The two of us chose to do the top walk - the loop. From there we could look down into the gorge and see the wonderful rock formations resembling the Bungle Bungles. I took my Nordic poles which was probably a good idea. There are plenty of steps but otherwise it was an easy walk.

I can't believe that I only recently discovered this magical place, after 15 years of living in the district. The road in is probably better suited to 4WD rather than my low coupe, so glad it was a fine day. Basic facilities of drop toilet, picnic table and information map. Two options for walks: due to mobility (knees) I took the easier. Quite a lot of steps, some large and uneven, and also a bit of boulder-clambering involved. Walking poles came in handy.
The effort was so worth it as we reached the gully floor. Amazing ancient rock formations, large tree ferns, peppermint gums, and other vegetation. A short boardwalk takes you to a peaceful spot for meditation amongst the forest, and if you're lucky you will see lyrebirds (we did, fleetingly). My younger, fitter companion took the other track out, and discovered several lookouts. Apparently a LOT of stairs on this route.
Highly recommended, but perhaps not in summer.

Our group of ten arrived soon after a morning shower and the whole area smelt so fresh. It was a great walk, heading down to the gully (and around a few rocks) but well worth the slight effort. From the bottom standing amongst the ferns, the views upwards into the stunning rock formations were just ‘Jurassic’.
With no other walkers during our visit, it was perfectly quiet and magical.

Spent a relaxing time walking through Ferntree Gully near Rylstone. Walk is easily located at the end of a dirt road. I did the loop and lookout walks. Really beautiful landscape and lots of birds. Saw 2 lyrebirds on the lookout track. Highly recommend if your in the area as you only need 1-2 hours.

What a magical place! Some scrambling required in a few places but not difficult for anyone of average fitness. Felt like proper untouched bush within a deep limestone gorge. Highly recommended.

We started this walk on a very hot day but there had been heavy rain/storms a couple of days prior. The gully was unbelievably amazing, moist and mossy and shady with dripping water and waterfalls. Unlike anything we have done before. Loads of birds and a goanna. At one point the storm had washed down so much debris we thought the track might be impassable however we managed to clear enough to slip through.
The steps up and out provided some lovely views. We took the wheelbarrow track back due to it getting so warm however we will take the lookout track next time.
We will return. Wear runners and bring water.

We read about this walk in the Mudgee tourism guide and as we enjoy hiking thought we would make the trip.
As others have said when you drive through the dry forest you have no idea what's awaiting you.We saw 2 wild piglets on our drive in.
You walk quite quickly in to a chasm filled with tree ferns, you look up and the rock walls are amazing. It is very still and quiet as you walk along the path and over or between rocks as you progress.
It must be even better following rain when the forest floor is damp. At the end of the valley you climb up, quite steep. Along the ridge there are some great lookout.
This rates as one of the most spectacular walks we have done, and we have done a lot!
There are drop toilets at the Carpark. You need to wear either hiking footwear or shoes with good tread.

We like doing local walks when visiting different areas. This has a good track but at times you will be climbing over rocks. Even though the drought has affected this walk it’s still worth doing. Take water with you
