This is a beautiful and scenic trail that is great for hiking with others or with pets. We love to take both of our dogs to this trail, they are english labs and love it! This trail is completely free and great for families.

Great to pair with Fallingwater. The terrain is rocky and uneven but the yellow loop isn’t very hilly. Excellent blazes. Estimate on time was fairly close. Nothing spectacular to see on the yellow loop - just a good woodsy trail that we had to ourselves in a recent Friday afternoon.

We wanted to get a hike in and were surprised that there is a hefty $33 per person entrance fee for Fallingwater and even a $10 per person fee for hiking on the property. But connected to the Fallingwater property is the Bear Run Nature Preserve with nice trails, completely free. Park behind the barn, across from the Fallingwater entrance, and there is a nice sign with marked trails of varying lengths. Something for everyone. Even a couple of picnic tables.

My husband and I visited Bear Run Nature Reserve while visiting Pittsburgh. It was about a 90 minute drive from the city, and offered plenty of trails to experience and views of the early fall foliage. We visited Fallingwater, which was beautiful, and hiked the Paradise Overlook Trail, which was an easy hike with a lovely view of the Youghiogheny River Gorge. I'd definitely recommend a trip if you're in the vicinity!

I went here just by accident, passing by on my way to Falling Waters. Turned around and checked it out, truly a hidden jem. Trails are quiet and peaceful, well maintained and posted very well. Great place for a quick hike.

The trails here are beautiful, you can tell the preservation group really does a beautiful job maintaining the trails.. I wish I lived here so I could enjoy these quiet trails more often..

Bear Run has a network of about 21 miles of trails color-coded for difficulty. Each color loop has a suggested completion time (on the trail map). You can mix or match to get a nifty workout. The easier trails are suitable for kids, even toddlers. The terrain is a mix of streams, hills, meadows, and forest. In late June, early July, the rhododendron are in bloom. Spring features a nice collection of wildflowers. In winter, the trails are suitable for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The trail system has improved vastly over the past few years as the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has put a lot of effort into improving and maintaining the trail system.

I'm almost reluctant to review this because if more people discover how fabulous it is it won't be as exclusive as I've experienced it. Trails meander through different forest types alongside and crossing over pristine mountain streams. In May one enjoys blooming Mt. Laurel, in June/July Rhododendron and multicolored leaves in fall. Many days I've been on the reserve and not seen another human. The Arbutus Trail is one of my favorites especially when spring wildflowers are blooming. Take a guide book along with you to identify them. It's free and open 24/7. Thank you to the Western PA Conservancy for maintaining this property for all to enjoy.

We have been hiking many of the trails in the area since we located here two years ago, and have found this one to be exceptionally beautiful! Trails are well marked and maintained. There was very little foot traffic the day we were there, which can make for a very peaceful hike. There are some campgrounds that you can hike in and out of, but they are primitive, with little more than a fire ring and a small clearing. Just a word to the wise, during hunting season it is recommended to wear an orange vest (as we have found in some other parks). But don't let that stop you! It's well worth it, trails range from very short to up to 11.9 miles long, or any combination. Enjoy!

Hi,
We are planning a trip to Fallingwater over Memorial Day weekend 2021. We have 9:30am tour tickets and wish to hike one of the Bear Run loops after our tour.
Is it possible to park the car just once and enjoy both activities??
If so, should we park at the Fallingwater Visitor Center or at the Bear Run Nature Reserve lot? We don’t mind a walk to avoid searching/waiting for parking.
Thank you.

Yes. Dogs are permitted. But just as with any forest they should be on a leash since there are other hikers and there are the typical woods hazards of bears and snakes.

How do you get to Bear Run Nature Reserve from the Fallingwater House in Mill Run, PA?
(driving directions, please)

Fallingwater is part of the Bear Run Nature Reserve. Across the highway from the entrance to Fallingwater and about a quarter of a mile North on 381, you'll find the offices of the Bear Run Nature Reserve.
