17/5/22 - Tuesday afternoon
We three middle aged guys from London were exploring Wiltshire by car on a Tuesday afternoon on our way back to London.
Trying to find this place via TA or any map apps was difficult as it is not clearly marked and routes are torturous. Following a GglMap lead we came off the main road and drove along a very long country road (Conscience Lane) to eventually get to an unpaved track along a ridge. Other cars were driving slowly along it so we followed them to a 'junction' in the middle of fields and by a woodland. There was no real interpretation or signage as it looks like the landowner begrudgingly allowed the public to walk through his field edges to the fort.
At the junction was a group of landscape painters with their gear out, but they were unable to guide us to the fort. We eventually took a chance, avoiding some walkers and walking ourselves through a style to look at the view, helped by live Gglmap guidance.
Walking along this was obviously a popular walking route for a certain dog owner who liked feeding his dogs tennis balls....... enough said. This is rather sad as this is a low fertility chalk escarpment with a highly biodiverse plant community and resulting insect variety (butterflies in particular).dog faeces encourages rank aggressive plants and outcompetes the low nutrient loving (and 'struggling') chalk grassland herbs. Quite a few cigarette ends spotted have the same result (plus ash).
We walked along the ridge with lovely views south, to find some obvious ramparts at the far point. These were the remains of the quite big but shallow fort. Do not expect any walls! Just a bund of a barrier of four sides. There was no interpretation at all, fair enough. The plant variety was impressive but spoilt by some careless and thoughtless visitors' used barbecue tray with a foot square of grass beneath!
I tweeted about this, no reply, as it is private land. So sad.
A litter pick on the way back included that aluminium tray, mauled tennis balls, cigarette stubs and a few sweet wrappers. Most people respected this ancient site with a view. We walked along the official path as opposed to the farmer's track parallel. The path was unmanaged though and the nettles on bare legs were not welcome so keep to the relatively open farmer's track and mind the dog mess!

Stunning views. Not wheelchair friendly and some steep drops through the woodland so with little ones you need to keep and extra eye. Definitely worth visiting!!

Some good walks up there but preferably on a warm and ideally dry day. Plenty of parking which I would recommend you use

Not the easiest to find but once there (after a bumpy track) you have some wonderful views. The ground can be slippery in places and there are some quite steep slopes to look out for but this is a great place to come and experience the Wiltshire countryside.

Bring a coat because its windy, it doesn't matter what time of year - its windy!
I've been coming here since a young child with great memories. Now my own child is building memories here too.
This was the first walk we took our beloved family pet and sadly the place we led her to rest scattering her ashes here earlier on this year in the 3ft of snow

I walked up to Roundswell Hill as I have read about the battle and the Parliamentarians fleeing and falling over the edge where 600 died. Imagine my confusion when reading the information board at the top to be told it was the Royalists that fell!!! How on earth can they get that so wrong?

Well worth the struggle to find our way up here . Great views, great feeling of space and fresh air and peace and quite. Informative notice boards

Roundway down is best approached from below walking up between the strange furrowed Hillside. It is less well known than nearby Westbury white horse but no less fascinating for its sense of History.a great place for a country walk with the dog or a summer picnic

After calling at Reeves Bakery in Devizes, we enjoyed a brisk walk with our collie then a peaceful picnic in our motor home with wonderful views. Will return in the spring.
