‪Very historical landmark.

While Geronimo may be the most widely known Indian of the past, it was Quanah Parker who did more for not only his people, the Comanches, but other Indian Nations once he surrendered and lived in the Lawton area.

He became friends with "Burk" Burnett, who was a very successful cattle rancher in Texas, and it was Burnett who helped build the Star House that Quanah Parker, some of his wives and many of his children lived.

The house was relocated from an area that Fort Sill assumed and moved to Eagle Park in Cache, Oklahoma where it is rotting away due to the stubborness of owner to sell the house to the Comanche Nation or the Oklahoma Historical Society. While the Star House is designated a national landmark, as long as it sits on private property and owned by this individual - nothing can be done.

As for Quanah Parker, his mother was a white girl of nine years old and captured by a Comanche Indian raid in Texas. She was then raised as one of the Comanches and eventually married Chief Nocona, Quanah Parker's father.

Quanah Parker was in the ceremony of Theodore Roosevelt in Washington D.C. and the two became friends. Roosevelt visited the Lawton area and hunted along with Quanah Parker. In their conversations, much was hoped for by Parker to designate an area where the bison and other animals could run free. Roosevelt had much to do with designating the area that became the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and having bison and elk brought to that area.

Quanah Parker did a lot of good things after his surrender at Fort Sill in 1875 and was well respected not only by the Indian Nations here, but also by the U.S. Government, military and white community.

There is a lot of debate as to when he was born and reading different books shows different birth years of 1845, 1850 and even 1852. On his gravestone, located in the Old Post Cemetery of Fort Sill, his year of birth is listed as 1852. When visiting this site, his mother Cynthia Ann Parker's grave is to the right of his and Quanah's sister Prairie Flower is next to that.

There is much written about this man, but you have to use collective information to sometimes gain the truth about him (his birth year being one example).

As a note and as of June 2021, to see the gravesite on Fort Sill, you'll need to get a visitor pass from the Visitor Center on Sheridan Road just prior to entering the post.‬

‪Was at the Artillery museum and decided to stop by. The grave site is in Ft. Sill Cemetery and is easy to find as it is the only one with a tall pillar type marker. Interesting to see but even more interesting to see the other graves as well.‬

‪First cemetery you see upon driving into the fort. Quanah Parker's mom (Cynthia Ann Parker and his sister Prairie Flower Parker) are buried beside him. Their stones all match which is a sweet touch.
This cemetery is well maintained (of course, it's on a base) and the stones are right by the road so it's easily accessible.‬

‪Hard to find, but the cemetery site is peaceful and interesting. Worth the drive, if you can get on base. ‬

‪Quanah Parker was a great leader among the Comanche people. His story is the stuff that legends are made of.

On Fort Sill, he is buried alongside his mother, Cynthia Ann Parker, and his sister, Prairie Flower. It is a beautiful monument among the thousands buried in this sacred place. The inscription reads "Here Until Day Break And Shadows Fall And Darkness Disappears Is Quanah Parker Chief Of The Comanches Born - 1852 Died Feb 23, 1911.

This Monument Erected Under Act Of Congress. Approved June 23, 1920"

There are also other notable Native leaders buried on the knoll, many of whom were signers of the Medicine Lodge Treat of 1867. Chief Santana of the Kiowas is one of them.

Once again, this is not something I would plan a trip around, but if you are in the area and have an appreciation for history, especially as it relates to Native people, this is a moving place to visit.

In order to see the grave, you will enter Fort Sill, so you need to be prepared to provide ID.‬
