We have long wanted to enjoy a quiet, leisurely, afternoon trip, rafting down an easy meandering river. So, we contacted Ohiopyle Trading Post and River Tours. They were excellent from the start. They have a comprehensive webpage describing their operation, and they were very thorough and patient with phone calls seeking clarifications. When the big day came, the staff were prepared and did a great job getting us geared up for the adventure.
Now the perplexing part. The trip down the river was supposed to be easy and restful. But we had a hard time for nearly four hours fighting the rocks and getting snagged on them time and again. It was a rough haul. A few conversations afterward, with friends who have rafted quite a bit at various spots along the East Coast, we came to think perhaps the river water level was low. Such might be the case in that it was late in the summer season, as compared to earlier in the year when winter runoff and spring rains raise the water level. Our struggles might also have been compounded as two of us were in the one raft as compared to each navigating in separate smaller rafts with less weight and thus more buoyancy. I don't know.
What I do know is that Ohiopyle Trading Post and River Tours does a great job; no complaints with them. And I do also know that we had a fun day, though an unexpectedly demanding one, in an absolutely beautiful part of the Pennsylvania mountains. I am not sure if I will raft again too soon. But the Ohiopyle area we will assuredly visit again.

Super fun day!
- fewer boats than other larger companies, making for a speedy and nonstop ride
- good camaraderie amongst the team
- booked easily over the phone
- so much of the experience is about the guide - Caleb was awesome, teaching us about the rapids and lots of fun paddle time for us
- convenient to meet in friendsville MD or ohiopyle PA depending on your location
** for friendsville meet up -- would have been quicker to meet at directly at the community park (take out) rather than on maple st

The staff, rapids, guides and overall experience was fantastic. There are several other white water rafting companies in the area. This is far and away the best. On the upper Yough (class V) trip they use small boats with max 4 capacity and only take a few rafts out at a time which keeps the day moving nicely -- in the bigger companies there's >10 rafts and after each rapid we passed these companies as they all had to pull over and wait for each other. Safety was taken very seriously, and we had a great with time with our guide Caleb!

Ask for Rick, Nick, or Riley to be your guides! I went down the Lower Yough on Level 3 rapids. It was incredible! The guides are all so knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to assist with equipment, on the raft, and guide the raft. You can't go wrong with choosing Ohiopyle for your whitewater rafting trip. I would definitely go back and try Level 5, since I feel so safe with the guides in your raft with you (if you opt for this, and highly recommend that you do).

This was our first time going white water rafting. We had a fantastic time! Caleb our guide was the best! He explained how everything was going to go so we knew what to expect on each part of the trip. He was very friendly and made all of us laugh.

Ask for Ryan and be sure to tip your guides and also make sure you have a guide. As soon as we were able to demonstrate proficiency we were then able to do fun stuff like front load and spin!!!

We had an amazing trip with Ohiopyle Trading Post down the Upper Yough with our phenomenal, guide, Caleb. Although our family of five had varying degrees of rapids rafting experience (from having rafted 3s and 4s to no experience at all), our guides made us feel safe yet exhilarated through even the most challenging of rapids (with their very colorful nicknames!). There's so many rapids to prepare for and navigate that the time goes (sorry) rapidly by, and the sense of being deep within the natural world makes the experience all the more enchanting. While it's possible on the Upper Yough to find yourself bounced into the river by a nasty rapid, you never feel worried, as your guide and fellow passengers swiftly pull you back in for more fun. Besides, before the trip even begins, you'll have been well coached on various possibilities and what to do if they arise. Fantastic river + exceptional guides/captains = a great time for all.

We had a great time rafting down the river with our guide Johnny Utah! He was super fun and well educated about the river! I especially loved how he sang as we went! And although it was rainy and early in the morning when we went, it didn’t take away from the trip. In fact, it make it better due to the fact that practically nobody else was on the river. That made for a nice private family rafting trip. Also, the overcast skies allowed us to see lots of birds including Great Blue Herons and a Bald Eagle! Overall it was an awesome trip, and I would definitely recommend both the company and our guide!

My husband and I escaped the kids to raft down the Upper Yough with the fabulous staff from Ohiopyle Trading Post. It was an absolutely amazing afternoon of adventure with our awesome guide, Caleb, safety kayaker, Robert, and Utah guiding the other raft. We had a ton of fun and an unplanned swim and dip along the way through the rapids. We had a crazy fun experience with our safety never in question. Highly recommend! We're looking forward to doing another trip with Ohiopyle Trading Post and our kids soon.

How long is the shuttle ride from check in to River? And then from end of trip back to base?

About 3 minutes to the river and 20 minutes or so coming back
My husband and I will be camping next week, 8/17, in Ohiopyle, what is the minimum amount of people for a raft? We have Covid-19 concerns.

When we went it was a minimum of 4 individuals. I will say I felt totally comfortable with going as all the educational information and safety briefings were held outside. And if you only have 4 people in the raft, you are pretty far spaced.

You would have to do the middle portion of the river. The upper is really advanced while the lower is intermediate, but children have to be 12. I would consider doing the middle float by yourself and no guide.

We are planning to come in August and would like to raft the Lower Yough but will be traveling with 11 and 13 year old boys. Per the website, 11 years old is allowed if fully guided (which we would do anyways) BUT I wanted an opinion on safety and/or alternate recommendations. Both boys are competitive swimmers and I rafted the Lower (and Upper) as a much younger adult. The middle Yough will likely be too tame for us all..... Thanks!
