‪I learned a lot from this visit. I must confess the only things I knew about Rudyard Kipling were If and the Jungle Book, so I didn’t go as any kind of a pilgrimage, it just looked like a nice house. And it is, it’s lovely, but there is so much to learn during the visit. So much information about what must have been quite a groundbreaking life, particularly in respect of Kipling’s wide travelling. I had no idea he wrote the Jungle Book in (as I recall, could be wrong state but definitely right country) Vermont?! How strange to imagine his doing that, particularly through a snowy North American winter! I must admit I was also weirdly fascinated by the rubbery floor of his study, never seen anything like it before. It was one of the most informative visits of a full week of visiting NT properties across the south east. It still has the feeling of a family home and I really enjoyed visiting it.‬

‪Took our 9 year old godson and his younger brother here a day out. They loved the grounds where the could play at various games that were set up, and the house was lovely although I think they didn't appreciate it as much as we did lol. We had taken a picnic lunch with us and had this in the designated picnic area which was lovely. All the staff/guides were really nice and helpful and very knowledgeable which made it very interesting.‬

‪Pretty house and garden. Shame the National Trust charge an extra £4 for parking (parking meter that only accepts cash and no change given) which feels like stealth charging - why not just add it to the entrance fee? The entrance charge is pretty steep for a rather modest property, (which takes a maximum of an hour to see). Expensive for a family to visit. The staff push membership at the door too, which is a bit daunting if you’ve just come for a relaxing day out and don’t want to run the gauntlet of hard sell tactics. The stewards seem to take pleasure in telling off kids who accidentally touch something or go in the wrong direction around the house. Would be nice to see a slightly more balanced assessment of the life and writings of Rudyard Kipling in the displays (he was a misogynist, racist and colonialist). Nice tea room with gentle staff who manage the entitled NT customers well!‬

‪I highly recommend Bateman's Jacobean House & Gardens, Rudyard Kiplings home in Sussex.
A truly special place to visit with wonderful, knowledgeable staff who explain all about Rudyard Kiplings life, books and poems.

We were lucky enough to sit outside under a tree for a free poetry reading and Tony's short introductory stories before each poem, gave more meaning for us.

Kipling's house has been carefully preserved with all his original furnishings, so it's easy to imagine Rudyard working away.
I particularly loved the book Kipling's Grandfather painted for him as a child, to help learn the Alphabet, he was also a very talented artist.

The gardens are stunning with short or long walks, as to your preference.

Yes, we were lucky because it was a beautiful sunny day, but made all the better by the helpful enthusiasm given by all the volunteers, so a big, big thank you to all of you, it was much appreciated.‬

‪Bateman's was Rudyard Kipling's Sussex country home set in a beautiful rural part of Southern England not far from Lewes. He also had another in Rottingdean just along the coast from Brighton.
When you enter this National Trust property, the first thing you see is a small orchard of various fruit trees next to a vegetable garden which, I was informed, is used to supply the café kitchen.
Having walked past this area you come to the restaurant/café - a typical N.T. café where the fare is good enough but not exactly cordon blue. I had a baked potato with tuna and a perfectly acceptable coffee ☕.

We then moved on to the house itself which was left just as it would have been in Kipling's day with all the original furnishings and decor. I'm not a huge fan of Kipling, but I imagine if you were this would be fascinating and very impressive. The volunteer staff were all very friendly and informative.

Next we went to the gardens which for me were the best part with more beautiful lawns and borders. At the end of a winding woodland path there is a working water mill which wasn't running while we were there but apparently is operative.

After a quick visit to the gift shop where we bought two greetings cards, it was back to the restaurant for a delicious cream tea and another coffee and then home.

All in all, a very pleasant and informative few hours.

Can recommend!‬

‪A hidden gem - we really were not expecting this!

Lovely 17th Century house. Home of Rudyard Kipling. Good displays with no attempts at woke revisionism.

Marvellous setting, including old watermill, and beautiful gardens, with hardly any 'rewilding' (aka neglect).‬

‪Very interesting view into history and life of Rudyard Kipling. 17th Century house with rooms which appear the same now as in Kiplings time lovely peaceful gardens. Coffee shop on site (sadly like all NT properties very standard fare and high prices) . National Trust run so free access to members Open daily 11am to 4.30pm. Early summer good time to visit to see gardens at best.‬

‪This is a national trust property but even if you are not a member, it’s worth visiting! Place where Mr Kipling lived and wrote few of his novels and poems. It’s full of character and history. As always rooms have amazing volunteers who know so much about the house and his life!
There is a nice caffe and tea room with the view of courtyard full of flowers. If you have time there are 3 different walks you can do which are very well sign posted‬
