‪I’ve loved it here since I was a kid. I’m sad it’s quiet now and doesn’t hold so many events but I’m glad I get to share it with my partner. It was a huge part of my childhood‬

‪A really wonderful historical house in an unexpected/ unlikely location. We found the house and its history really interesting and charming, the staff lovely and had a great homemade scone in the cafe. Lovely stuff!‬

‪Disappointingly not as beautiful as the photos. No lovely lavender or any other flowers in the gardens, just scrubby grass. Clearly not a priority to keep them in good condition. We arrived and wondered if it was open because the website said closed. After 5 mins at the front room counter finally someone came out from the back of the house to check membership. She commented it was a quiet day (not surprising when the website is wrong). Told us that unfortunately there were no more tours of the house available. Just wander round on our own. So there's an information board in each room but nothing else. No furniture, no original artefacts etc. and sadly no atmosphere. The NT do not run this house - it's run by the local council of Barking we believe. Also the cafe is a dull, utilitarian room in the back of the ground floor. No outside tables so not remotely tempting on a fine sunny day.
Be aware that you have to pay for parking outside - with a pay app. Approx £3 per hour. All in all very poor value for money. Save you money and visit Rainham hall nearby instead? A real delight. ‬

Hi There- Thanks for visiting Eastbury Manor House. Its a shame to hear you didn't enjoy your visit to the house, we always want all guests to enjoy their experience, and that's usually the case. The lavender at the front lawns is no longer there, which was a result of die back and difficulty maintaining during the covid lockdown. However, we have started work reinstating the ornamental beds at the front of the house- with information outside explaining this. As for the rest of the gardens, if your visit was in July, we definitely have many plants in bloom, especially in our Kitchen Garden. We've checked all our websites, and our opening times are correct and was not wrong at any point that we're aware of- we update our hours regularly, including putting notices up if we have to close at short notice. Our welcome staff work across the tearoom and front desk- there is a bell at the front desk to alert us on the rare occasion no-one is there. Regarding information in the rooms, we actually have a lot more information in each room than that- so I'm not sure whether you missed some or not. As well as information about the room, we have additional info panels and interpretation pointing to specific historic aspects of Eastbury. We also have additional info packs printed out and available in the Great Hall and Painted Chamber with extensive information. If you visited in June or July, we also had two temporary exhibitions by local artists, exploring connections with the house and local history, and we also have two permanent exhibitions, 'Eastbury Saved' and 'Eastbury Makers', which are always open to the public. We do have small amounts of antique 17th century furniture. But as a living museum, we deliberately don't have too much; the property is run and completely funded by Barking & Dagenham Council- also quite clearly stated on our websites and the National Trust's Eastbury page. As such, as well as a historic property, we're a community asset and regularly use our rooms to support local groups, events etc which also helps us to keep the house open. We're very disappointed to hear your review of our tearoom; we are regularly praised on out tearoom, which offers a wide range of meals, homemade cakes (and if we do say so ourselves, some of the best scones you'll find at any National Trust property!) and much more. There is a whole outdoor terrace with tables right next to the tearoom, so there was and are ample outdoor spaces to sit and eat. We're aware parking is tricky- we give details on our website- there is free parking a bit of a walk away, which we could have pointed you to if asked- parking is also free on Sundays. Finally at just £7 for adult entry, and free to local residents, National Trust Members, Art Pass holders and SPAB members, we think our historic gem and architecturally splendid property is well worth a visit. We always welcome visitors back, so I do hope you might return so we can show you what we have to offer. Eastbury Manor House

‪It is hardly believable that such a wonderful tranquil place exists in an urban environment. It would be easy to imagine it is in the countryside but it is surrounded by houses.
The interest in the house is the building itself, the history and those that have lived there over the centuries. There is also an excellent cafe.
It is easy to get to as it is a short walk from an underground station and is well worth a visit.‬

‪Fascinating survivor from the 16th Century, amazing building with a rich history, located within a 1920’s housing development. Don’t be put off it’s well worth a visit, it’s owned by the National Trust and free to members and great it has a role in the local community too.‬

‪A hidden gem and do go on a Sunday when David is on hand, a volunteer tour guide.

We were lucky enough to arrive just as David was about to start a guided tour.

A walk and talk through each room and garden. David made our visit with his in-depth knowledge.

Glad we went.‬

‪Visiting Eastbury Manor House, we made the journey by rail out to Upney station to walk to the grade 1 National Trust house. Though until we walked in the door we were unsure if the house was open, as there appeared to be a problem with the website and attempts to contact on the phone were not answered. We spent an enjoyable 90 minutes looking at, viewing and reading the information about this house from the 1570's. The dry weather had impacted on the garden which was obviously waiting for much need rain. Finishing our look through the house, we stayed for lunch, though a number of the advertised lunch items, were still unavailable after midday. ‬

Hi There, Thanks for your visit- I'm glad you found the house interesting! We appreciate the feedback- our website is now being updated much more regularly, as are our social media channels. We aim to answer the phone whenever the reception is staffed, and to respond to any messages. You can also email us at eastburymanorhouse@lbbd.gov.uk if you would like further info. We're working hard on our gardens at present, to get them back to full bloom and looking neat and tidy- our Kitchen Garden is a must-visit, filled with planting reminiscent of a Tudor England herb and kitchen garden. Our tearoom has also had a revamp, and is now regularly stocked with fresh lunch options, homemade cakes and scones, soups, and delicious coffee and teas. The Eastbury Manor House Team

‪Excellent visit to Eastbury Manor House which is right in the middle of a housing estate in Barking. Smaller than some of the other National Trust properties but interesting nonetheless. Tours are available and Sue, our guide was excellent and gave us a very detailed and interesting tour. She is very knowledgeable about the house and we thoroughly enjoyed the tour. There was a school party there too which was great. Volunteers dress up in the period costumes and there is a lot to see. Some rooms are being renovated so remain closed. The coffee shop is the best priced to date and very good value. Train to Barking then bus to Tudor Road. House is a few minutes walk from there.‬

‪What a hidden gem. The building is impressive. Our guide, David, was very knowledgable and entertaining. The cream teas are brilliant - which we had in lovely garden. We had a great time. Thoroughly recommended.‬

‪Visited with a friend only to find out that they are only open on Sundays. The front lawn looks pretty sorry and bedraggled. I didn't bother trying to explore the garden.
The house is in a residential area.‬

Hi There, Thanks for visiting; after a prolonged period of reduced opening, we are now open Thursdays, Fridays (10am-4pm) and Sundays (11am-4pm). The gardens are now being maintained more regularly, and our kitchen gardens and walled gardens are also worth a visit. We hope you'll give us another shot, and hope to see you soon- The Team at Eastbury Manor House
