‪Very peaceful land preserved within a busy city area. The signage was very informative about this site created by the Hopewell Indians. I wish there was more information but I believe it is only staffed on special occasions. We learned a lot and highly recommend.‬

‪This is part of a huge series of 2,000-year old earthworks that fully deserve World Heritage Site status. The museum is informative, but the Great Circle itself is highly impressive and inspirational. Ample parking is provided and the interpretive signage really provides a context for the experience.‬

‪A look back nearly 200 years into Native American history and culture. This is well worth a visit. The grounds are pristine.‬

‪Interesting place. We visited on a Sunday afternoon. There was a very friendly cat that greeted us and followed us as we walked part of the paved path. We were the only visitors. I would like to know what is in the mounds. Is it only dirt or are there artifacts in the mounds?‬

‪I would have liked to have been on a tour to better understand this amazing earth work. It is the largest earth work in the Western Hemisphere. There was a school group and the leader let us into the museum which gives you some understanding of the culture of the ancients. We saw the sign and got off the highway to go. Had I planned, I would have read up before going and I recommend that is what you do. I am glad we went. I am always astounded by the peoples and cultures who existed here before we white men.‬

‪The wife and I have been visiting mounds for the past month. We started in mid-September with the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collinsville, IL (near St Louis); then it was the Hopewell Mounds (3 sites) near Chillicothe, OH around the end of September and today it was the Newark Earthworks (2 sites) in Newark, OH. We started with Newark's Great Circle Earthworks which has a small Visitor's Center (limited hours starting in October). This site was originally developed by the Native Americans 1,200 to 1,500 years ago. In recent history, the site served as an encampment for soldiers during the Civil War and later served as the Licking County Fairgrounds. The site has been under the care of the Ohio History Connection since 1933.

Some of the earthworks are 14' tall and there is still evidence of moats and other earthworks. The site itself is open during daylight hours and you're free to tour the site at your leisure. At certain times of the year (days of the week), there are guided tours but there were no tours the day of our visit so we did the self-guided thing. There are signs around the site that help explain and help you understand what you're seeing.

The remaining earthworks and moats are quite impressive. You should allow about 1 hour at this site.

A few miles away are the Octagon Earthworks which are on the site of the Moundbuilder's Country Club. There is a small area that is open to the public 365 days a year and an observation stand that gives you a glimpse into the site. The site itself is only open to the public 4 times a year (4 Open Houses). Check the Ohio History Connection's website for the dates of the 2020 Open Houses. October 13th was the last open house at this site for 2019.‬

‪This great circle was on our list of mounds to visit. The museum was closed but we enjoyed a pleasant walk. Unfortunately, with all the various ways the circle has been used by the military and as a fair ground the earth energy in the circle is minuscule. ‬

‪We knew the museum wouldn’t be open till noon, but we stopped earlier in the day while we were passing through. Very impressive, with some signs put up to try to educate visitors. I kind of liked this place better than the serpent mound.‬

‪We went to Newark specifically to see the Great Field mound. We also went into.the museum which had interesting facts and timelines for the Hopewell tribe. It's fascinating to see the huge scope of all the mounds (most no longer exist), they stretched over several acres. We were lucky enough to also find the Octagon Mound. It's actually preserved as a part the Newark Country Club golf course! The Club built a viewing stand which gives fantastic perspectives of the Octogan, another Circle, and some burial mounds. It's amazing to think how these were built without modern conveniences and machines.‬
