Until we saw the road signs on our way to Penguin, we had never heard of Leven Canyon. My wife was brought up in a small village in Yorkshire called Leven so we felt that we should visit the Canyon while in the area. It was well worth the visit. We did the circular walk in the anti-clockwise direction, so that we went down the 700 steps. Initially, I was worried that my arthritic knees would not cope with the steps, but they were evenly spaced and easy to walk down. The views from the lookouts were magnificent, as they were on the route in and out. We spotted 4 echidna as we journeyed to the Canyon.

Devils Elbow needs signage at bridge, directing people right down onto rocks. Otherwise there can be confusion in following track.

A bit of a walk but view was worth it. had been years ago and still amazed by its raw beauty. There are 2 tracks to two diffent viewing areas. You can do a loop via lots of stairs.. we did not do! As I have some mobility issues we only did the Cruicshanks walk. It is a reasonable uphill walk with a bit of loose gravel. There are a couple of benches to rest at along the way. Not suitable for wheelchairs or major mobility problems. The track upto the toilets gives a bit of insight to the track to lookout.

Beautiful scenery. Easy walk up to the lookout. We weren't suitably equiped for a longer walk (I need a knee brace for waling long distances!) but will definitely be back to do it.
Good facilities if you want to stop and eat at the parking area.

About 40 minutes from Ulverstone, the drive to Leven Canyon is itself along pretty country roads with delightful scenery.
There is a good day use area at the Canyon, offerings picnic facilities and amenities. It is from here that a 1.2km return circuit takes you to viewpoints of the canyon itself. It is a beautiful forest walk and, if you go anti-clockwise, you provide a steep descent from one viewing area to another (as opposed to a steep ascent in the other direction): both spots are spectacular and should be visited. Stunning and complex geology in the canyon walls.
If you travel a further km along the road, a small parking area is located at a less well developed walkway to the bottom of the river, which is crossed by a bridge, with further walking down the canyon available to those who are keen to do so.
It is a 20-30 minute return walk down to the bridge where there are excellent views of the river: the water was up at the time of our visit and it was a powerful torrent flowing beneath the bridge.

This is wonderful day trip for those who like a challenge(the steep steps) and want a cheap day out. The Leven Canton is around half an hour from Ulverstone and once there you can have a picnic as there are picnic tables and toilets(a must). You can take dogs but they must be on a lead. The first look out is only 10-15 min walk but take a quick left turn and head down the steps(700) of them which loops to another lookout. There are bench's on the path with the steps if you need a breather. After taking in the 2nd lookout it all uphill back to the car park (free parking). There is another walk a short drive away that will take one down to the canyon floor. There is signage if you want to do this.

Reexploring my home state and was pleasantly surprised with the new tracks and viewing platforms and bridge now here. Cruickshanks lookout at the top of the gorge gave beautiful overall views including snow on Black Bluff. Walk down the 600+ steps to the next platform for mid height views and back up to the carpark & picnic grounds through beautiful man tree ferns. Enjoy a picnic and then head along Loongana Rd and walk down to the bridge that crosses the river. We drove up through Sprent and back down to Ulverstone via Preston - fabulous views of Mt Roland, Black Bluff and lush green country.

We walked to Cruickshank’s Lookout, a 10 minute walk. While this sounds easy, if you aren’t fit, be aware that it’s all uphill. The track is well surfaced and leads to a viewing platform overlooking the Leven Canyon. The view is breathtaking over wild rugged terrain with the Leven River far below. Equally stunning was the drive from Penguin via Gunn Plains onto Leven Canyon through vivid green farm pastures, rainforests and eucalyptus forests.

What a veiw....there are several walks you can do. Two different lookouts both worth doing. There is also a loop track, with combines the two, BUT on the loop track there are stairs, lots of stairs, lots of steep stairs about 1000, SO do the top lookout first if you are doing the loop track then you will be going down the steep stairs. There is a rail you can hold on to. We are in 50s and did it OK. Take your time so much to see in the forest, bright red, purple, blue fungi. Loved it.

I pondered if it was really worth driving the 40 minutes to visit the canyons but it was overcast so off we went. I’m glad we did because this place is beautiful. The loop walk that includes the two lookouts is stunning but be warned it is quite steep in parts and does require a degree of fitness. We also did the walk to canyon floor which was equally beautiful and equally steep.

Hi, I am planning to drive there myself from Devonport airport for the Leven Canyon viewing. I am leaving the airport at 3pm. Do I have enough time to visit this place and may be the wing wildlife park as well?

There are 2 places to view. One is relatively short walk up hill to a wonderful viewing platform with the return the same way. About half hour. You could walk down 600 steps then to lower platform and then a considerable walk back. The whole would take 1 to 1 half hours. The footbridge walk lower down is a hour return with steep path down.
The wildlife park closes about 4.
You need to allow time driving in Tasmania as places are only seemingly short distances but so much to see getting there. Roads are narrow and winding. Consider the time you are driving and remember the animals like to play dodgems with the cars towards dusk.

While dusk would be pretty, I do not think you will have enough time to do justice to the Canyon.
It is about an hours drive from Devonport, so would be your call
