Great place to visit on a Saturday afternoon with the kids in Stockport, the kids are starting to learn about WW2 in school, so it’s brilliant to have the shelter on our doorstep, so learning can be put into perspective for them. It’s cheap to visit for adults, kids are free. Great information at hand and team made us very welcomed. Sorry I didn’t get the name of the gentleman who explained the shelter to us, funny and friendly and full of knowledge, great asset.
The tunnels were clearly displayed and the flow of the direction is clear to follow. Very interesting and an eye opener. It’s one of the largest shelters built in the UK.
Lots of information for the kids to take on board. I would love to do the twilight tour and see of the tunnels which says is more suitable for older kids.

Can't believe the price's they charge..my friend and myself went for coffee and teacakes you don't pay till you've eaten so was shocked when the bill came £15 which we thought was to much they charged £4 for a toasted teacake with jam and it was a cheap teacake very bland will not be going again..

Visited today after the Hat Works Museum. Both are council run but this costs £5.50 to enter - well worth the admission cost!!
You start off with a bit of a show about air raids and the start of the war then get to explore the tunnels. There’s loads of signage to read with information and even contemporary posters giving advice on what to do in an air raid. Plus you can sit in an Anderson shelter!
I honestly didn’t realise so much went on in air raid shelters. There were toilets, a first aid area, even a little canteen. It was really interesting to see how normal people lived during the war and just simple stuff like how the bunks were set out - too claustrophobic for me!
The staff were lovely as well and my friend loved the gift shop.

An amazing slice of history. The entrance doesn't give any hint of the story that lies behind. Plenty of information boards and free audio guide give an idea of what life was like during WW2. Very reasonable priced and within minutes of bus interchange and car parks

This is a large WW2 air raid shelter built to accommodate a few thousand people. We were given audio guides and set off on our own. The audio guide was clear and concise and the arrows on the ground and walls provided a clear path to follow. It was eerie never encountering any other visitors during our whole walk underground. Definitely go to get a real feel of what it must've been like during the war.

Tucked away in the centre of Stockport is this amazing attraction. As I told friends about it many of them said they had walked/run past it and never been inside.
Surprisingly as it is built into the rock and almost at ground level there's only 3 steps to get into the main part so good for accessability!
There is an ingenious audio tour included with the price of admission which is very reasonable. A fascinating look into the past with loads of authentic items on display.
The air raid shelters are self guided tour although there are special evenings where you get to see behind the scenes and into some of the locked areas.

The self-guided tour is excellent and very good value for money. Staff were welcoming and friendly. It’s great to find out about Stockport’a contribution to the war effort. Really enjoyed our visit.

Highly recommend a visit gives a real insight into the war.
Going to do the extended tour in a few weeks to see more of were parts are closed

Cannot fault the place, such a brilliant piece of local history that's super interesting for people visiting from anywhere. Well worth the admission price and staff are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic

Absolutely fascinating. Got a great sense of how life was at the time, and the conditions people survived in. Interesting and inspiring.

Do the car parks in stock port get very busy during the Easter holidays - reading the reviews it seems there is a multi story very close but how easy would it be to find a space on a Friday morning during Easter holidays ?

Would the air raid shelters be ok for someone with limited walking ability, are there any steep slopes or steps?

It depends which tour you choose the standard self guided which is shorter would not be to bad as its mostly flatish but it depends how bad your walking problem is. The longer guided with them is quite a lot longer and more unstable ground.

Two questions. 1. Is this likely to be interesting to a child of 9? 2. Would it be pretty cold in there visiting now, i.e. January?

I would say yes it would be interesting but the film beforehand could be a drag as it goes on a bit, not sure about a coat we were fine in just a thin jacket.

I would say, at least an hour but it would depend on how interested you are. If you want to listen to all the stories and read all the information panels them this will obviously take more time than than if you just walk and just look at the displays.

Its open everyday days exept monday from 1pm to 5pm saturday 10am to 5pm sunday 11am to 5pm but only for the shorter self guided tour a longer guided tour is once a month for that you must ring for details enterence fee £4.75 and £3.50 for over 65s and students
