Toured the Pennsylvania state Capitol building with friends recently. It is a beautiful building with beautiful stained glass , gorgeous woodwork and beautiful marble . Our tour guide a female was excellent. We got to go c the house and senate chambers . The tour was free but u had to make a reservation. We also walked the Capitol grounds and saw the fountain in the back. Great place to visit and State Museum is right next door! Great place to tour if you are ages 9 and older

I have to admit, as we walked towards the building the exterior lacked beauty. Once we opened the door and entered, we could not believe our eyes and each room was more ornate and stunning compared to the last. Incredible tour with Tammy.

Free - Nice informative tour. We enjoyed it. When we were done it occurred to me that we have 50 buildings like this across the country. The opulence and display of wealth caught me off guard. I suppose it's to make us look special and wealthy across the world but every country has the same thing. The gold in this building alone could pay off the national debt.

A stunning, late "Gilded Age" era building (dedicated in 1906) , extremely ornate and symbolic -- European styling, art, stained glass, mosaics, crystal, amazing Moravian floor tiles made in PA, the list goes on. Make a free reservation online for the guided tour. We went on a week-end for a little easier parking while offices were closed (there's no reserved visitor parking anywhere). Also, don't miss all the free brochures and literature in the racks near the front entrance -- beautiful, free picture books with lots of photos of the art and so forth, a very nice memento.

Great tour with guide Tammy (been there 20+ years, fantastic). The building is ornate, stunning and enjoyed learning the history as well. Recommend it.

Beautiful capitol building, especially with the running fountain. The State Street overpass bridge approach to the building is majestic. No free parking to be found though.

Our son had told us that we should add this place to our “must see” list of places to visit. Yesterday, we did and we were far from disappointed!
Our capitol building is truly a gem. Our tour guide was wonderful. She had a comprehensive knowledge of the capitol’s history, it’s numerous works of art (including it’s paintings, incredible light fixtures, original mahogany desks, intricate tile work spelling out quotes surrounding the upper walls and the Moravian tile, made right here in Doylestown, PA, that adorns the floor).
We were definitely “wowed” by the entire experience!
The whole Capitol complex is totally impressive.

I lived in Pennsylvania for years and always promised myself a trip to see the State Capitol. Over a decade after leaving the state, I finally returned to do just that. The building is absolutely breathtaking -- grand staircases, beautiful domes, and the paintings by Violet Oakley a thrill to see. I booked a tour and then roamed freely through the building. If you go, do take the time to visit the governor's reception room, one of the grandest rooms I've ever seen, and Oakley's paintings surpass any to be found in most public and government spaces.

Amazing building. Surprisingly free entry and at the end of the tour free to look around . So much gold! Beautiful design and very well maintained. Children will enjoy spotting the figures and animals in the floor tiles

Parking around the building is at a premium but can be found. Definitely take the tour by a docent. This has to be one of the most elaborate capitol buildings I have visited. I highly recommend making the time to visit.

Hello,
I saw your review about the state capitol. I'm planning on being in Harrisburg March 15-19. I plan to see the capital building. Do you have any other recommendations? We will have a car so we can travel out a bit.

I have seen the fountain look red, on occasion. I remember thinking that someone put too much red into the fountain works. But I am sure that it was in October, and when they had tinted the fountain pink for Breast Cancer Awareness. It is also possible that the time and temperature may have been factors.

Our church is taking a trip to PA to visit Hershey Park during July While in PA i would like us to tour the capital building ,I would like to know do we need to book for a group tour of the capital building.

In addition to visiting the Welcome Center, you may want to consider a 30-minute guided tour of “the handsomest building” President Theodore Roosevelt ever saw. Capitol Tour Guides are available to point out the architectural and artistic highlights, and to make the Capitol’s history come alive for you.
Guided tours of Pennsylvania's Capitol are offered every half hour Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Weekends and most holidays tours are offered at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. The Capitol is closed for tours New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Schedule subject to change without notice.
Tour the Capitol when you are "tour'n PA" by calling the Tour Guide Office 1 - 800 - TOUR N PA (868-7672). Advanced reservations are suggested and required for groups of 10 or more. For your safety, and the safety of others, group size is limited to 80.

What areas are included in the tour? Is there a lot of walking or is it mostly talking? Do you take the stairs or elevators? Where do you meet for the tour to begin? Would it be interesting for my 12 yr old? Thanks in advance!

I was on my own, too. Lobbying as well. Usually 12 year-olds are not too interested in this type of tour unless he or she is unusually interested in architecture or government. I think it's better to just go inside casually with the young 'un and informally walk around.

I believe the guided tours are free. There is no mention of a fee in a brochure we picked up on-site, and no mention of a fee on the web site for the State Capitol. The tours last 30 minutes. Monday through Friday, the tours run every half hour from 8:30 AM to 4 PM. Weekends and holidays, tours are offered at 9 AM and 11 AM, and 1 PM and 3 PM. And there are self-guided brochures available at the information desk if you want to go that route.
