‪I was very excited to visit this place after seeing a huge exhibit at the Western Heritage Museum. I thought there would be lots of additional artifacts. Unfortunately, they had almost no actual artifacts...almost everything in the exhibit was a replica. Even the Craig mound was rebuilt to look like the original (the other mounds are real). Having said that, the facility is very nice and everything is well-presented. Be sure to watch the introductory slide show. Also the fellow running the place is very knowledgeable and very helpful. He told us a lot about the peoples here and answered all our questions. The trails out to the mounds are mostly paved, and we enjoyed the self-guiding tour, with signs along the way. Overall, we enjoyed our visit.‬

‪We were at Lake Wister and looked at things to do in the area on Trip Advisor and found Spiro Mounds. Many of the previous reviews stated they couldn’t read the signs along the trail. They must have been replaced because they are quite clear. Learned the history of the mounds and enjoyed reading about the artifacts. The 2 mile trail is all asphalt and handicap accessible.
Nice walk and history lesson. ‬

‪It was a cold and blustery day with some rain the day we visited, which limited the time we spent outside, so most of these comments refer to the visitor centre. There are some interesting exhibits, but given the afore-mentioned weather it seemed a little odd that the representations of the inhabitants had them almost naked (especially the women) which seemed unlikely and unnecessarily voyeuristic, reminiscent of the out-dated attitudes of National Geographic years ago. The warden we spoke to was certainly opinionated, and on topics other than his expertise which he should learn to leave out of his presentations, but I am afraid I was not convinced of the veracity of everything that he said. Certainly worth a slight detour, and most people's knowledge of the earlier inhabitants of the area is sadly lacking, but take what you see and hear and with a pinch of salt. ‬

‪We visited the mounds for the birthday bash and they were great. We like to hike so the trails were fun, clean and mowed. Several people demonstrating arrowhead making, bead work, and letting people try it. There are replicas showing how the village was constructed and they are very cool to imagine how the mound people lived. I loved it, staff was very kind and helpful.‬

‪This is a fabulous archeological site. The director (sole employee) is incredibly knowledgeable. We have been to Spiro numerous times visiting family. So glad we took the time to stop. It is unfortunate that the state doesn't throw more money at this location. Outdoor signs need new plexiglass. I did not mind that so much of the exhibit was replicated. If I lived here I would volunteer. It would be amazing if local native Americans could pitch in and make this a cultural destination. Perhaps a tribe or individuals could at least participate during solstice and equnox periods. I highly recommend stopping here!‬

‪This is an interesting site. My husband likes mounds, so we stopped. The museum is nice, but as others have said, a lot of the artifacts are replicas. There's a short film. Some of the relics under glass needed to be cleaned out - dead ladybugs!
Outside, the trail is beautiful. Lots of birds singing & the walk was pleasant. The mounds are interesting, but the information boards are almost impossible to read because they're weather worn. The trail is paved in the main areas, so it's accessible.
I agree with other reviewers this place needs an infusion of money to spiff it up. Also, better advertising.‬

‪This is probably one of the most under-reviewed sites I've visited. Although this center is greatly underfunded, outdated, and in need of repair, the information about the Spiro culture is fabulous. The state needs to get busy!!! The kids were entertained by the under glass pieces, the mortars they used to grind corn, and the building replica. The 15 minute slide presentation is very dated, but it provided valuable information on this prominent culture. We did not complete the entire 2 mile trail around the site, but the 1/2 mile loop we walked was interesting. You need good walking shoes, light clothing, and water if you're going.‬

‪Beautiful archelogical area where the Indians camped on their journeys by the Arkansas River. They have discovered lots of dishes and tools where they stayed. Mounds where they camped. ‬
