Found this very easily. It was clearly signposted. Parked up easily in the big riverside car park, walked over the bridge into the park and could see the castle clearly from there. You have to book a time slot online, but if you’re early there are shops and a nice church to look around. Castle was great and there’s some of the Staffordshire Hoard there. Walked back through the park and called at the cafe for coffee and a lovely doughnut. A great day out.

A great example of a Motte and Bailey castle with lovely gardens, and plenty of seating, leading down to the River Tame. Did not have time to tour inside but well worth a looksee. Near the top of the Old Town close to the statue of Sir Robert Peel. Enjoy.

Just recently been to Tamworth Castle ( Saturday 21st may ) we prebooked online to make sure we got a slot time and checked the closing time and thought we could browse at our leisure as it was open until 4pm , The castle itself is amazing from what we saw , Now when we went with our tickets the staff did not mention to us that there was going to be a WEDDING at 1pm and we would have to leave early . We was half way round the castle and was then told we have 6 minutes to vacate the castle as their is a wedding and the castle was closing to the public, I did question the staff as to if we could come back on Sunday as we had only been in an hour but what did we get SILENCE , Now wouldn’t you think that Tamworth Council would put it on their website if there was going to be a wedding or the staff notify us before we even got in the castle as I would of swapped it to Sunday, If you want to go here I would check if they have a wedding going on first if you choose Saturday ,

What a lovely place to visit and so full of history it will take you a while to get around if you decide to read everything. We visited on a sunny day so it made the castle look ace on photo's. The castle itself is bang in the middle of the town and there is a car park 5 minutes away which is only £1.50 for all day which is a bargain. The castle itself cost a tenner to get in but its so worth it you won't be disappointed it's really is a great day out to be had by all.

Amazing castle, really well preserved including the Norman herringbone wall on the approach to the main gate. Some fun exhibits which you can get hands on with. Highlight of the visit was Ralph the volunteer at the Staffordshire hoard exhibition, his knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject is worth the entrance fee alone!! We really enjoyed it, if I was being picky somewhere to get onsite refreshments would of been good as it would save going into the town. A good place to visit, probably not a full day but a good couple of hours

Despite living in the Tamworth area I am embarrassed to say I have never been here before. As a young lad (many years ago) I missed the school trip to visit and never thought to go again. A very good friend of mine said how lovely it actually was and how much history was behind it so I thought why not give it a look. The weather was not too bad so I decided to go on my own and see what the fuss was about. The entire visit took me about one and a half hours and it was very well maintained and genuinely a real eye opener. I loved every minute of it and I will definitely be back. The admission was very fairly priced and the staff I met were very kind and helpful putting up with my thousands of questions.

Nice little place to visit for an hour, well worth the price of admission, very well laid out. Very close to the river and nearby town centre.

A perfect example of a remaining Motte and Bailey Castle which stands proudly atop it's mound. This castle is in great shape even after all these years and is great fun for people of all ages. It is filled with history with a good mix of time periods as it has had new sections built on to it since it was first built by the Normans. It may look small but is deceptively large and the tour takes you onto the castle walls, to the top of the tower and through several well furnished rooms. My only slight gripe was that there was a school group which got a little noisy and was using up the final room of the tour, so I did not get to have a proper look around that room. But that's a minor gripe which I will not hold against it. Would well recommend to anyone who enjoys a good castle and taking in some local history.

We really like the angle saxon period, so the history of this castle was really good. This was the ancient capital of Mercia. Althenflaed, Lady of the Mercians, raised King Athelstan here and it was one of the burgs she created to hold back the Vikings. It was built before Offa’s time. Excellent display on the Anglo Saxons, as well as later years. The present castle is the second highest in England and has been owned by various people throughout its history – mostly people closely related to the king. Pieces of the Stafford Hoard were on display in the castle, which were from mid 7th century. Much of it was jewelry, sword decorations and a couple helmets. Also located within the original castle walls was St Ruffins well, which was dedicated to a son of King Wulhere, who the King had slain for being a Christian. Just down the block was the ancient St Editha Church. The town itself is really nice as well.

How long does it take to walk around with young children?
TamworthCastle
Tamworth, UK
While Tamworth Castle is quite small, there are 15 different rooms - along with the courtyard and other hidden gems - each giving a glimpse into the Castle's past and how it has changed over the centuries. We also now have a lot of interactive, hands-on displays, a small cafe and gift shop so it probably takes a couple of hours to get around, depending on how interactive you get. The Castle is also surrounded by extensive grounds which has a great play park, crazy golf, cycle hire and so much more!

Hi Trevor
Intend to visit the Castle, how much time is required to look round at a leisurely pace? and you mention parking will we need more than two hours. Teresa

مساهمتيْن
it takes roughly an hour to an hour and a half to get around the building, depending on how much time you spend looking and reading at everything on display. Time is also affected by any events that may be taking place, all of which are advertised on the Castle Website
the car park at the bottom of the slope (closest to the castle) is a short stay 2 hour car park, but there is another one, close to the Beefeater/Hotel that is an all day set price car park which may be better, its about 5/10 minutes away from the Castle itself but you get a walk through the Castle Grounds and by the river.
