The Mill Creek Falls Trail is a section of the Mason-Dixon Trail. From Lancaster County cross the Norman Wood Bridge into York County and take first right onto River Road. The trail head is past Lock No 12. You'll see it after passing a stone wall on the left. We went down to the next pull off lot on the right and walked back to the trailhead. The waterfall is about 3 minutes in on the trail. We were there in fall but the hillside is covered with rhododendrons so we'll be back in the spring to see that display. After the waterfall there are some switchbacks up the mountain. The trail blazes are sky blue and easy to follow. Walking sticks are helpful and I wouldn't want to do it if it's wet. Don't let the switchbacks deter you, once you get past them it's not bad and there are lots of overlooks on the top of ridge that make it worth the climb. We're 68 and 70 and the hike took us about an hour. You end up on a gravel road by the Holtwood Dam, walk a few feet and turn right onto River Road and continue back to parking lot. You'll pass a porta potty on the way. This was a wonderful, peaceful hike. Highly recommend it! Afterwards you can drive down and take a peek at Lock No 12 on the old canal.

I've parked at lock 12 and hiked from there twice now. You can walk through parts of the old canal system as well as read about the history of the canal. The first part of the hike along the Mason Dixon Trail is easy, you pass some small waterfalls going off large boulders, you can even kick off your shoes and cool off in some sections. Very scenic. Shortly after the falls, the hiking gets pretty strenuous, a lot of up hill to get to a crest then down hill then back up, etc. There are some cool look outs down to the river and dam at the top. If you are looking to do a 3 mile loop, turn around once you go down a hill and hit a powerline.
When I went in the summer, the parking lot was spacious and there were places to picnic. However, my most recent trip at the very end of March, 72 degree day, all the parking was closed because according to the park it was still winter and they don't open until the spring... so everyone had to invent their own parking along the side. Helpful hint if this happens to you, a lot of people pulled off the road right at the entrance where it was really tight, but if you keep going down the road you'll find better, easier pull offs.

Just down the river from where we live, we never get tired of the views from above the dam or from the bridge. Not currently open to the public, bit I took a tour when it was open a few years ago. Very historic.

I took my grandson here for a few hours in July. We enjoyed walking around and taking some pictures. Nothing spectacular but it was nice.

Who the hell makes a dam out of plywood? Most of the dam is broken and the debris has polluted and overflooded the river. Rookie mistake that most likely won't be fixed for years.
What a shame.
What a shame.

The Holtwood Dam and Loch 12 interpretive area is a good place to take a walk along the Susquehanna river. The Mason-Dixon hiking trail passes through this area and there are several areas to access the river including an historically informative area on the old canal/barge system. A short hike, about midway to the dam, takes you up along a cascade of water and boulders. It is a cool spot on a hot day and beautiful anytime of the year. You should go! Other hikes in the area. You should also check out downstream a bit and past the Norman Wood bridge for more pull offs and access to water and trails Parking and boat launch. Good for fishing and kayaking.

Used to come here and spot nesting Bald Eagles along the river. Very scenic and not frequented by too many visitors.

But only because I like that it's not very well known. This is a great place for a quiet walk by the river or check out the abandoned locks in the adjacent parks. Peaceful and unspoiled without many amenities or parking.

The area of Holtwood Dam, Lock 12 and Mill Creek Falls is fantastic! The hiking trails are great and the scenery is beyond beautiful! Great Picnic area available and also bathrooms below the Lock 12 parking lot. Will be returning for sure!

I'm by no means an expert kayaker, but there is a great "play area" for experience kayakers on the York side of the Dam. On the south side of the nearby Norman Wood Bridge, there is enjoyable and more relaxing canoeing and kayaking opportunities. You might see some Herons or even Bald Eagles. Paddling between the boulders lining the main channels is wonderful. We enjoy taking friends there. Be careful of water levels. You should be safe between June and September when levels are lower. For a bit more adventure, check out Muddy Creek, but PLEASE research it before going or you could be in danger if you don't know the dangerous spots to walk around.

So did the tour include the viewing of the hydroelectric generators, or was it only an external tour? Thanks.

There are plenty of places for drives in the local area. Check out Indian Steps Museum in the York side and Pequea area on the Lancaster side of the river. If you are willing to drive a bit further, John Wright Restaurant and Moon Dancer Winery are within 30 min drive and very scene to get to both. Safe travels
