‪Kelmscot remains a beautiful place but on a Friday afternoon, with a pre-booked and timed ticket, it was very busy in the small rooms and difficult to appreciate its exceptional charm and unique artifacts. There are lots of room guides some friendlier and/or better informed than others ...It can't be easy, but a good guide book would really enhance the visitor information and experience. With low light levels its generally quite difficult to see the interpretation notes. If we didn't already know about William Morris we would not have learned much from our visit, there are many details to explore. We missed the rose lined front entrance completely... Such a pity, I'm sure Morris planned such details carefully as part of his environment. Small guided groups, such as at Sezincote House, with an experienced and trained guide would perhaps enhance the experience and it would also help protect the furnishings. The room guides are rightly active on this point but with quite crowded, small rooms, its difficult to avoid accidental contact. Rather a pity... Like being told off in school for something never intended.

With busy rooms and limited information it felt a bit disappointing. With little fresh air, I also couldn't help wonder about the impact of condensation on the precious fabrics.

On the plus side, excellent new loos, plus nice orchard tea room and attractive shop. A small, informative, affordable guide book, available at the start, would be a great benefit to visitors keen to learn more...‬

‪Kelmscott is a magical house, full of the work and spirit of William Morris and his circle. Our visit was enhanced by the lovely miniature bookmaking activity run by Jill and Helena in the beautiful Learning Barn. All the staff and volunteers are fantastic.‬

‪My 6th visit to Kelmscott, having returned over a period of 40+ years.

I was delighted to see that the new building developments (which I had been concerned to hear about pre-Covid) look good and fit well with the existing buildings. I'm glad that the cafe has not been extended and is still housed in the present building.

As on all previous visits, staff were supremely helpful and knowledgeable with just the right level of inter-action - never intrusive or 'eavesdropping', but always friendly and informative. I could see that the Manor House had undergone much-needed restoration work in terms of the fabric of the building.

My only slight criticism (and this would only be apparent to someone who's been coming for so many years!) is that I felt the house had lost a certain, intangible 'homely' quality. I know that furniture has been re-arranged according to photographic and other archival evidence, and that's fine - I think it's more to do with the rope barriers and information stands which are now in the rooms. I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that visitors would wander around the rooms more freely before (eg into the window alcove in the room with the Delph-tiled fireplace). I accept that there may be good curatorial reasons for this change, but I did feel restricted and - on a more practical note, I think this causes more congestion; visitors are forced to stop and stand in one position (usually in the doorway).

I also preferred Jane Morris's room with the Willow Bough wallpaper - but that's just a personal preference, and I imagine the changes are a result of recent research!

On the whole, another fantastic visit. Can't wait until the cafe starts to do lunches again too.‬

Thank you for your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your return visit and liked the changes that we have made during the renovation and improvement works. It is unfortunate that you came when we had to rope of a couple of our rooms. This is done as a last resort when we do not have enough stewards to invigilate all our spaces inside the house. We are busy recruiting more volunteers and staff in order to be able to fully open all our spaces and allow visitors to wander around more freely. The new wallpaper in Jane's Room is Fruit and has been identified through photos taken of the room in the year William Morris died by Fredrick Evans. The redecoration of this room, and William's bedroom, we feel helps visitors to see how these rooms were decorated as William and his family knew them.

‪We visited on a beautiful day in mid-May, and William Morris was spot-on with his description of Kelmscott Manor as 'heaven on earth'. We are already avid fans of the PRB and the work of William Morris and his family, so visiting the Manor was a long-overdue treat.

The Manor is a little walk away from the (ample) car park but we saw the shuttle bus regularly coming back and forth for those who needed it. There are several buildings worth noting on the route, and information on these is provided at the Manor.

The route around the building was well-thought out and we were able to take our time wandering the rooms and speaking with the extremely knowledgeable and passionate guides. Needless to say, the work of the Morris family and their associates on display was fascinating and inspiring.

The gardens were immaculate and in full bloom thanks to the time of year. The whole site was very quiet and gave a great sense of peace, so we couldn't help but feel thoroughly relaxed.

We enjoyed tea and cake in the café, at an excellent price. The shop was well-stocked with a variety of Morris & Co items and gifts, however the selection of books was a little underwhelming - we would have loved to see a wider range of these on offer.‬

‪The house and grounds are really interesting and well worth a visit. The guides on the ground and second floors were helpful, knowledgeable and unobtrusive. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for one of the guides on the first floor, who clearly considered her function to be a cross between that of a prison warder in a medium security penitentiary and an early Edwardian schoolma'am. For the purpose of this review, I will refer to her as "Miss T". (Those of you familiar with "Matilda" (Roald Dahl's creation, not the altogether more entertaining creation oh Hilaire Belloc) will understand.)

To elaborate, as we entered the house, the ground floor guide explained to us that there was a one way system in operation, but other than that there were no restrictions: we were free to wander as we pleased, for as long as we cared to do so.

On the first floor I did precisely that, but I had the temerity to turn the handle on a closed door and thus to open it. There was no sign anywhere suggesting that what lay beyond the door was off-limits. It was merely a closed door. It could have been closed by anyone, including another visitor.

Down swooped Miss T. from wherever it was that she had been perched, like Sennacherib's avenging angel itself, and berated me like a naughty schoolboy. I was not permitted to open closed doors; they were closed for a reason (unexplained); how very dare I do such a thing? etc. - all in a voice that could be heard at and, I should add, would have curdled milk at, 100 paces.

Perhaps at this stage I should dispel any wrong impression that you may have formed of me. I am a retired solicitor, retired director of a publicly listed company, retired chairman of an internationally renowned charity etc. This is not intended to big myself up in any way - this review is effectively anonymous so how could it? I simply want it to be understood that I do not display the mien of a thug, hooligan or vandal even when I am relaxing with my equally sedate and respectable wife and friends; quite the reverse in fact: I look and dress my 67 years. I don't even have any visible tattoos.

Of course I did not respond to Miss T. We had not been formally introduced so to have spoken to her would have been a dreadful breach of the etiquette that was so soundly beaten into me as an infant, over my father's knee.

So please do visit Kelmscott Manor; the house and gardens are a delight. Just be sure to be on your very best behaviour, shoes freshly polished and a clean hanky and 4d for the telephone box in your pocket, and fo not let the thought even cross your mind that you are zctually free to wander as you choose, just in case Miss T. is on the prowl.‬

Thank you for your review. We are disappointed that is was marred by an over-exuberant volunteer steward. The area you were interested in accessing is our new temporary exhibition space which will be open to the public from next year. We will discuss your review with our volunteer committee to ensure that we give all our visitors a positive experience.

‪One of the most pleasant visits for a long time. The house is immaculate and the staff so very pleasant and helpful. Nice tea room and very clean toilets. Sensibly an electric mini bus taking visitors from the car park to the house. Charming driver who went the extra length to be helpful. Everything is well signed and the whole experience was delightful. We walked our dogs around the village and there are lots of foot paths. We also visited the church yard where the Morris’s are buried and cleverly a path was mown to their grave. Churchyard was full of primroses and cowslips. Good car parking but disappointingly someone left their dog in the car in the sun and it was looking distressed. Surely everyone knows this is dangerous. We alerted this to a staff member who said he would try and locate the owners. Incidentally there seems to be a lovely pub very close in the village and there was a great aroma coming from it of cooking!‬

Thank you for your review. We are delighted you enjoyed your visit. We do allow dogs on site so it is unfortunate that someone left their dog in their car as we do discourage this from happening as we do not want them distressed.

‪The car park which is almost next to the church where William Morris is buried, is a short walk from the manor. It takes you through the pretty village of Kelmscott. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great the day we visited so we couldn't make the most of the garden. The house more than made up for it; there was much to see and admire relating to William Morris' designs and the NT volunteers were able to pass on interesting information about the house, William Morris and his family. There were also family portraits and photographs displayed. Anyone interested in William Morris should visit the house.‬

‪As a resident of Kelmscott, I wanted to revisit the Manor before conservation and expansion changes this rural retreat for ever. We arrived early afternoon and had an hour to wait before timed entry to the house. We couldn’t have lunch as hot food had run out, but did buy some souvenirs in the shop, which now includes some local products at good prices. Upon entering the house, the room guides were welcoming but the collection is starting to look quite drab, as others have mentioned. Is over exposure having a negative impact? At one time, to protect the collection, visitors were strictly limited to ~12,000 a year I believe, far fewer than current levels of ~20,000 and much less than the 40,000 a year expected in the future, if Lottery Funding conditions are to be met. It is painfully evident however that the house is in need of major conservation and this is something I wholeheartedly support. It is such a pity though that the Manor are funding this conservation by expansion, with new buildings where existing space could have been used instead, rather than trying to preserve the quirky charm and appeal which makes the Manor so unique and worth its expensive entry fee. I just wish that the Society of Antiquaries had concentrated its fundraising on essential conservation work and necessary improvements to facilities only, then they wouldn’t have needed to raise such large sums of money at the expense of the very nature of Morris’s Heaven on Earth and sadly, Kelmscott village. ‬

Thank you for your review. As a resident of Kelmscott we are delighted you chose to use the benefit of free admission we offer to all villagers who visit the Manor when we are open. We have been exceptionally busy in August as more people have, like you, wanted to see the Manor before the repair and improvement works start and, although hot food may have run out, salad lunches and sandwiches were still available. As part of the works we will be enlarging the kitchen area of the tearoom which will allow us to provide a better service to our visitors. We are delighted that you wholeheartedly support the conservation of the manor estate. The estate includes 13 listed buildings and structures, most of which need major structural work to walls and roofs and the vast amount of the grants we have received from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other sources will be focused on essential conservation work and necessary improvements. As well as working on the restoration and improvement of the buildings on site we have allocated significant funds from the grant to improve and expand the field car park at the top of the village to accommodate more cars as well as coaches in order to remove all manor traffic, including staff and volunteers from driving through the village on open days. This will help to preserve the village from unnecessary traffic associated with the Manor, but unfortunately won’t help with the continued issues with the pub which, as you know, has no car park. Our new education building will allow local schools and community groups to visit and will stand on the same space where a building stood when William Morris lived at the Manor. These visitors, as well as coach parties, will be pre booked and will be part of the annual visitor numbers coming to the Manor. However, our public open days will increase from two per week from April to October to three per week for the same period. We have agreed with villagers that we will not open on Sundays. This season shows that a reduction in open days does increase the number of visitors per day arriving at the Manor, as you witnessed when you visited and, by extending our open days by one more day per week should reduce the amount of visitors coming to the manor on individual days.

‪A pleasant stroll through English countryside and a lovely Cotswold village takes you from the car park to the Manor. The less mobile can be dropped off by the house. Or include a visit along your walk on the Thames Path. The house was beautifully restored in the 60s and is hugely evocative of Morris, his wife and interests. The room stewards are well informed and helpful. The garden is a little gem. The cafe offers light lunches and snacks. Go. NOW: it may not open next Summer due to conservation work and other improvements.‬
