Visiting Bateman's is always something of a bitter-sweet experience for me. Set in beautiful countryside, you reach the house by walking down a slope through the perfectly maintained grounds. My wife and I always make a point of stopping first at the National Trust café. This is a very popular place, and a glance at the selection of cakes on offer shows you the reason why. I can recommend sitting at one of the outside tables and just taking in the lovely walled garden area.
The house itself is a wonderful example of 17th century architecture. The entrance hall boasts a massive fireplace and the tiny window set high up in the wall facing the entrance, where Kipling's wife could monitor all visitors coming to see the great author.
My favourite room in the house is Kipling's study. The Trust has done a fantastic job of setting the scene in there, and you get the impression that you have entered there just seconds after Kipling has left the book lined room.
Next door is a room filled with awards, gifts and memorabilia collected by Kipling over the years, including his Nobel Prize.
One room is, for me, particularly poignant. This is the bedroom of his son, John, who, despite poor eyesight, joined the army at the outset of World War 1 and was killed in 1915 during the Battle of Loos. It is a small room, with a single bed, a window overlooking the gardens, and a wardrobe cluttered with the effects of a young man who like sports. There is even a school blazer hanging up. On a table beside the bed is a box containing the personal effects of an officer, all that remained of a young man - he was barely a month past his 18th birthday - lost to war.
The grounds themselves are outstanding, with a large formal pond, a rose garden and grounds , and a visit to the old mill is a must.
Bateman's is an enchanting house with a sense of tranquillity that will have me going back again.

The grounds and house are fantastic. Such a sad story about the Kiplings son. However must agree with previous reviews, the service in the tea room was excruciating. Topped off by a fire alarm which sent the staff into overload and resulted in us being barked at by a battle axe, no way were we leaving our coffee after waiting in a queue for 30 minutes! Overall a good trip, we laughed about the coffee situation later in the day!

Having seen the property on television recently and visiting the area we decided to take time to visit and were really glad that we did. The welcome from the staff was warm and friendly, the house guides were knowledgeable and engaging. Don’t miss the 10 minute introductory talk! The gardens are beautiful and well kept. I’ll definitely be visiting again when next in the area.

Have been before as we live not far away. Didn’t do the house as had the dogs with us and seen before. We did a walk around the estate and were looking forward to a relaxing cup of tea/bite to eat - and that’s where our nice experience ended! The queue took 35 minutes - it may have been a bank holiday but the lack of staff actually doing anything was astounding for what was always going to be a busy day. Not enough tables and when (overpriced - £5 for a small sausage roll and a tiny bit of salad) food did eventually appear the girls walk around all the tables both sides of cafe, by which time it is likely cold and other food may be piling up. Scotney is much much better and always busy too - why not get an ice cream van like there is there. Won’t rush back but if we walk we will go to Burwash and find a pub instead.

We were thoroughly enjoying this venue and seeing all the artefacts. We got to the room where the gold panelling was. A lady asked if we had visited before and I answered no. My Husband touched the back of a dining chair. The guide then turned into a battle axe being most rude . If things are not to be touched notices should be on them. This spoilt the whole experience of this place.

Went with with our grand children and spent an enjoyable few hours with room for them to run about and follow the Easter Egg trail. From our perspective we were able to look around the house and the memorabilia inside. It's difficult to maintain the balance between keeping the house as it was and also attracting new visitors who as time pa

This is a must visit place if you’re anywhere near
The house feels like the Kipling family have just popped out and may return at any moment
The volunteers and staff are so welcoming and informative without being intrusive, well done
The grounds and gardens are lovely
We had visited in 2020 when we were unable to go into house due to Covid restrictions and we were so glad to return

Lovely few hours spent here.
The house is great and the grounds lovely for a nice stroll.
Dogs welcome in the grounds.
Lovely coffee and cake, although the cake was a bit dry
Expensive at 32 for two adults and parking

An incredible place to visit for history, for ornaments, for amazing antiques, for beautifully kept gardens, for a lovely National Trust shop and tearoom! My wife and I spent over two hours here exploring the 17th century house and grounds, and then having some lunch. Thoroughly enjoyable, and the guides in the house were excellent. We will certainly return in the Summer months to enjoy a picnic in the beautiful grounds!

Only around the grounds and not in the house. I would telephone ahead/check the website for areas accessible for your needs. I've always found the staff very helpful.

Hi, I am looking for any advice on getting to Bateman's by public transport from London. I believe there is a train to Etchingham and then a very scant bus service on to Burwash. Does anyone know whether it is possible to get a cab from Etchingham or any nearby railway line? Also planning to make an overnight stay nearby. Grateful for any information, whatsoever. Many thnaks

I would say yes but it would almost certainly be expensive and buses in the area normally run 1-2 hours , try phoning Batemans. Expect a long travelling time . I did bus and train . Nearby Mayfield to Rochester and it took me 5 hours !
Are dogs allowed?
