‪Excellent Theatre, world class shows!‬
العائلة • فبراير 2020
‪This is a wonderful place. It’s not a very large theater, but it’s big enough, and very comfortable. Their productions are superb. This is my third show here, and I must say, Arthur Miller’s A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE, is a world class production. The acting, their accents, the stage and sound are all excellent.

We had earlier seen Guys and Dolls, (excellent) the pantomime Cinderella (amazing interaction with audience) and now this. Highly recommended! ‬

‪Always a good night out, and fantastic value.‬

‪Although run completely as an amateur venue, it matches in quality and diversity of performance most professional settings. We went this time to see a film-Little Women. Films are shown three times over a weekend. I find multiplexes too loud and I suffer from migraines from them. Watching a film at Rugby Theatre (as well as their shows) is a much pleasanter experience.‬

‪Lovely Theatre, a real gem in the centre of town‬

‪Lovely little theatre, great atmosphere, friendly staff, excellent value. It hosts live shows and films. Although this is an amateur theatre company the quality of shows is excellent and at a price far below the commercial equivilant.
We as a group of friends go to all of their shows and all their films.‬

‪First visit and impressed.

One little niggle some of the volunteer staff are a bit eager to include themselves

We seemed to be singled out that we couldn't use or mobiles whilst actually checking in on facebook! Oh and others around us continued to use theirs.

The performance was top notch.

Will look to see what else is on in the future.‬

‪Went to see The little shop of horrors. Was so suprised how well done it was for amatuer actors, set was very good and main prop "the plant" was great. Liked the idea we all had to go accross the road for interval break and refreshments. Something different and will be going again soon .‬

‪OK venue. Original features. Tight seats. Genuine service, aiming to please the viewing customers. Would be better if there were some larger-size seats available for the occasional barge-arse.‬

‪Good night out‬

‪I went with my daughter to see Ben Hur at Rugby theatre. Although it is a small theatre it doesn't really feel particularly so and there is a good view of the stage. The show was really well done and there was an interval.Toilets and refreshments were adequate for the size of the venue and the staff are helpful and friendly. I would definitely go again and very much recommend it. It did us both good! 😊‬

‪The 550 seat Cinema first opened its doors way back in September 1913 as cine-variety the first proper brick built Cinema in Rugby by a chap called Mr B.Morris a local man who lived in Bilton that it seems owned it and named it the Empire Picture Palace later called the Empire. Though it was primarily a Picture House it had a reasonable though very small stage that had variety acts on from time to time. 1923 it became The Scala till 1946 when it closed after a fire. (Apparently there were four fires in its time mainly due to the flammable nature of the film and the carbon arc projectors runing at temperatures in excess of 3000c half the temperature of the surface of the sun in fact it’s no wonder there were so many fires in Cinemas back then. Really it’s a wonder there were not more given the almost non existent fire regs and the nature of film and methods of projection. Not to worry though today’s projectors are digital as is the films) The Granada company took it over but never opened it no doubt to stop any competition with the other Cinema’s it operated in Rugby now owning all four. In 1947 as it was not productive and a waste of money it was sold to Rugby amateur acting groups who came together and formed The Rugby Theatre group with the proviso they did not show films or compete with the Granada’s other assets. The new Rugby Theatre group refurbished it within its limited funding enlarging the stage thus reducing the seating capacity plus giving the audience more leg room and opened in December 1949 as, you guessed, calling it ‘Rugby Theatre’. A some point the Theatre group also made a bid for the Railway Terrace Picture House but the Council turned them down because of potential parking problems? But that’s not the end of the story of the site as a Cinema because in 1976 the Granada the only Cinema left in Rugby closed and became a Bingo Hall where it stayed till 2011 and was almost immediately unbelievably, demolished. The Rugby Theatre inherited the nearly new seats from the Century in 1976 where the Bingo was held after the transfer to North Street and used them until 2010, With no restraints now imposed by Granada or competition the Rugby Theatre once again started to show films as Rugby no longer had a venue to show movies using a variety of projectors including those produced by good old BTH, as well as its stage productions. So the oldest proper Picture house in Rugby outlasted all the others and is still very popular with its Rugby fan base serving as both a Cinema and Theatre.‬
