‪When visiting different areas, there is nothing better than checking out some 'brown sign' places of historical interest and if you're in Surrey or the general south east, this is well worth a visit. The 13th Century site was the first Cisterian settlement in the UK, has an intriguing history and is free to enter. As well as seeing the preserved remaining buildings on the site, enjoying the surrounding countryside and lake and reading the information boards, you can also download an audio tour from the English Heritage website. It is only around 20 minutes long and makes it easier to envisage how the settlement would've looked back in the day with simple instructions telling you where to stand while it explains what it would have been like. Also via the audio tour, you can find out about the 'dragon's teeth' Second World War concrete defences along the river and go to see them. The history really is enchanting and the tour enlightening. Our only regret was not visiting the nearby Farnham Castle Keep - also free to enter - first as when we got there it was closed. These two venues are ideal to do together if you fancy a morning or afternoon exploring some of Surrey's history. Just be aware the Castle Keep closes around 3pm or 4pm, depending on which day you go and what time of year it is.‬

‪This is a lovely site with a wonderful back drop of Waverley Mansion. The site is on the meander of the river and is lovely to walk around and discover. I would recommend downloading the tour as there are not too many boards around the site. Well worth going to though.‬

‪Beautiful ruins in a picturesque area by the river wey. Once you park you walk along the water to the ruins itself. Step into history and explore.‬

‪Great place to visit. Free and doesn't take very long, but it's an excellent experience and some interesting information there. I would have liked a little more interpretation and history (just because I'm a geek) but was a good little visit with the family for a morning. The car park is small but we went off-peak and had no problem parking. ‬

‪Good place to stop if in the area and have some spare time. Not a huge amount to see but the ruins which remain are well explained by information boards. Location also quite pleasant for a picnic. ‬

‪Small car park and a lovely walk along the river before you come to the Abbey ruins. Until you actually get there you don't realise how big it is. In its heyday it must have been enormous. Definitely a hidden gem thats well worth a visit.‬

‪I have lived around this area for years and I did not realise this was here, but I’m so pleased to have discovered this little gem.
We went on a beautiful sunny summers afternoon and the Abby looked splendid.
There is a car park but it is pretty small so parking is limited.
The Abby is a short walk from the car park and easy to get to.
The Abby offers the best of both worlds as it’s a good place to have a picnic with the family or a romantic trip with your partner.

‪It was a short drive to the abbey so we thought we’d check it out. Just myself and my 16 year old son. We both loved it. It’s a short walk down the path to reach the Abbey (just out in a big field). There are some historical markers with the story of the ruins and diagrams of what it used to look like.

We stayed about 45 minutes but loads of people there with dogs and picnic lunches A small creek runs along the back and there’s a duck pond near the entrance.

Definitely worth the trip ‬

‪It's the common story of an abbey built on a meadow near the river in the 12th century, then the King falls out with the Pope, so snatches it in the 16th century and gives the abbey and its land to one of his nobles. It then falls into decay, with its stone being reused in nearby houses as it becomes a picturesque ruin in the landscape of the new 18th century house.

Waverley Abbey, founded in 1128, was the first Cistercian Abbey in England, located alongside the River Wey (which was perhaps not that sensible given that the river has frequently flooded). It was never a rich abbey and, when suppressed in 1536 by Henry VIII, there were only 15 monks living here.

Waverley Abbey House was built on the land in 1723, probably using some of the stone from the abbey buildings, with a new lake separating it from the ruins.

What little remains of the abbey dates from a 13th century rebuilding after flooding, primarily the vaulted undercroft of the lay brothers' refectory, part of the chapter house and of the two transepts of the church.

It is a pleasant place to visit even on a cold cloudy bank holiday Monday,, though car parking is challenging at busy times. So, if you can, visit at quiet times ‬
