Waltham Abbey town has little to recommend it. Presumably it is too far from railway stations to be a popular commuter town. The Abbey Church is its greatest attraction but it is (amazingly) only open for limited hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is a major Saxon Norman and more foundation set in well kept grounds. And it has a scruffy sign outside saying how limited its hours are. Does the town have so much employment it cannot find any volunteers ? Or is this the new face of the modern Church of England ?
On the other hand there is a really lovely walk north of the town through the water meadows and the two Meridian sculptures (Epping Forest Life Walks). And a trip to Enfield Lock Village to explore the River Lea and the Navigation is well worth it.

What struck me first was the design was quite different to other churches I'd visited recently which I think highlighted regional differences around England. We were lucky as someone was practising on the organ and it is a fine organ. If you're in the neighbourhood it's a must visit.

Lovely church, Norman style. We were welcomed in and there was Music playing quietly in the background which was lovely. Only complaint - it would have been nice for our children to have had a quiz to do as they looked round the church. Lady's Chapel has a nice bookshop and plenty of goodies for the children to buy.

well a few months ago me and my older wife went to the church and we revived some bad vibes however, we went back and had a different experience. my wife and i were seeking a place to renew our vows since our 5 year anniversary is approaching, and the people in the church seemed to want us there. it felt like we were welcomed, which is very nice, so thank you. now, where can we contact for me (24) and my wife (82) to have our vows renewed?

Waltham Abbey as a town hasn't much to recommend it, but the church is a wonderful example of Norman with a bit of Saxon architecture. Inside it was very quiet, peaceful and cool. Perhaps more information about the details of the building and its contents would have been appreciated.

i arrived here with my husband and they instantly given dirty looks and felt very uncomfortable. just because me and my husband aren't the same age doesn't matter, we still love each other. the service was okay i guess but could of been a little better

King Harold II is buried in the graveyard- supposedly- and if he is, I bet he's turning in his grave... All right, the church is nice enough (the ceiling is glorious, and the fresco is impressive) but the delights of Waltham Abbey stop right there.
There is honestly nothing to draw you here- a depressing and more or less abandoned little town.

Very well maintained and very old abbey. It had a peaceful and serene atmosphere. I would have liked some more detailed descriptions of the building and the well-preserved contents. A lovely find in a shabby and boring small town.

Wonderful church that is the final resting place of King Harold ll who was the last Saxon king.
Peaceful and tranquil inside, plus has lovely stained glass and a beautiful ceiling from the Victorian times that was designed by Williams Burges that is made up of signs of the Zodiac.
Whilst it seems strange to have Zodiac signs there, they do have a deeper Christian meaning i.e. my sign for instance Aquarius is the symbol of rebirth to a new life through baptism and the washing away of sin.
Interesting Norman architecture and well worth a visit.
It's also a good chance to take 10 minutes out, reflect and light a candle in memory of loved ones.

Waltham abbey was the last to be dissolved by Henry VIII, probably as the monastery was largely build by king Harold and his wife. After he died in 1066, he was buried in the church. However, when the monastery was dissolved, only the parish part of the church was preserved, hence the grave today lays outside in the "abbey grounds". The church has Saxon as well as Norman elements, and as a parish church it is quite grand. In the lady chapel, now also the shop, there is a pretty well preserved 15th century fresco called doom painting, showing the dead awakening at the end of the world, with in the lower right corner the mouth of hell with the damned being led into it. On the left are the gates and St Peter with the keys (hard to spot!). In the middle sits Christ as judge flanked by angels and saints. The grounds are quite extensive, and when we visited, were very quiet. There are quite a few information boards. So, if exploring the Lea river valley, very well worth the detour.
