‪Portland’s maritime past ‬
زوجان • مارس 2020
‪If you are interested in maritime history you should visit the tug Portland, which houses a museum dedicated to Portland’s maritime past. This vessel operated from 1947-1981 and is the last stern-wheel tugboat left in the United States. You can visit the bridge and the engine room, which makes you really appreciate the men who operated this vessel, as operating a steam plant and navigating a river tied up to another vessel are no easy feats. The museum vessel is currently manned and operated by volunteers who are happy to share their knowledge of and enthusiasm for this vessel.‬

‪Interesting and Fun‬
ديسمبر 2019
‪This was fun and fascinating. We had no idea what to expect, but the weather was lousy so an inside event made sense.

Everything about it was informative and enjoyable. The boat is 200-some feet long and the engine room has to be 150. The amount of pipes and pumps and whatever required to jam steam into two pistons, that each aren't much bigger than a tall thin hot water heater ,that will propel the boat up to 12 knots is remarkable. And the tour shows all of it.

Our guide was knowledgeable and pleasant, and there was a lot more history about this boat and predecessors in the Portland area than we had time for. It would have been enjoyable to spend more time in the museum part of the boat, but we arrived too late in the day.

Highly recommended.‬

‪An intersting view of Portland and it's history. The Waterfront around the museum also has a great trail and a monument to sailors that served on the USS Oregon.‬

‪River cruise on a historic stern wheeler‬
سبتمبر 2019
‪Each summer the Maritime Museum 'fires up' the boilers and offers a four hour fund raising cruise down the Willamette River and back. We try to make this trip each summer. The volunteers who crew and operate the ship are marvelous, the adventure is both relaxing and educational (how many chances do you get to stand in the engine room and watch the steal engine operate the Pittman Arm?) plus, snacks and lunch into the bargain. This is a 'not to be missed' experience if you like boats and engines and rivers...‬

‪Cruising the Willamette on SS PORTLAND‬
زوجان • يوليو 2019
‪We picked perfect weather. Lots of great volunteers operate and maintain this Oregon treasure.
Un-expected breakfast treats and lunch from Grand Central bakery was icing on cake.
Amazingly quiet! I imagined plenty of racket during engine room tour...not at all. Tour of pilot house underway also was quite educational... All the while with ex-Port of Portland manager BobH providing commentary of what we saw while underway.
Great adventure for young or old.‬

‪A trip back in history‬
يوليو 2019
‪We had a tour of the old shop and museum that lasted about an hour. The tour guide made it a fascinating time comparing his time in the service and what the old ship could do. ‬

‪All Aboard!‬
زوجان • مايو 2019
‪Visit this nice little attraction on the water front of the river next to downtown Portland for something different. It is really worth the visit and gives you a good glimpse into the history of Oregon's riverboat days.

This is a good activity to do just about any time, but we went first thing when they opened and got our own private tour by one of the very knowledgeable docents. He really went into great detail about all aspects of the boat, the things that happened back in the day and current facts as it was related to why they were there and how they existed.

It won't take up much of your time, but will fill an hour or more. This attraction is great for both adults and kids of all ages.

Don't forget to ask for AAA discount if you are a card member.‬

‪Volunteer-run, but still a charming ride.‬
زوجان • سبتمبر 2018
‪The museum normally sits at the dock all year, but 4 times a year they take it out for a spin down the Willamette. They just got their "boat License" (Summer 2018) so they may "blow out the carbons" more frequently now.
We took the Saturday Lunch excursion. They fed us an ample box lunch from The Bomber Catering Co. (Roast Beef, Veggie, Ham, or Turkey). They left on time, warning us beforehand not to be late or they'd leave without us. There was some confusion as to how close you could get to the paddlewheel upon take-off and landing. The Operations chief said it was okay, but the volunteers shooed us away from the exciting part. You can see lots of nice sights along the way. Cost was $88. But, the bang for your buck are the stories by the other passengers. Old shipmen, family members, volunteers, dock workers. Yes, there is a museum inside. It is the whole boat. Tours all day in the upper and lower decks. They are short, and have several of them throughout the whole ride. Depending on who's in charge that day and throughout the journey, tours are organized either by your last name or by what group you signed up with upon arrival. A, B, C, D, or AA, BB, CC, DD etc according to which tour it is. There are only two. BTW: The Texas Deck is the middle deck where all passengers gather for the safety lecture and announcements. Remember not to leave things like plates, napkins, soda cans on your chair because a gust of wind can knock it all into the river. I wondered where my plate went.
I have not been on the Sternwheeler-- a competitor ride by the Portland Spirit company. This floating museum, the Portland, is a Steam paddlewheel. There is a big wooden dial on the front that lets far off viewers know which way the rudder is pointing. Keep your ears and eyes open for the best time.‬

‪Small Museum on the river‬
يوليو 2018
‪Walked up to find the unexpected museum on the river front. Down the ramp to find one of the few steam powered stern wheel ships still operational. The guided tour was best for those over the age of 8. Although as an engineer the workings of the boiler and piston system was interesting. ‬

‪Very interesting and well presented ship museum‬
بمفردك • أبريل 2018
‪The Portland has always been something of an anachronism - a steam-powered paddlewheel tugboat built in the late 1940s to wrangle commercial ships at the Port of Portland that served in that role into the 1980s. She has a steel hull, but otherwise would have been right at home a century or more earlier. She has been preserved in working order as a museum and regularly goes on cruises down the river and back.

Sadly we missed the opportunity for a cruise on our recent visit, but still had a great time looking at the historical exhibits of Portland and Oregon maritime history and especially on the docent-guided tour from pilot house to engine room and just about everywhere in between.

The staff were very friendly, and we had a great time swapping sea stories with them. There's even a little gift shop where you can buy various trinkets, clothing, etc. as well as some interesting books on the regions maritime history. Overall, you can easily spend over an hour here (the tour itself last 40 minutes or so) - don't forget to visit the USS Oregon main mast in the adjacent park as well...‬
