What a lovely house, so pretty, and with a lovely warm atmosphere. The rooms stewards were friendly and helpful, happy to chat and explain the artefacts. The gentleman in the library was particularly knowledgable and very nice. The cafe is not huge, but it’s lovely for morning coffee and cake, or afternoon tea. We would love to revisit once Ellen Terry’s beetle wing dress returns from America.

Don't let the relative smallness of this site put you off visiting, especially if you are interested in theatre. The fact that Ellen Terry lived here, and has left a rich source of theatrical material to view, is reason enough to visit. On top of that, the guides are exceptionally well briefed about Ellen, her family and the unexpected important mediaeval history of the house and site. There is also a LGBTQ+ link to Sissinghurst's Vita Sackville-West through Ellen's daughter, her partners and their prominence in the suffragette movement etc. Sissinghurst is close by and worth a complementary visit. Don't miss the tea room, which is linked to a remarkably good-sized theatre, where they still put on plays (we were able to have a look around while the set and production were being set up for a forthcoming event).

An interesting property which offers an informative insight into the life of actress Ellen Terry. The house is charming and quirky and well laid out, with a lot to see. There’s also a charming tea room overlooking the garden. It puts nearby Lamb House to shame (both are National Trust properties and we visited them in the same week). The garden isn’t the most exciting, but it’s still very pleasant, especially on a sunny day.

Really quirky place, the staff had some really detailed knowledge of the place and the history.
Really interesting displays, nice little tearoom by the theatre around the back of the property.

A beautiful home in a pretty garden.
What an amazing family story!
So much on display of an amazing woman.
The floors are very uneven which is in keeping with the rest of the place.
Well worth a visit!

I went to the archaeology day, wished I had not! I was accosted by some silly girl washing old pots who asked me what I was doing there!! She wanted to look in my bags!!They seem to employ some very odd people

No idea why - but we love gardens in England where you can visit all the sites and also stay in lovely gardens, learn a lot of history, and finalize your visit with a cup of tea.

This is not a very big house by National Trust standards but it is packed full of interesting theatrical memorabilia. There is also a nice little cafe, a small garden and a good orchard. We really enjoyed our visit.

Plenty of parking in the lay-by near the house. We didn’t know too much about Ellen Terry before arriving at the house but went away full of interesting facts about her and her family. The guide, Julian, was incredibly well informed and was a pleasure to talk to. The house itself is full of memorabilia and is so interesting. The gardens were pretty to walk around and it was nice to see the writing hut at the far end of the garden. We finished our visit with a cold drink from the cafe and sat in the sunshine - a perfect way to finish off a lovely couple of hours.

The building was small, however the interpretation was fantastic. Amazing information on Ellen Terry, loved seeing images of her throughout her life dressed as different characters. I enjoyed my visit here much more than sissinghurt castle and gardens. I think that was down to the way in which Ellen Terry’s story was told through objects, info and pictures. Whoever was in charge of curating the space is amazing. Also loved how she restored the building back in a time where male architects were destroying medieval churches and fitting them out with modern features. Ellen Terry really was an extraordinary woman. P.S the orange and poppyseed cake was yummy!

What other National Trust Properties are nearby?

Nearby are some great places to visit. They are not all NT attractions. The wonderful gardens at Great Dixter, Northiam, E Sussex; Bodium Castle, Kent; the Bedgebury Pinetum, Goudhurst, Kent; The Aspinall Foundation Wild Animal Park, Port Lympne; Penshurst Place; Chiddingstone Hamlet & Castle?; Chatham Dockyard; Kent and East Sussex railway from Tenterden to Bodium and just travelling around the Kent & Sussex Weald. Tenterden town with The White Lion would make a good base for trips out.
