‪I enjoy Fort Gibson every time I stop by when I'm in the area. Great place to learn about history that occurred in Indian Territory and the early military presence in what is present day Oklahoma. Fort Gibson was established in 1824 to keep the peace between the Osage and Cherokee tribes.

I learned about noteworthy American soldiers stationed at (or at least visiting) Fort Gibson include Robert E. Lee, future President Zachary Taylor and the Army stationed Jefferson Davis, who would go on to become the president of the Confederate States of America. At the height of Indian removal in the 1830s, the garrison at Fort Gibson ranked as the largest in the nation.

The fort was abandoned in 1857 and revived during the Civil War. The name was changed to Fort Blunt where it became the Union headquarter in Indain Indian Territory. The army stayed through the Reconstruction and Indian Wars periods, combating the problem of wild outlaws and property squatters.

Historic buildings along with the replica items truly depict how difficult life was in the area. I can imagine the harsh conditions soldiers endured during their time at Fort Gibson. It was interesting to see the spot where the first long distance commercial phone line in Oklahoma was installed.

I like they are in the process of restoring the former hospital building. I are able to take many neat pictures at the fort and nice little gift shop inside the entrance area at the commissary building..‬

‪Nice setup and the people are really nice. What made me unhappy is that after paying $14 to get in and wearing a mask the entire time, I wasn’t allowed to buy a magnet because ‘there was not way to sanitize it’. I’m 45 years old. If I want to gamble my life for a magnet I can wipe down in my car, that’s my right. Left after that without seeing anything else. ‬

‪We stopped by here on the way from Checotah to Tahlequah and it was well worth it! Mr Reed in the visitor center was a wealth of knowledge and had so many little tidbits of history of the area too! There was another gentleman inside the fort that met with us and spoke with us about the history but I failed to get his name however he was a wealth of info too! It was definitely worth the stop!!‬

‪The Fort was a stop on one of our antique car tours. Our group likes to preserve history so the Fort was something we could relate to. Our guide was very enthusiastic about the Fort, the area, and its history. He was well versed on any topic we brought up. We enjoyed a short film about this part of Oklahoma and then visited the various buildings relating to the Fort.‬

‪I may be a bit biased because my great uncle, Judge Claude Garrett, used to own one of the officers' homes at Fort Gibson and the House of History, but I returned to this site after at least 20 years' absence and was quite pleased at the progress of improving the site and also the passion with which the staff share the history of this significant place in the early to mid–19th century.
It is rare in Arkansas or Oklahoma or Missouri to find anything resembling the once essential military forts that guarded the frontiers and kept order in the 19th century. At the Fort Gibson site there is a small interpretive center, as well as a large number of surviving buildings and stockade, which can all be toured. The admission price is $7.00 per adult. This is a very important site that desperately needs public support and interest to keep going and improving its presentation of major events (including during the Civil War) which took place at the fort.
While the roadways and the visitor center are not as expansive or fancy as those of Pea Ridge or Prairie Grove just across in Arkansas, Fort Gibson is well-worth your time and is a good place for children.‬

‪Don't waste your time on this one. $7 per person fee to see not much of anything. There is a 15 minute video shown in a musty, old building that reeks of mildew. Not even the numerous Glade air fresheners could cover up the mildew/mold smells. Got a severe headache withing 5 minutes of being in the Visitors Center. They said the first floor of the west building was open to the public. Tried to visit and it was locked. The man at the main fort area was less than hospitable. He probably should go into another line of work and stay away from the tourism/welcoming area. Overall, just a bad experience with the people. The fort is, well, not that interesting. If you've seen one bunk room, you've seen all of them as they are mostly the same. A drive by is all you need on this one.‬

‪Lot’s of history here, not only of Oklahoma, but the whole region. Many notable historical figures were associated with this fort. Sam Houston, Jefferson Davis, Washington Irving, and many future Civil War generals all spent time here. The old Stockade reconstruction and many of the outbuildings have been renovated. The hospital building in undergoing it now. There is a small museum. There are several events and reinactments throughout the year. Large grounds to explore. Bring a picnic lunch. Three Rivers Museum, and the Batfish Submarine/ War Memorial Park are located just across the Arkansas River,in Muskogee. It’s a full day if you hit all three.‬
