I went to Penitentiary Glenn Reservation in Mid-November for a good walk. This is one of my favorite parks and I used to volunteer here. There are many well maintained trails here, but I had never hiked the entire Rabbit Run Loop Trail…what a great hike. This trail is mostly unimproved, has two creek crossings, and takes you into nooks and crannies of the park the other trails miss. Good footwear is a must. My walk was just at 3 miles from the parking lot with a fair amount of up and down. Highly recommend.

This park, like many other Lake County Parks, has allot to offer. From easy and short walks to more strenuous hiking trails. In addition they have a very nice nature exhibit where many of the animals are permanent residents due to injuries or imprinting. Their inside exhibits are also very nice, however due to the pandemic, are closed temporarily.
There is also a train (which I think is also closed at the moment) and a climbing train consisting of recycled material. A children's area where one can dig, crawl (not for the weak of knees), climb rounds out this park. Plenty of picnic tables and a fair number of benches are scattered throughout the center.
The park hosts a variety of events (however many have been canceled) which after this crisis should reappear. A great place to spend an hour or a day.
NOTE: Unlike some parks, not all trails are circular.

I have been walking this park a couple times a week for a year now. It is beautiful, diverse, has history and is maintained very well.
There are easy and difficult trails to navigate and you can go 3 miles in a loop without repeating a path. The Gorge is the site everyone wants to see. Two ways to get to the bottom. There are stairs from the Gorge trail and the Rabbit Run trail takes you to the bottom via natural trails. This trail is harder to navigate and requires a 2 mile + walk, so beware. Gorgeous forest, meadows, a swamp, a marsh with long pier. much to see. Many trails are improved with packed stone and leveled. Some trails closer to the buildings are paved asphalt.
There is wildlife on display year around, Fox, various birds, an Eagle and more.
Kids park and train. Check it out!

So it's a nice day and you'd like to visit a park... but which one? If you're looking for a park in Lake County that has something for everyone.... Penitentiary Glen is it. Depending upon the season you can hike, snowshoe, have a picnic, or even camp! There is a very nice Nature Center with a display area about local wildlife, including an indoor viewing area for watching birds (and chipmunks!) at their feeders. You can shop at The Nature Store, take a walk on paved trails (or unpaved ones), and the children can play in Nature Play (open seasonally). The staffed desk in the Nature Center can give you much more information, including schedules of Lake Metroparks programs as well as the Lake Shore Live Steamers, an independent group that runs miniature trains around tracks within the park! Check our their website for current details.

My wife and I will do the bridle trail (~3miles) on a nice day. The variety of the hike is what makes it so nice. It starts at the gorge, then hiking down to the creek, then back up the other side to a slow grade that approaches the meadow. Back into the woods, you return to the top side of the nature center. So many options for a nice few hours with nature. The beehive is really cool, as is the plethora of birdfeeders from the indoor observation area.

Yes, Nature Play is most likely closed (ice and snow don't allow for it to be open), but there is plenty to do when winter weather is here! Stop in the Nature Center to visit the indoor exhibits and gift shop. Check at the desk for available programs and winter opportunities. If you walk the boardwalk, you can look down into the gorge -- a much clearer view than when the trees are full of leaves. Several of the trails are flat and easily navigated by families with younger children. If you're a hiker, all of the trails are still available and will provide a good workout.

A wonderful visitor’s center, hiking trails, lots of things for kids and adults, Penitentiary Glen is an usual and memorable park. It is definitely a good weather place; however, even on less than ideal days, there’s enough to experience in the visitor’s center that it’s worth a stop.

The camp site is only a short walk from the parking lot.
Amenities include a fire ring, picnic table, BBQ grill, and plenty of free firewood on site. Hammock campers will find great tree choices, and tent campers have at least a half dozen good spots to pitch.
Restrooms are not on site, but are designated on the provided map.

I had never been to a park like this one; my husband and I visited with our son-in-law and 2 1/2 year old granddaughter. She had a blast! The play area is all "natural" - logs and stumps and things on which to climb, which she loved. Then we found the big sand lot, complete with running water. Fortunately it was a hot day, as she was soaked by the time we left, but so much fun! Will definitely return on our next visit to Cleveland.
