Awful, first greeting is a sign saying you are being monitored, second greeting is pay and display £2.30 per hr, this is Easter holidays and the park is empty, no wonder greedy scum council,

This really is a beautiful country park, with a fabulous array of wildlife. There are plenty of trails and there's something for everyone - a café, biking trails, walking trails, a deer park, grazing livestock, bird hides and lakes/ponds.
However, good luck if you have never been here before. This park is HUGE and if you don't know your way around, you're going to really struggle. There's a map when you arrive, which is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. This place is so big with so many paths that you will have no clue where you are within minutes.
The problems start from the moment you arrive, as there is no signage to tell you how to find the start of any of the trails. Every now and then there might be a vague sign along the way, but parts of where the signs were pointing were areas that were closed. The deer park was also closed. There were two maps that we saw, one of which omitted information that was on the other, which meant we couldn't work out whether we were going the right way or not.
The only reason we managed to get around at all was firstly that we have OS Maps on our phones, and secondly that it was quite busy so we bumped into a few people who thankfully were able to help us out. I really can't understand the lack of signage because there are trees and fence lines everywhere - is it really too much to expect a small sign here and there?
There were so many areas we didn't explore because there were gates but no clue as to where they led, and OS Maps don't help with the internal layout of country parks.
It was great that there were benches dotted around so you could sit down and have a breather when you needed to.
If it helps, there are in fact apparently toilets at the South end of the park, so if you manage the long walk round (about six miles) you can use the loo at the start in the North car park and there's another at the other end (not signposted).
Sadly there was no hand soap in any of the toilets (pretty vile) so you need to bring some with you. You really should be able to wash your hands properly - not much point having social distancing if you can't have clean hands!
The café offerings seemed rather basic so we gave that a miss.
Having said all this, this is a really nice park and unexpected for the area, so it's worth trying to navigate if you can. We did really enjoy it here and would probably visit again.

Beautiful country park with plenty of space for social distancing. Our 2-year-old is a big fan of Gruffalo so he really enjoyed Gruffalo Trail looking for all the characters. Also dog friendly which is great if you want to take your dog for a long walk in woodland.
Lovely cafe with friendly and polite staff. Also allocated picnic area so you can bring your own food. Definitely worth a visit.

A haven during lockdown as a place to have exercise in lovely surroundings even when the weather was poor.
The rangers did a great job keeping the main paths passable in the poor weather although you did need walking boots for many areas.
Now it is returning to normal and it is still great to visit for daily exercise - you can have a short circuit or a longer walk and one often finds new paths to explore.
If you like walking in the woods then it is perfect (and of course they are changing with the seasons) but if you prefer more open spaces then there are plenty at Thorndon South and on the way there from North.

We are regular organised walking club, who use this lovely park on a regular basis. Good amenities throughout, many walking trails, beautiful flowers particularly now, as the bluebells are out. Pond side bird hides are in good condition for spotting. Many species of cattle, sheep etc. Cafe and visitor centre are staffed by informed staff, don’t miss out.

Gruffalo Trail a big let down.
We drove all the way for the kids to enjoy the gruffalo trail, but it literally is a open space with 5 statues randomley placed. Poorley Signposted, there is no challenge and the trail itself wasn't particularly fun for my 3 and 5 year old. They kept asking me wheres the park??? Why aren't the statues real? I wana see a real graffalo. I can't a expect a real grafalo but unfortunately there wasnt even a park. I was very surprised a piece of greenery that big cant invest in a small childrens playing area, after all the grafalo area was created to entice children. Was a big let down.
The park itself was beautiful and I personally enjoyed walking around, the fresh air and taking a picnic. The onsite toilets were decent and parking was the only thing we needed to pay for. The walk was very Buggy accessible but we would have no reason to come back.

Does the gruafflo trial have dogs or is a separate walk? My children are quite scared of dogs...

Same really; enforcing any rule would be a problem. We have found that the vastmajority of dogs are well controlledand pose no more issues here than anywhere else.
What is the price to barbecue?
Diego
لندن, UK590 مساهمة
Thorndon has its own BBQs that it hires out on a first come first serve basis in a dedicated area. However i have never used it myself but you can ring them.

What is the cost of a season ticket for the car park please
Darren_HUk
Chadwell St Mary, UK110 مساهمات
Its about 60 pounds which is very reasonable as it doesn't just cover Thorndon. We have used in Belhus, Danbury, Weald and a couple of other places when walking the dog.
Are dogs allowed in the bbq area of the park?

Please contact Essex County Council who will be able to answer this for you as they operate that part of the park.

The lake used to have plenty of pike in. I've fished there 3 times recently and twice I have seen polish putting pike and bream in a bag.. no ranger comes round, makes me sick that this is happening... tryed to call ranger and no answer the lake has gone to pot... another lake that's been smashed by the foreigners.. what a good fishing lake it USED to be.. before you know it there won't be any carp left in there either.!!!!!

Bringing Grandchildren to follow Gruffalo trail. I have found 2
postcodes on website, CM13 3RU and CM13 3RZ, which is correct please?

CM13 3RZ, is the correct postcode. CM13 3RU is Thorndon Park, which is the original country house that the park surrounded but is now upmarket flats, near Thorndon Golf Club.

We are thinking of a family day out. Possibly over 30 ppl. Would we b allowed low key ball games plus fetch a bbq ?

Yes you can have a BBQ in the South of the park, within the designated BBQ area, near the Pavilion, use Thorndon South Car Park. But please note you need a permit and there is a charge for this, £2 per person, a park ranger will visit you to collect payment. This doesn't include car park ticket which you have to buy separately. However on Sunday and Bank Holidays its £15 per car, payment on entry, and includes parking. For a group of 30 people, this could be a very expensive trip and you may wish to BBQ in one of the other parks in the area. Hope you have a great time!

Could you complete the whole trail with a child in a wheelchair? I would hate not to complete it for him if I could only get his chair so far.

دارتفورد, UK1,352 مساهمة
Go on a dry day and you'll have no problems at all. Much of the route has excellent paths, the other bits can get muddy but are still suitable for an outdoor wheelchair. Have a great time!
