's clearly the main reason to visit the town but the town doesn't seem too want anyone to see it. Hugely disappointed.‬

‪Visited with my friends as we had some time to kill before our dinner reservation. We wouldn’t visit inside however the grounds where very nice to walk around and we got some great photos.‬

‪On a visit back to my native town I was so disappointed that the Abbey (where I got married) was closed. I assume due to Covid, so let's hope that changes soon, but there was no indication. Also, why does it still say Happy Easter on the gate? And fairy lights permanently on all round the graveyard doesn't send a very environmentally friendly message... Such a shame that such a major tourist attraction feels distinctly unloved and undersold.‬

‪It was unfortunate that on this visit to the ruins, it not only started to rain but the centre itself was closed. I had hoped to see inside but it will have to wait for another time.‬

‪Wymondham Abbey is just on the edge of the main town of Wymondham. It has ruins which are part of the old abbey and there is an information board to tell you about the history of the abbey. There is also the main building but unfortunately when I visited it was closed.

There is a fairly large graveyard which has some beautiful gravestones and there are a number of paths through the grounds to walk through.‬

‪ In 1107, William d’Aubigny founded a Benedictine monastery in Wymondham as a ‘daughter house’ of the great St Alban’s Abbey.

The church was a grand stone structure used by the small community of monks and also by the parishioners of the town. This arrangement caused frequent disputes, and in 1249 the Pope ruled that the church should be clearly divided. The eastern half was to be used by the monks, the western half became the town’s parish church.

And today, although the monastery is an attractive ruin, the church part of the equation is still used as the parish church.

Although currently closed due to the Covid-19 crisis, the exterior is well worth a visit. It is an impressive structure and I particularly like that the walls were built in the traditional local style, with inlaid flint stones.‬

‪The abbey was closed due to COVID 19 but its a pleasant walk in the grounds and along the river Tiffey which is near by. A striking building with two tall towers which was a Benedictine monastery until the reformation. The building has a grave yard around it and a steep bank called a Ha- Ha which separates the grounds from grazing meadows occupied by sheep. Had a nice picnic followed by a pleasant walk along the river.‬
