This NT property was the home of Rudyard Kipling and it provides an authentic view of his life here and illustrations and explanations of his interesting life and contributions.
The outstanding and unique feature of the house was the embossed tree of life Cordoba style leather on the walls of one of the rooms.
The walled garden is renowned for its tulips in season and they were still in bloom.
A visit to the mill is worthwhile.

Pleasant country house, the former home of Rudyard Kippling, set in the Sussex countryside. The grounds drop down to a small stream and a watermill at the bottom. Not particularly extensive but attractive enough with a water feature and spring flowers - plus plenty of seats where you can eat your sandwiches! There is also a tea room and shop plus toilets.
The interior of the house is particularly interesting as it is largely untouched since Kipplings days. It is staffed by informative volunteers who will provide you with much information on the history of the property.

My wife and I visited here for the first time recently. Jacobean house is a 17th-century house and was the home of Rudyard Kipling. Great National Trust place to visit and it is free if you are a National Trust member, (£13.20 with gift aid if you’re not and £12. without).

Came here during winter time when the house is usually closed for restoration work. As a result we had a guided tour that did not tell us much about the house, but was concentrated on the requirements of the conservation of the furniture, curtains, books etc.
Tour took about 35 minutes.
We had lunch in the tea rooms - moderately priced - before heading to the mill.
After that a short walk around the grounds.
Overall, an enjoyable visit.

We had a lovely few hours at Batemans today. The house is small enough to feel homely and is beautifully decorated in Edwardian style.
The grounds were understandably very wet underfoot, once you are beyond the formal gardens with hard paths, walking boots/shoes would be required at the moment.
We found the cafe staff most welcoming, the soup and scones were lovely, and we understand they were home made there.
All in all a delightful visit.

Had a really unkind and unethical experience in the coffee shop today which caused me to cancel my membership. The NT is all about the ££££ as opposed to customer/member service. Also note the lack of poems/info signage in the grounds but you are bombarded with signs for tearooms and shop. Was a great place, run by greedy/unethical folk.

Although we had been before it had been a good few years ago so my wife and I decided to re-visit Batemans.
I’ve lost faith in the National Trust of late but if you put aside their politics and just enjoy their properties you can still have an enjoyable day out.
Batemans is a gem of a house with lots of information on Kipling.

We did the Puck of Pooks Hill pink walk around the estate.
Sadly most of the paths were thick with mud, making treacherous walking conditions.
Even though we were wearing wellies, it was so slippery underfoot.
Would have been a great walk, with lovely scenery if not so boggy and churned up by cattle.

Lovely Autumn afternoon at Batemen's.
Mulberry Tea Rooms got us off to a good start with an excellent cauliflower, curry sauce and chick pea pasty - good value and really tasty!!
Interesting house and good grounds to walk in the pleasant October sun.
A pity that flooding prevented access to whole grounds and water mill.

We thought the National Trust looks after this property very well and were intrigued by the information given by the guides. It was good to know that when Kipling acquired it he furbished it as of the period. All the guides obviously loved the house and were very knowledgeable. We were impressed with the size of Kipling's Rolls Royce and appreciated the anecdotes about it and Kipling's feelings about it. There was a very pleasant walk to the Mill which was one of Kipling's favourite walks and it is in a very peaceful setting. The tea room was very good as well with very nice cakes and coffee and Luscombe Rhubarb fruit juice.

Only around the grounds and not in the house. I would telephone ahead/check the website for areas accessible for your needs. I've always found the staff very helpful.

Hi, I am looking for any advice on getting to Bateman's by public transport from London. I believe there is a train to Etchingham and then a very scant bus service on to Burwash. Does anyone know whether it is possible to get a cab from Etchingham or any nearby railway line? Also planning to make an overnight stay nearby. Grateful for any information, whatsoever. Many thnaks

I would say yes but it would almost certainly be expensive and buses in the area normally run 1-2 hours , try phoning Batemans. Expect a long travelling time . I did bus and train . Nearby Mayfield to Rochester and it took me 5 hours !
Are dogs allowed?
