...it is one of the most incredible displays of natural formations I have seen in my life. The instructions are correct as written.

No signs, poor directions on line. Ended up on a couple of gravel/dirt roads for miles before finally giving up. But it is somewhere near Lake Billy Chinook and that is beautiful.

It's kind of a fun outing for families with children. They are pretty amazed at the different formations and if they're older they might want to do some exploring. A lot of photo ops as well.

Amazing site. I think there must be a different content to the makeup of the stone formations as they wear in different way.
Yes, they are balanced! and yes, there is a minisule parking area nearby. Just a short path for a walk, and you can see many (maybe 20?) balanced rocks. It is an incredible sight.
We were at Lake Billy Chinook and decided to drive out the Metolius arm and come around that way, into Sisters and back to Bend.
This is not an activity to do on your own in winter.....I think the road might be closed.

The Balancing Rocks actually reside along the Metolius arm of Lake Billy Chinook. You can get there as described below, but we always have gone through Culver and around the lake and crossing over the Crooked and Deschutes river arms towards Perry South Campground. The rocks are very fragile, so this place isn't overly advertised for fear that individual's will destroy this natural wonder. In recent years (2005) the area has been built up and now there is a small parking area and short trail along the top for viewing. The balancing rocks are the hardened capstones of an ancient lava flow. As the softer material erodes beneath the rocks, pillars that support them grow up to 10 feet in height.

My husband and I were going out to specifically photograph the rocks. The rock formations are amazing to see. There wasn't much of a trail really you could walk around the rocks in a matter of minutes. It is a long drive out there but if you tie it in with another adventure it would be a better use of your time. The trail is not paved and not good for people who have trouble with their balance (no pun intended).

I had heard about this place years ago, but it took me a while to find it . . . . from Hwy 20 west of Sisters, take the Indian Fort exit going north. Follow Road 11 for about 12 miles, it goes from a paved road to gravel, its a good road, you will come to a cross roads, make a right on NF1170, follow this road until in dead ends into
Montgomery Road, turn left , in 100 yards you will find a pull off on the right . . . walk the trail to the balancing rocks !

Is it lots of walking or is there an overlook we can drive to.
Im so confused, between this posting and several commenters, I cannot figure out if this is in bend, sisters, culver, or on lake billy chinook. Those things are two hours apart, so I can't even narrow it down. Goole maps is clueless.

Did you get your answer? This is not in Bend. It’s located at lake billy chinook near Perry south Camp ground.

How long is the trail, is it steep?

The trail to the rocks is a short trail and it is only steep if you want to get up close with the rocks. You can stand from above and see all the rocks. We didn't explore to see if there was a trail from the lower portion because of an ankle injury.
