sehr schöne Gegend. Wir haben es sehr genoßen. Man sieht ewig lang kein Auto. Eine unberührte Natur in Oregon. Empfehlenswert.

Loved this drive through forests and mountains. Such a pretty area of the country. We did drive through sections that had been burned in last years forest fires, and those sights made us sad. We saw both deer and elk, and many birds.

Between Diamond Lake and Roseburg is a long stretch of Route 138, perhaps 80 miles or so. Most of this area is in the Umpqua National Forest. It is heavily forested, with many views of creeks and the Northern Umpqua River. Also, lots of waterfalls! We saw Toketee and Clearwaters Falls, and stopped at the Steamboat Inn for lunch. A wonderful scenic drive!

We delighted in this visit, albeit a fast one. The drive through the area along the Umpqua River was magnificent. It’s like a slice of heaven. I loved the road signs marking the way and numerous stops to soak in Forest bathing.

We were traveling on State Highway 138 heading to Roseburg. Along the way we stopped at several falls that were near the highway. The first was Clearwater Falls adjacent to the Clearwater Falls Campground. It was an easy 400 feet walk but the falls was spectacular as it was late in May and was running with abundant water, as were the other falls we visited. The next falls was the beautiful Whitehorse Falls. It was easily accessible. Watson Falls was next on our list. It is a bit harder to get to and is .4 miles up a trail. It was well worth the trek. The last falls we walked to was Susan Creek Falls. It is an easy walk of .8 miles, wheelchair accessible. We had to scramble over and under fallen trees as BLM hadn't been out to clear the area. We did report this and hopefully all is well. Again this was a beautiful falls. There are many more falls in this National Forest, it would be a great place to spend a few days and view all of them. Only one place to eat, we had packed a picnic lunch, probably the best way to go. A great place for families and people of all ages.

The signs adoring the bridges that cross the North Umpqua River all have exclamation points, and for good reason. This forest offers 80 miles of hiking, with each segment ranging in difficulty and distance. One thing to note, there's quite a bit of poison oak adoring the trail, so be sure to jump into the North Umpqua to make sure the uracil doesn't set in.
I recommend the Mott segment. It's a great hike that isn't too long and gives many places to jump right into the river.
Even in the summer I've rarely crossed paths with another soul, and I'm hesitant to even continue putting this forest on the map with a review. If you get the chance, or even if you don't, create an opportunity for yourself to spend a few good hours out here. The forest is deeply healing and is home to countless waterfalls as well.
There have been times when I've had to stop myself from going too deep into the forest because of lack of preparation. Leaving for only a brisk two mile hike, I accidentally did four. The forest has an insatiable pull, prepare yourself and allow yourself to be taken in by its pull.
Honorable mention goes to Yacso Falls, located by the Lake in the Woods campground.

Whether you're just driving through, or camping and enjoying the nature walks, the Umpqua National Forest offers a variety of activities and beautiful views in any direction you allow your eyes to wander. Two of our favorites are Tokatee Falls and Clearwater Falls because both are located just a short walk from the parking areas and offer splendid views. Bring along food for a picnic or enjoy lunch at Diamond Lake Resort. Be sure to bring snacks and lots of water because there are only a few stores in the region and things can be kind of pricey.

The Umpqua National Forest is almost 1,000,000 acres with half of that covered in Old Growth forests. This forest has 54 campgrounds with 800 campsites, many miles of developed trails and is easily accessible via the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway. The crown jewel in this forest is the Diamond Lake, Mt Bailey, Mt Theissen complex. There is also great fishing on the North Umpqua River that parallels the 138 from Glide to Toketee Lake. There are numerous waterfalls to be seen in this forest also. I recommend stopping at Steamboat Inn for a good meal while traveling this area.

Are dogs allowed on the trails or near the falls? We will be on a road trip with our ESA dog.

I do not remember seeing any "no dogs allowed" signs, but we dont travel with animals, so it isnt a priority for us. I would contact the Main forest office for definitive guidance. 541-957-3200

I saw a picture of multi colored basalt formations and was wondering where they are in the park? I will be in Bend towards the end of May and would like to visit the park to see this attraction and others. Thank you, Robert

Almost sounds like the Painted Hills in the John Day Fossil Beds, betwwen Bend and John Day. I know of none within the Umpqua.
