I have been following Kellie Caron since I came across her youtube videos showing her great danes, bobcat and daughter playing together. (early 2008'ish). I believe at the time, she was one of the few breeders with lynxes. On exotic animal husbandry, through youtube, twitter, yahoo groups and other caretakers (such as Pua's owner) - information was shared, and she gave us a glimpse into how to care for delicate keepers, and also the types of animals she was dedicating herself too (cats, birds, monkeys, dogs/wolves, etc). I am really sad to see her efforts went down the tube thanks to jealous internet trolls. She's a perfect example of why so many people who have exotic animals stay clear of social media, publicity and the general public.
I just saw the news that her pets/some of her animals have been taken and she has my sympathies. This women has put time, money and round-the-clock effort. I wish her family the best of luck, I hope you get back all your babies, and sadly (because I never reached out directly, and I won't get the treat of your videos, posts, tidbits and pictures), I hope you'll keep your privacy with your next rebound.

While it was very cool to see them, you won’t get what you paid for. They wouldn’t open the gate after we rang. The lady when we arrived was rude and gave us bad directions to park our car. We had to stay in our car till they got us. She gave us literally a 1 minute briefing about what we could and couldn’t do. There was no educational portion liked promised, and we were rushed. I think the 6 adults who were in the room were there for less than 3 minutes. She got mad because I took a video but never said we couldn’t do that. Just a waste of money and kind of a sad environment. Not for research at all. They just lie about what you’ll get. So save your money. They won’t refund it.

I planned this as a surprise for my daughter's birthday and it did not disappoint! Yes, there are rules, but they are in place for a reason...we were happy to follow them. Tessa did a phenomenal job showing us how to feed and pet the sloths, then gave us a thorough education on the sloth and everything about them. She was so knowledgeable; you could tell she genuinely cared about each one of them. The sloths were so sweet and adorable; I even loved being there. My daughter claimed it was one of the best days of her life!! It's worth the trip and cost!!!

I am overwhelmed by the work this sanctuary does and feel very grateful I was able to visit. My visit was very relaxed, I felt very welcome and Tess was a wealth of knowledge. The sloths were wonderful and enjoyed eating from my hand.... as long as visitors respect the sanctuary and understand it is their home and not a zoo (thank goodness) I would highly recommend this. Although the fees may be high, I'm sure it is very little in comparison to the cost of upkeep. I was only too pleased to pay the price of admission. Thank you Tess and Tess's mom, for doing an incredible service

I am an unapologetic sloth addict. I am a fully functional 54-year-old man, but I am totally in love with sloths. They are my “anti-spirit animal?!” I love they are adorable slowness, their inexplicable ability to exist despite having really no “life skills,” and the fact that they can barely exist in captivity. My dream has always been to be around sloths in this “sloth center“ did not disappoint. We had exactly 1 hour to be near them. Our guide was very instructive. We Got to pet them. Take innumerable pictures. And, all in all, get a great opportunity to hang out with these phenomenal creatures.
They seemed well cared for. They didn’t seem unhappy – – although I’m not sure what an unhappy sloth looks like. Actually love the experience. It was my delayed Christmas present and it really fulfilled my dreams.
(Now for the weird part: this place is nutty about rules. I totally understand their rules about sloth safety. Anyone visiting the center has to have a little bit of a screw loose in terms of their love of sloths and would be willing to do anything to just be near them. They are overly vigilant to the point of absurd. They give you an exact five minute window in which to appear at the gate. Seriously, they break it down to this specific five-minute interval. You are told to “wait at the gate“ and someone will get you. Then you are instructed exactly where to park and told “do not get out of your car.” Our purple-haired guide was extremely explicit about everything we did: from how we washed our hands, to where we specifically were allowed to walk, to the exact amount of time we could spend with the sloths, to... literally everything! Seriously, we had time warnings down to the one minute mark. She told us that she was going to let us have as much time as we want and didn’t want to bother us with details: but it would’ve been nice to learn a few things about the sloths. However, she did seem to be catching up with her Facebook and Instagram.)
If you are a sloth nut like me, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Probably the best you could have outside of Costa Rica. And it is pretty cool to do it in the Northwest. However, the center really needs to lighten up a little bit. We are a captive audience. We understand the importance of integrity in terms of the animals. But can we just have a little bit of fun?

To go here and live amongst the sweetest creatures for a whole night was well worth my time, the money and the 5 1/2 hour flight it took me to get there and back. The staff/handlers are true animal lovers and have true respect for them. I had a ton of questions about sloths and their way of life and was able to get an answer for each of my questions. The sloths are adorable and love their cucumbers. It was fun to feed then the treats, but it was even more fun when the sloths would get your attention because they wanted treats. I didn't want my time to end because I knew I would miss the sloths when I left there, and I do miss them. I think it was such a great experience and would recommend it. Another fabulous treat was to participate in the meet and greet afterwards. To see all the additional exotic animals, pet them, hold them and feed them treats was super cool too. They were beautiful animals and nice to learn about. The habitat is very clean and pretty much odor free. I wouldn't trade my time there for anything.

This is an exploitative environment for these animals. Sloths are not for our entertainment and should not be sold illegally.

First and foremost: This is not a petting zoo. You cannot pet the sloths just anywhere and anytime (and there are very good reasons for this). This site is also not wheelchair accessible.
This is a PRIVATE property. The website is VERY clear about what you do and don't get as part of your experience. If you expect to handle wildlife this is not the interaction you're looking for.
We had the 40 minute Sloth Encounter, and while expensive (and I understand the reason for this) it was well worth it. A little bit of patience, quiet voices, and no scented products, and the sloths will come and investigate you quite happily.
You will get to feed the sloths some treats, stroke their backs, and let them sniff you. They may reach out and touch you as well. They all seemed very content and healthy.
You will NOT be allowed to roam the property at will, which is completely understandable given the sensitive nature of some of the species.
Some reviewers have commented that they were "treated like children"...my assessment is that the site owners have had plenty of experience of people *acting* like children.

We did the sloth feeding. What a great experience. Allie was a great guide. The sloths are well taken care of and are amazing animals. We went in winter and didn't find it that hot. I also didn't think it smelled. They keep it really clean. It was so much fun. Just listen to instructions don't be loud around sloths and respect their house.

What a fun day! This conservatory is fascinating. Not only do they have 300+ sloths onsite, with 4 separate enclosures that have people friendly sloths you get to interact with, but they have Howler Monkeys and Lemurs too. The woman who started the conservatory 27 years ago, is a hoot, and just as fascinating. She has many stories about the data she began collecting in the 80s to help better understand sloths and how to care for them. Remember, you aren't there to hold the sloths and treat them like some every day pet. You get to interact with the sloths as they come to you. We also had a chance to interact with a Lemur.
We had a wonderful time, and are considering booking an overnight stay at some point---maybe, it's a big difference in price to stay over night.

Why is there a sloth centre in Oregon? Surely if you are a genuine conservation centre you would set up in their natural habitat

Over The Last 5 Years sloth have become popular and the public demand has brought them stateside.
Sadly with overnight popularity often comes a lack of Education in appropriate care. Normally we take in 6 sloths per year stateside in 2017 we took in 6 just in the month of October. If you will look at our website our focus is specifically aimed at captive conservation and husbandry. So why not Oregon? Why not Florida? Texas? New York?

I am planning a trip for a sleep over and can't wait, but someone mentioned something to me about things to worry about such as fleas, bedbugs and roaches. Is there a problem with those kind of things there. There are so many wonderful reviews and I want my experience to be that good. Thanks for any information regarding my concerns.

We have only had a day trip there, so we didn't sleep on the mattresses, but I would take those comments with a grain of salt. Especially when they sound like a bitter rant. It's very apparent that the owners take good care of their grounds and exhibit areas. We have a farm, and I know how messy animals can get--- when I say they keep a clean space for the animals, I mean it. They maintain their dwellings week. We didn't leave with any negative experiences and highly enjoyed our time there.

During a day time visit would sloths be the only animals you would interact with or are there other programs with other animals?
SlothCenter
Rainier, Oregon, United States
Due to federal regulations, only the sloths are used with the public.
can you hold the sloths or just pet them?
SlothCenter
Rainier, Oregon, United States
We no longer allow holding of our sloths. We determined that they are just too delicate of a species to tolerate being THAT close to strangers.
