On previous visits to the town the museum has always been closed.
It is much than it looks from the outside.
This free museum is well laid out full of interesting exhibits.
We had a lot of fun dressing up, trips down memory lane for my friend who 20 years older than me.
It says recommend visit 1-2 hours I think we did it in under an hour. Neither of us stop to read information , thankfully it's not a museum with a lot of reading . The kitchen exhibit, 1950s & camera display was brilliant.
The only I would say was very disappointing no photography.
We both take a soft toy out with us on our trips out who like to have their photos taken looking at things we see.
We also like to take photos of each other as memories .
Not that score I wouldn't recommend this delightful museum, it's a shame really as both the local museums of any note the ancient house in Thetford & Moyses hall in Brandon allow photography and it just adds to the enjoyment & pleasure

Our grandson loved it. Good history of he area and replica of the Mildenhall treasure. Unfortunately it was only open on certain days in August and heycould have done with more holiday activity for the children. Hence only tree stars.

This little museum is packed with reassures from local memorabilia to a display about Short Stirling aircraft. They happily do small special events and it’s a nice venue for that.

Very well laid out museum. Good interpretation. Nice replica of a first century Roman silver treasure and a fifth century warrior burial.

I was told by a friend there was an original raleigh police bike on show in the museum! A keen cyclist myself was so exicited to see the british racing green cycle on display. Ridden by the locally famous PC308 John Gowing, a nice tribute to the now retired bobby!
Staff are very friendly and knowledgable!

... and one for putting it on the map.
1. Mildenhall is sandwiched between the wet Fenland in the west and sandy Breckland in the east. Imagine farming in the area with pretty much opposite strategies depending exactly on where you are.
2. It has been the locale for aviation enthusiasts. Incidentally, Mildenhall was the starting point of 1934’s air race flying all the way to Melbourne.

Free museum that is staffed with knowledgeable, friendly ladies. Location close to bus terminal makes for a good stop while in Mildenhall. Truly highlights the local history with something for everyone.

Great staff with a very good knowledge of the area and history. Well worth a visit to find out about Mildenhall and the surrounding areas. The museum is free entry, but a small donation can be made to assist in the running.

A quick visit due to time restraints, but its nicely laid out, and focussed on the local area. The Mildenhall Roman silverware, while a reproduction, is superb, hardly a dent, and there is plenty on flying in the area. Friendly ladies behind the counter too.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Mildenhall Museum. This is a very good local museum with a modern feel, and good facilities. It is relatively small, but then again so is Mildenhall and its surrounding district.
There are a few very nice galleries tracing the town's past back beyond its origins. One very eye catching exhibit is on the "Mildenhall Treasure." While the original silver hoard is in the British Museum in London, very nice reproductions are on display here.
There is also an exhibit about the "Lakenheath Warrior." Lakenheath is one village over from Mildenhall and it is still "local" history. That said the "warrior" was found in a dig on RAF Lakenheath (actually in Eriswell) in the 1990s. This now famous "horse burial" made national news, and the programme Time Team. The exhibit is interesting, and shows the thirty-something male, his shield boss, sword, and horse's skeleton. I had the privilege of working on the dig at the Eriswell Saxon cemetery and still remember the excitement when John made the original discovery. What the museum's display lacks is a sense of scale of the burial. There was a huge outer ring to the grave, and it was part of a burial ground for hundreds. That said it is a wonderful exhibit.
This is an excellent small museum (5 rating) and a very good museum as a whole (4 of 5 even compared to some national ones).
