What an interesting museum!!! This place is loaded with history and I believe some haunted items as well. I feel this would be an awesome trip for families and couples as well. The attendant was very nice. (sorry I forgot your name). Many items are donated and you can tell that all of the things inside are truly authentic. John Day is a very small town and the preservation of these items are to be admired.
Some of the sculpted mannequins are quite interesting. Believe it or not… The eyes look as though they are following you. I am not kidding!. If you are a history person or would like to see some interesting things. I encourage you to travel out and experience Grant County.

Wife and I visited on a hot afternoon. The museum is a great way to understand the history and the people of this area. They have a very large diversity of items. Rock collections, farming tools, clocks, cowboy artifacts, gaming, kitchen, laundry, military, ranching to name a few. I found the preserved dresses and clothes really interesting. Lady tending to place was very helpful. Her great uncles picture and his wife's are proudly displayed. A lot of effort went into establishing this gem.

We stopped at the museum hoping to find information on a business my husband's parents owned in John Day. The sweet lady working there made some phone calls and checked her files. She went above and beyond you help us. The museum was well displayed with like items grouped together. There was LOTS to see. We thoroughly enjoyed walking around and looking at everything. There were a few interactive displays that you could touch. All in all it was an interesting stop.

This is a great place! Funky museum loaded with all sorts of quirky stuff and local history. Photos, collections, knickknacks, even the skulls of the 2nd and 3rd men hung in the county...There is something interesting for everyone. We have stopped there several times. It is hard to take it all in during a single visit. Stop for one hour or stop for many. You are sure to enjoy!

We liked the museum and it is worth looking at but we really liked the little town it is in Canyon city, there is a neat little old church a few neat building a cute park, public restrooms, There are homes with neat vegetation and right out the back of the museum is a house painted with a mural to look like a cottage very cute we walked around for about an hour and really enjoyed this small place.

It doesn't seem like much from the outside - go inside. It's huge. Great history of the area - large collection of antiques, guns, indian artifacts. We learned a lot here. highly recommend spending an hour of your day here.

I lived in Canyon City as a child & was totally freaked out by this Museum. I visted in 2014 & it still smelled the same, looked the same & had the same exhibits that freaked me out. I Loved That! Brought back great memories & made me laugh at what I was afraid of all the homemade mannequins (still kind of creeped me out). Great, interesting, strange & funny local history. The lady working was as sweet as ever & even remembered me from so many years ago in the 80's. I feel lucky that I got to live part of my childhood in these fun small towns Canyon City & Johnday Oregon.

I enjoyed this museum because it really gave me a true feeling about the pioneers who settled in the area in the mid 1800's. Be sure to pick up the stapled papers that describe the people in the many portraits hanging throughout the museum. Motion detectors turn lights on in the smaller rooms, not to be missed, full of artifacts and collections depicting how these pioneers lived and worked. Someone interested in history, fossils, old newspapers, letters.... could easily spend a long time going through the museum. This is not a museum for toddlers. There are too many things to touch and some of the life size mannequins might be scary.

I happened to notice a sign on the left side of Hwy 395 while riding my touring motorcycle southbound out of the town of John Day. Curiousity got the best of me, so I turned around and parked in front of what appeared to be a museum. There was a small fee to see the museum. OMG ! What a Museum ! It has everything imaginable relating to the town's earlier times in history. I would estimate that there are approximately 400 items on desplay: Old medical equipment; early typewriters; early clothing; early sewing machines; early telephone exchange equipment; early office equipment...almost too many items to mention here. Everything is in good condition. The displays are a view into the past of this town. This is one of the most interesting museums I've visited in probably 20 years. I don't believe they could have squeezed anything more into the three rooms of that museum. This is one place you have to stop and see if passing through the Oregon town of John Day. I'd give it a 6 Star Rating if that were possible!
