‪Tranquil place, ideal for a blanket picnic on a good dry day, situated next to the river, lovely and peaceful‬

‪Great place to visit. Free and doesn't take very long, but it's an excellent experience and some interesting information there. I would have liked a little more interpretation and history (just because I'm a geek) but was a good little visit with the family for a morning. The car park is small but we went off-peak and had no problem parking. ‬

‪Good place to stop if in the area and have some spare time. Not a huge amount to see but the ruins which remain are well explained by information boards. Location also quite pleasant for a picnic. ‬

‪Small car park and a lovely walk along the river before you come to the Abbey ruins. Until you actually get there you don't realise how big it is. In its heyday it must have been enormous. Definitely a hidden gem thats well worth a visit.‬

‪I have lived around this area for years and I did not realise this was here, but I’m so pleased to have discovered this little gem.
We went on a beautiful sunny summers afternoon and the Abby looked splendid.
There is a car park but it is pretty small so parking is limited.
The Abby is a short walk from the car park and easy to get to.
The Abby offers the best of both worlds as it’s a good place to have a picnic with the family or a romantic trip with your partner.

‪It was a short drive to the abbey so we thought we’d check it out. Just myself and my 16 year old son. We both loved it. It’s a short walk down the path to reach the Abbey (just out in a big field). There are some historical markers with the story of the ruins and diagrams of what it used to look like.

We stayed about 45 minutes but loads of people there with dogs and picnic lunches A small creek runs along the back and there’s a duck pond near the entrance.

Definitely worth the trip ‬

‪It's the common story of an abbey built on a meadow near the river in the 12th century, then the King falls out with the Pope, so snatches it in the 16th century and gives the abbey and its land to one of his nobles. It then falls into decay, with its stone being reused in nearby houses as it becomes a picturesque ruin in the landscape of the new 18th century house.

Waverley Abbey, founded in 1128, was the first Cistercian Abbey in England, located alongside the River Wey (which was perhaps not that sensible given that the river has frequently flooded). It was never a rich abbey and, when suppressed in 1536 by Henry VIII, there were only 15 monks living here.

Waverley Abbey House was built on the land in 1723, probably using some of the stone from the abbey buildings, with a new lake separating it from the ruins.

What little remains of the abbey dates from a 13th century rebuilding after flooding, primarily the vaulted undercroft of the lay brothers' refectory, part of the chapter house and of the two transepts of the church.

It is a pleasant place to visit even on a cold cloudy bank holiday Monday,, though car parking is challenging at busy times. So, if you can, visit at quiet times ‬

‪We stumbled across this on a day out, we parked in the small car park and walked past a beautiful river full of wildlife, very beautiful short walk to the ruins, it is very atmospheric and intriguing, we took lots of photos and sat be the little river behind the Abbey, not very often you can visit places like this for free which made it even better, well worth a visit‬

‪Waverley Abbey is a delight. Easily reached and totally free. The abbey itself consists of a small myriad of ruins, with some architecturally beautiful arches still intact. It's a great place to wander around by yourself, on a date or with the kids. I've also seen picnics and dog walkers here.
If you're feeling a little adventurous, skirting round to the back of the ruins, if you were to take one of the slightly overgrown paths towards the stream, there is a collection of world war one anti tank defences (or so I believe). Again, a beautiful little spot to explore.
The car park is free but essentially a very small dirt lay by of sorts on the bend of the road. Fortunately I have a very small car so I've never had any issues finding a spot to park.
The car park and ruins are also very close to Madam Ludlow's Cave, a short walk up the hill from the car park.‬

‪Lovely picturesque scenery, 5 minute walk to and from the car park (parking not great especially on a warm day like today), the Abbey is kept in lovely condition, no litter at all! Surroundings are great, perfect for a short walk or a place to have a picnic lunch!‬
