This is a fantastic day out. A 4-hour trip in a brake van pulled by a steam loco exploring the whole of the vast site of Scunthorpe steelworks. Everyone involved is passionate and well informed and with a running commentary (informative and amusing) the whole day is wonderful. Lunch is taken in a lovely, converted railway carriage and provides a toilet stop. Would recommend to anyone interested in steam trains or UK industrial heritage/history. Many thanks to, Roger, Colin, John and Keith for making our day so enjoyable.

What a fantastic dedicated group of people doing a great job. Not only a train ride but an outside guided tour of this vast complex.
I visited as a schoolboy but never realised the sheer size of the place.
Sadly we had come away earlier than we wanted to due to other commitments but had a really great time.
I would thoroughly recommend this experience to anyhow who wants an interesting informative and original steam train ride and experience

We went on one of the Appleby Fordingham Railway Preservation Society’s Scunthorpe Steelworks Railtours, which takes your around Great Britain’s largest industrial railway.
Hauled by a steam locomotive, we spent several hours exploring the vast site and seeing how rail has enabled the production of steel in Scunthorpe for generations.
Volunteer Andrew’s commentary was fantastic and we really felt like we had a truly unique experience.

What an amazing experience!!!! Absolutely fascinating and extremely dramatic. A wonderful birthday treat. Roger the tour guide was extremely professional. All of the staff were brilliant. Special thanks to the driver who invited me into the cab and explained all the workings of the steam train. Highly recommended.

We have been twice - one well before COVID and one between lockdowns. the site is amazing, full of industrial history and a very unique railway. The loco's are well presented and the group are working hard to keep the history alive. Its full of atmosphere and on both visits we have been to different parts of the site and on different tracks - each trip is unique. We will be back again!

Really excellent day out on a Pacer drive. There were no boring long classroom lessons then a 10 minute drive like other heritage railways, this was hands on rightaway with a proper 2 hour driving experience in a very unique interesting setting. Hosts were very friendly and welcoming and really insightful and helpful. They struck the perfect balance of always being there ready to help without detracting from any of the fun of doing all the driving yourself. Cannot recommend enough!

We went for the prebooked brakevan tour which worked very well with COVID restrictions and, as railway enthusiats, we enjoyed more than the convential train ride in ordinary carriages. As it was a miserable day all the vans had lit stoves, with full buckets of coal in which was most appreciated when we went in for a brief warm up.The trip was really interesting, varied and certainly long enough to feel you got your money's worth. You got up close to the exciting bits and could feel the warmth of the torpedo wagons as they passed by. You got to see plenty of rail operations inside the works too. There was a brief stop at the end to have a cuppa at the engine sheds and friendly staff were on hand to answer questions etc. The weather turned atrocious as the trip went on which curtailed our visit to the sheds but that is not the fault of the railway! There are a couple of things that prevent me giving a full 5 stars: The extensive commentary was inaudible unless the train was stationary so it would have been better to have waited until we were stopped and then give us some info, whereas the speaking was whilst we were on the move, and then stopped when we stopped....I would've really liked to have heard it as the snippets I did catch sounded very interesting. Also, a map of the works inside the wagon or a paper handout would have been really helpful as we like to know where we are going. We brought our own map book which turned out to be totally out of date and it got very wet! Finally, and it may be impossible, but somewhere to use the loo and get a drink BEFORE getting on the train would be a real improvement to the whole thing, as having travelled 3 hours to get there we had to get on board without facilities. They DID warn you of this before hand but provision of a loo at the entrance should be a real priority for the railway. Having said all of this, it was a brillant experience and we would highly recommend to all our enthusiast friends. Thanks AFRPS.

Myself and a friend went today on their brake van tour, and we both had a great time and will be back again. It is a really interesting place, and get up close to the workings of the Steelworks.

Attended the February brake van tour of Scunthorpe Steel Works by Appleby and Froddingham Preservation Society. The ride is four hours long, plus a visit to the engine shed. The team are so welcoming and tell you bits about the steel works as you travel round. Such a different trip being able to see heavy industry so close up. The whole thing is run on a donations basis. You must book. Excellent, fascinating, brilliant for photographers and those interested in steam and industry. Do go.

Had been meaning to visit this operation for some time and managed to do so on this occasion. We booked (which is essential), via the Brigg Tourist Information Centre and received friendly email communications regarding our requirements. Our "brake van" tour of the steel works, enabled us to really appreciate the massive scale of the operation. Our tour included direct visits to ground and higher level areas of the plant. Apart from the unseasonably cold day, the tour provided a "different" and "individual" experience that is well worth undertaking. The free tours are operated by volunteers and we were more than willing to provide a donation on the conclusion of the tour.

No it doesn't run on 19th but on 16th of September look on facebook "Appleby Frodingham Railway Preservation Society" is not like other heritage you turn up this is booking advance only by the phone the specification date that you wish to go it is free but donate at the end of the tour. Two type of tours first is midday with DMU coach include seat and toilet it only go 50% of tracks by diesel. If you want the full tracks it will be in evening but with no seat you have to stand approx 3 hours in brake van with steam. The car park is free 100 yards to the platform.
