‪We spent a couple of hours here today, and experienced a gentle amble through the grounds to look at a large and varied collection of trees, shrubs and flowers.

‪Fantastic place which is well laid out so that one can see almost everything from the gravel paths so no wet feet if it has been raining.

Today the weather was great with a lot of sun. Even at this time of year there is much to see and admire in the beautiful garden. There were a few trees beginning to show autumn colours which added a lot of contrast to the grounds.

The tearoom is excellent as well.‬

Many thanks for your lovely review. As you say even if you only can sit on the terrace in the tearoom you feel energised when you leave. Hope to see you again.

‪This is mainly about the trees, so there is not a lot of colour other than greens. However, it is well laid out and plenty to walk around and plenty to be interested in.

The Kitchen Garden was particularly good and for some reason very fragrant. Nice to see the different varieties of fruit, especially the smaller apples - useful if you are only making small pies.

The cafe offers good range of drinks and simple fare, including a kids menu.

Overall, good value for money‬

Many thanks for your review. Unfortunately, like so many gardens, we have suffered with the extreme heat this year. The autumn colours are always worth a visit and earlier in the year when the rhododendrons, cornus etc are out. I'm glad you enjoyed the tearooms.

‪It has a great variety of plants as well as some interesting walks though these can be a challenge for anyone with mobility problems. Each season has something to offer so repeat visits can be profitable‬

Many thanks for your review Mike and so glad you enjoyed your visit. The autumn colours will be on their way soon. The main gardens are fairly easy going but as you say Park Wood is more challenging but well worth the effort.

‪It was a very hot day in a drought and admittedly, not the ideal time to view the garden which was suffering from heat stress and not at its best. That said we enjoyed walking around mainly in the shade I grant you but we found a very pleasant garden and grounds with lots to see and places to walk or just sit and take it all in. It is a lovely place to relax for a few hours and not that expensive either. The tree varieties are a vision to behold and no wonder it has such a large number of Champion Trees. The cafe I found disappointing. It not that it was bad but it’s just not good enough. Nowadays, they tend to be the focal point of most attractions and therefore an important part of the visit.

The modus operandi of the café was strange and could be more professional but my main criticism falls on the food. The menu is very limited and the food frankly a bit rustic and it all needs upgrading. The specials board seemed to consist mainly of variations of the main menu. I may be being a bit harsh here and limited facilities may be affecting matters but nevertheless for the prices charged I believe the menu and presentation need attention. The staff were friendly, helpful and attentive and their service was much appreciated. None of this would put me off recommending a visit to these gardens.‬

Dear Sir Many thanks for your review as you mention in your review we have extremely intense week and no rain for many weeks. I believe we have faired better than many other gardens locally I have visited. Would it be possible to let me know which day you actually visited so I can follow this up. The tearoom is not a cafe as stated in your review and as such offers light snacks along with traditional things expected in such an establishment - cream teas, afternoon teas etc. We have had to cut down on hot food cooked recently as it is unfair on staff to cook it in such unusually high temperatures. We constantly check our prices with other establishments and feel that our prices are very fair. As I'm sure you are aware everything is constantly going up in price at the moment and we have to cover our costs. The seating system was introduced during Covid and also to make sure that everyone is seated and served as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, if people seat themselves they may then wait some time to be served. Although we value the tearooms and people enjoy that as part of the experience it would not exist without our wonderful gardens which have been opening to the public for over a century. Best Wishes

Many thanks for your review. Unfortunately you chose the one weekend we had rain and we usually advice customers to stick to the gravel paths if they don't have suitable footwear. In the arboretum it is grass due to the nature of this area but there are plenty areas that are not lawned. At present the only plants that are really starting to go over are the rhododendrons and azaleas but many other things are out and the herbaceous borders are changing daily. The plants soon bounce back after the rain which they did need.

‪We visited on a sunny day and saw the gardens in their full glory. The azaleas were in full bloom in both the formal gardens and the wooded ravine. The boarders and rockeries were full of colour and the lawns neatly cut. There wasn't a weed in the kitchen garden and the fruit trees were in flower. The terrace was full of people enjoying the delights of the small café.

Bees and wildlife buzzed around the whole garden happily and there are plenty of seats to stop and just admire the view. It's only £7 to get in; an absolute steal for a visit to this peaceful and tranquil garden.‬

‪Thursday 28th April 2022, My husband and I decided to go to visit Hergest Croft Gardens, which has been owned and run by the ‘Banks’ family for over 200 years, and five generations of them have planted exotic trees and gardened on the Hergest Estate.

The founder of Hergest Croft Gardens was William Hartland Banks (1867-1930) who was a banker, traveller, photographer, gardener and passionate plants man. He married Dorothy Alford (1866-1937) in 1893 and they had Dick and three daughters. Dorothy too was passionate about plants having read natural science at Cambridge.

They built Hergest Croft in 1895 and together they laid out the garden without any professional help although they were much influenced by the writings of William Robinson. Planting continued throughout their lifetime. In 1912 they bought the Hergest Estate including Park Wood and Hergest Court. Many of these trees and shrubs are amongst the earliest plantings of these species in Britain, including introductions from China by Ernest ("Chinese") Wilson for Veitch Nurseries.

The next member of the family was Richard ‘Dick’ Alford Banks (1902-1997) who was an industrialist and Director of ICI. Dick grew up at Hergest Croft and travelled widely with ICI. He lived in Cheshire until 1953 when he returned to Hergest Croft with his first wife, Jane (b1912- 1972) and their children, Lawrence, Peter and Margaret.

Dick Banks brought back the gardens from the neglect caused by World War II, as the house had been requisitioned. He also planted a huge number of trees and shrubs. His interest in maples and birches formed two National Collections. His widow and second wife Rosamund, co-founder of the famous florists Pulbrook & Gould, still continues to care for Park Wood.

Hergest Croft Gardens then came under the care of William Lawrence Banks(b1938) and his wife, Elizabeth (b1941) who have managed the Gardens since 1988 and live at Ridgebourne. They have two sons, Edward and Richard, four grandchildren and three dogs. Lawrence was a banker and Treasurer of the Royal Horticultural Society and Elizabeth is a noted landscape architect and was RHS President from 2010-2013.
In 2017 she was awarded a CBE for services to horticulture. They have continued the tradition of planting newly introduced plants, particularly in the Maple Grove, which they designed and have planted since 1985.

The present day care of Hergest Croft Gardens is under the care of Edward Joseph Banks (b1967) who took over the management of the Estate in 2010. He is married to Julia and they have two children, Freddie born in 1999 and Lucy born in 2002.

In keeping with the ‘Banks’ family tradition he is a banker and a lawyer, and Julia is a teacher and they both care passionately about the Hergest Croft Estate.

My husband and I took a three hour stroll around this lovely estate with its wonderful flowering azaleas, creamy magnolias and stunning rhododendrons in vibrant colours. We walked amongst wonderful specimen trees including a handkerchief tree, oaks, cedars and apple trees with pink and white blossoms.

The grounds were covered with bluebells and everywhere you looked there was an abundance of amazing spring flowers including; tulips in myriad colours of wine, scarlet, yellow, orange and white interweaved with Blue forget-me-knots in amongst wonderful green foliage. Yellow daffodils and white narcissi peeking out from rocks and mosses, it really was a wonderful vista. Inspiration called to me whilst I was here in this lovely garden and I wrote two poems called ‘Spring Smiles’ and ‘Life’s Enigma’.

Afterwards, My husband and I were in need of refreshments so we visited ‘The Mable Tearoom in the lovely Edwardian house. We were seated at a nice table in the window overlooking the lawn. We looked at the menu with its nice selection of light lunches, sandwiches and cakes and made our selection.

My husband had a pot of Ceylon tea with a large slice of lemon and elderflower cake, which he said was delicious. I had a traditional cream tea with warm fruit scones, raspberry jam and whipped cream, which was scrummy and very decadent. I washed this down with a very nice latte coffee. My husband and I spent a pleasant hour here before we collected our car and drove back to our hotel.‬

Hi Carol What a wonderful review and thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely article. You sound like you had a thoroughly good day. Hopefully we will see you again the autumn colours are truly spectacular too. It would be lovely to see your poems. It is a shame we only have a photographic competition but would love to publish them on our board on Autumn Plant Fair if you were willing.
