Pretty amazing place to see but make sure you are up for it. As a senior with mobility issues I use 2 hiking poles when I'm out walking most places. We walked around to the front of Bald rock as my daughter wanted me to see it from that view and also assess whether or not I could make it up 'the short route'. HA!!
I got part way up and decided it was going to be way too steep for me so we decided to go 'around the rock' which was a gradual climb I believe around 2 1/2 km or more.
I found this long steady incline to be VERY challenging at times and seriously thought I would not make it.
I pushed myself to get to the top but I would NOT recommend it unless you have lots of time, good walking shoes, Water. There are no places to have a rest along the way (no benches) and no bathroom facilities so I strongly suggest that you BE PREPARED.

This was our second trip to Bald Rock. Its a great day trip that offers an exhilarating walk rewarded with unbelievable 360 degree views. There are two routes to the top - straight up the rock face or via a graded trail that takes a little longer but is much easier on the knees and traverses through a beautiful ‘garden’ of massive granite boulders before emerging near the summit. We’re found the best way is to take the left path at the track fork around 50m from the carpark, walk up through the rock garden to the top, then walk straight down the rock face to return to the carpark. Return trip was just a bit over an hour.

One of the best things we have done throughly recommend it. We intended to do the longer gradual climb to the summit but took the wrong turn & ended up at the base, so we had a go at climbing the face. We are both in our 60’s but we took our time & got to the top. After the 720m climb it was a further 500m to the summit which is worth every step when you reach the top. Spectacular, 360 degree views & the colour of the granite changes depending on where you stand. We then took the gradual path down & enjoyed more rock formations.

A remarkable geological formation with the most spectacular views. There are two ways up. The hard way is amazing, but is really hard, particularly if you are unfit like me.
White dots mark the “easiest” route up the granite face. Not something you’d do in the middle of the day. The toughest part is the start. Once you reach the ridge it becomes easier. So well marked out. There is a longer loop walk, which is apparently much easier and in shade for most of the way.
The summit provides you with 360 degrees and is unbelievably rewarded. The colours of the granite face are also very cool.
One of the best things I’ve done, and well worth the effort.

We have been to Bald Rock a few times over the years and just love visiting every time. It is such a stunning view. As we are older now we avoided the walk up the rock face. But love the walk through the bushland and we managed the walk down the rock face quite easily. It's just one of those spectacular places everyone should visit if they can.

We walked up the front face of Bald Rock - very steep and not good if you are afraid of heights! I would also avoid the front face in the rain (there is a longer path that goes up the side). My kids raced to the top, and enjoyed leaping from boulder to boulder.
Once at the very top (following the markers) the views are amazing. We spent around 30minutes looking around at the different colours of the granite.
There is a longer walk to the top (about 5km return) which winds to the top, in a more gentle approach. We returned this way from the top, and it was also great to see more of how the granite has shaped the area.

A must to visit and hike this beautiful quartz rock area.
Beautiful scenery, amazing hike up the face of the rock to summit the top to views over the surrounding bush and other rock surrounding.
Fantastic hike 11/10.
Wear proper hiking shoes, quartz is super slippery if wet.
Climb up is very steep but manageable if you pace yourself.
Easy markers, walk levels off at the top and is spectacular.
We hiked up the face and returned via the bush track, extra 2.1k but beautiful bush and rock caves on the return, orchids, wildlife.
Great option to do both or if you come down it’s very steep and hard on the knees and ankles so beware. Hiking poles are a great support option.
Views 10/10
A must to do, also great picnic grounds and camping here in the national park.
Park fees $8,00 cash is needed.
Cannot recommend this place enough.

Make sure you bring $8 cash for entry into the National Park. There's no credit card facilities available.
A great experience. Well worth the effort!

Camped there, so a great walk after breakfast. Very realistic times on the signage. We went the long way but so worth it. Under 2 hours to the top and back. You need water and good shoes and a camera. Snack at the top was enjoyable. Breathtaking views all around. Steep way looked scary going down but if fit probably good going up. Great that there is two ways to get there.

Plan well to have good shoes, plenty of water and good hat which won’t blow off. Needs reasonable fitness to manage , but the ascent is so worth doing.

Hi there
Do you have to pay to walk the rock?

Hi. You do have to pay a day visitor's fee per vehicle at the National Park. I can't remember how much it is, but it is only a modest amount. At the little information bay there, you put cash into an envelope which is provided. National Parks website would have the day fee amount listed.

Does it get fully booked out over Christmas/New Year? We are wanting to come over 2nd January. Thanks

The camping area at bald Rock is not that large so it would not take too many to fill it up especially at holiday times and looking at the facilities I would not like to be there if it was. However the advice to ring the Tenterfield info centre is a sound one as they should be able to provide info on how many sites are taken etc so that you can make a factual decision.
If you go do the long walk up and the shorter one down as they are both excellent for different reasons.
Is the road in tarred or dirt?

Good bitumen from Tenterfield. If you are travelling from Stanthorpe, there are a few km of good gravel. Watch out for roo's - there are heaps of them.
Can you climb up at sunset and get some night photos? Are you able to get up and down at night?

I see no reason why not - Take a torch or two so you can see in the dark

How long does this walk take if you take the scenic route both ways

Hi Marcus, we took our time to take lots of photos (with poses!!!) drink some water, chatted to another couple on the way back and stopped for some morning tea at the top. We took the easy walk both ways rather than climbing up the steep front (I'm not fit enough for that), it took us 3.5 hours, but please remember we went to enjoy the scenery of the area.
