‪A pot-pourri of experiences‬
سبتمبر 2021
‪An interesting building and grounds. Several separate themes emerged - the links to George Washington, which required close analysis; the history of a deteriorating building and its use as providing cramped tenements; and the vision of a local schoolmaster. I found focusing and the interpretation of a central piece of art difficult.
Adequate local parking and plenty of hospitality and items of wider interest around the nearby village green‬

‪Tony the room guide maketh the visit.‬

‪On a visit to Bishop Auckland and found this on the NT app and boy are we glad that we did!! Both of the staff we met were AMAZING! Tony the guide was excellent, we asked him to tell us everything he knew and he did not disappoint, keeping us fully engaged for the next 20 minutes. No question went unanswered and he was knowledgeable, funny and interesting. We then toured this 12th century house with many later additions and marvelled at the timeline through the Bishop of Durham, Charles II, James I, Cromwell interspersed with George Washington's relatives, slump tenements and finally the ownership of the NT.
The gardens were pretty and trees laden with unpicked fruit, which were too delicious not to scrump and taste!
A very memorable visit thanks in great part to Tony. ‬

‪A great afternoon‬

‪We are National Trust members so are able to enter this property for free. I did book tickets online in advance though but I needn’t have worried as it was not that busy when we arrived. All of the staff were extremely friendly from the lady on the gate to the man who gave us lots of information about the house when we entered. It was a lovely, sunny day and the gardens were beautiful. There were musicians playing lovely tunes and my daughter was able to play in the playground and also with the beanbags. The house itself is not large but is extremely interesting. To be honest, I did not really like the art installation but the volunteer explained all of the references to our party and it was rather interesting but just not my cup of tea. I really enjoyed seeing the room upstairs that had been designed to show how the coal mining families would’ve lived as tenants when the house had been converted for that purpose. We passed a lovely couple of hours here.‬

‪Interesting history‬
يونيو 2021
‪It's not a large house & has been extensively restored, not in the character that George Washington's family would have been living in before going to USA. At present there's an art installation in the entrance hall, all I can say is that it's strange/interesting/& got us talking! Very interesting information boards upstairs & I loved the ones about the school teacher who instigated the restoration of the place after WW2.‬

‪Interesting links to Anglo/American history‬
زوجان • يوليو 2021
‪This is a modest old house which has been very well restored, with some fascinating family links to the 1st President of the USA. We were given a brief but helpful introduction by 2 volunteer guides, then left to explore the house. There's also an art installation based on local & US history, which should appeal to children of all ages. The gardens are also modest, but with a good variety of plants, including fruit trees.

For anyone visiting the area, this is well worth a couple of hours of your time‬

‪Not just about George ...‬
يوليو 2021
‪The old Hall is a relatively modest manor house, but aprt from its historical signifcance, it has some beautiful garders.
The history is not just related to the US President, but it has a wider significance in terms of the social ena economic history of County Durham, and, in particualr, mining communities.

Our guide gave us a good overall introduction to the house, and then left us to explore at our own pace.

Worth a visit ...‬

‪Lovely house with enthusiastic guides‬

‪An interesting visit to a house with links to George Washington. The story of the house was well presented and the guides were enthusiastic and informative, especially Anthony on reception. The gardens are quite large and well kept with all round year interest. There is a leaflet to walk round the village which is well worth doing. Beautiful and a lot of good information boards. A hidden gem.‬

‪Nice NT visit‬
فبراير 2020
‪Visited on route to Souter Lighthouse. We are NT members so thought it would be worth a visit.
Interesting house with very good age appropriate trails for our 2 children, we thought the quiz for older children was particularly good.
Very small gardens and outdoor play area. We only spent about 1 hour here, but it was nice to visit a new NT place and makes a good day out teamed with Souter lighthouse.‬
