‪Interesting in a very unassuming way.‬

‪Spent an hour in here. Got a few interesting features. Including a scratch clock outside and a stone featuring an ancient Roman figure.‬

‪We wandered in to this interesting building during a visit to the town last week. Greeted by the Churchwarden who gave us a little potted history. We plan to go back and have a better look around as they were setting up for a concert‬

‪Location overlooking Marlborough town...‬
بمفردك • يونيو 2019
‪Visited on Saturday morning after climbing the steps to gain views across the high street and general township.
Very friendly welcome from the helpful volunteers inside the church and then a chance to take photos of the architecture and points of interest.
Historic church serving the interests of the people of Marlborough.‬

‪Exterior promises more.‬

‪This church, sited at the eastern end of the town, is very much steeped in history.
The internal inspection was a bit disappointing compared to others of this age. It is quite modern inside and, I felt, lacked the energy that centuries of love, pray and devotion had instilled.
The equivalent of a "barn conversion" has taken away it's inner beauty. That said it is still a focal point for the local community.‬

‪Visited for a concert‬

‪We came here for an evening concert with a ladies choir and a male voice choir. As well as the concert being excellent the church proved to be an excellent venue with tremendous acoustics. It was also nice to see that they had taken the time to produce a detailed history of the church and explain why it is so plain on the inside. The church was badly damaged in the great Marlborough fire of 1653, and was rebuilt under the Commonwealth which is why it is so plain inside. It is an historical oddity to be one of the few examples to be effectively built in the period of Cromwell’s rule, and that is captured very well in an interesting booklet available in the church.

‪A Cromwellian oddity‬
زوجان • أكتوبر 2016
‪A brief look inside St Mary's will probably disappoint, it is lopsided. The pillars, that are on side of the nave only, fight with the arch of the chancel, and those who prefer a church to be a relic of a bygone era rather than a vibrant place of worship and social occasions will be disappointed as all the pews have been replaced by chairs on an attractive parquet floor.
The oddity is that it used to be a rectangular protestant reading room with a pulpit on the north wall (which makes sense of the pillars that would have been along the back). The church was then reorientated east-west, anglo/catholic style and the chancel added (which is why it fights the pillars).
Cromwellian? Well, the Great Fire of Marlborough 1653 (a prototype for London 13 years later) swept along the High Street and into St Mary's causing the roof to collapse and other major damage. Oliver C either ordered or invited (arguments as to which) other towns and cities to contribute to the repair costs. Why? Well the east end of the town with St Mary's was Roundhead, the west end with St Peter's was Cavalier and both churches have bullet damage to 'prove' it.
That's the building, an oddity, but visit for a service and you won't find a friendlier atmosphere, nor more inspired and inspiring teaching. Enjoy the service and stay for coffee, cake and a chat. Why only 3 stars? Well it is a fairly ordinary church with a rather heavy emphasis on communion services that don't appeal to 'seekers' or those who prefer greater flexibility.‬

‪Marlborough is such an old town and the centre has not been spoiled. With the widest high street in England where there is a local market every Wednesday and Saturday it makes for an interesting conversation piece.‬

‪Another church turned into a meeting hall.‬

‪It has been a long time since I entered this church, all the pews are gone along with any loveliness it ever had. It is certainly spacious and has a good deal of history.‬

‪Marlborough is a lovely town and all the churches there are worth a visit. I thought St Mary's was beautiful, and I'd happily re-visit it in the future.‬

‪Lovely church in the centre of Marlborough, but - like so many other churches - they have ripped out their original pews. Very sad. ‬
