‪Thought Mount Davis would be more, it wasn't! You can drive to the area of the tower but can't see it from the road, at least not during the summer time. Wanted to do the tower: couldn't do it. There are seven flights of stairs at about a 45 degree angle. I did six of the stairs and my vertigo said: "No More." Without the tower there is no view, just lots of trees. If you don't think you can do the tower don't waste the triip.‬

‪While coming back a road trip, my husband and I stopped at the highest point in Pennsylvania at 3,213'. On the way there, you drive through nice, scenic Amish country. The highest point features a tower that you can climb up. It was a sunny, clear day and we were able to view a lot of the surrounding area.‬

‪You can actually drive to the actual high point of Pennsylvania. The Mt Davis high point is actually on the side of the Mt Davis road. The Mt Davis observation tower is 0.5 mile away from the highest point sign. You can drive on a dirt road to the base of the tower if you choose. We parked at the Mt Davis High Point trail head and walked/hiked to the tower. Finding the start point of the hike from the parking area was a challenge. It is located in the SW corner of the clearing. The actual walk was pleasant, seems like it doubles as a stream bed, we had to hop on rocks a couple of times. At the end of the trail there is a rock formation and a few interesting plaques (also unfortunate stories of past). Definitely loved the plaques. The climb up the tower was steep and good, but the stairwells are narrow and the stairs are sometimes uneven. I actually felt the need to be more careful coming down the tower. Upon return we came upon another would be hiker wandering in the clearing in the parking area looking for the trailhead. Good that we were able to point it out.‬

‪This state high point is just a very short walk from the parking lot. Really liked the tower. Nice view.‬

‪Pennsylvania's state high point, and the excitement factor probably depends on the season and the weather. I went on a cloudy, sunless day in late summer. I drove up to the parking by the observation tower, walked around for 15 minutes, took my pictures with geological survey marker (tricky to find, see below photo) and left. I went up there for the sole reason of reaching a state high point; mission accomplished. I have no idea what the views are like from the top of the observation tower; I didn't bother because of the weather.

While driving up there, be careful of the all the horse manure piles in the road; the area just below Mount Davis is Amish and/or Mennonite community. And take it slow on the road. It's paved, but narrow and open for two-way traffic that can include horse drawn carriages.‬

‪As somebody who is relatively new to highpointing (getting to the highest natural point of elevation within a certain area, such as a state), my experience at Pennsylvania’s highest point was a scary one that changed how I will prepare for any future highpointing adventures. I was on spring break from college and my fiancée and I decided to drive to Somerset County to visit her great grandma. Before we left on our trip, my fiancée warned me that the Somerset area receives a lot of snow each season but was unsure of how much they get in March. I later discovered through Wikipedia that Somerset County and Garrett County, Maryland are some of the snowiest inhabited areas in the country. During the trip, I was repeatedly surprised at how much snow fell nearly every day despite the forecast saying otherwise.

My fiancée and I were out visiting different sights in Somerset County, with the Flight 93 National Memorial being one of them (which I highly recommend) on the day of our experience. After we ate dinner at the White House Restaurant in Meyersdale (which was also amazing), we drove to Mount Davis. As we got closer to the summit, my phone was indicating that the next left turn was the road leading to the summit. For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to go down the road even though it looked like it had not been plowed recently. I think it was because the snow didn’t look that deep but looking back on this decision, it was a stupid of me to make the turn and we were not at all prepared for an emergency.

Without going into the entire story, my front-wheel drive car with its 6.5 inches of ground clearance got stuck going down South Wolf Rock Road. Thankfully, my fiancée and I had our boots and an extra layer of clothing on us since it was unseasonably cold that day. What made matters worse was that both of our phones could not get service near the summit and they died shortly after. Fortunately, they died after we called the police and a tow truck.

Trooper Clark with the Pennsylvania State Police showed up and helped us. I explained the situation to him and said that we were waiting for a tow truck and he let us sit in his car to warm up. While we were waiting, he told us some important information that anybody planning to visit Mount Davis in the winter needs to know. South Wolf Rock Road, the road that leads to the summit, is signed "no winter maintenance" and it becomes a snowmobile trail, which is something only the locals know about. He also said that the police get about 20 calls each season from people who tried to go down South Wolf Rock Road and got stuck. To top it off, there weren’t any houses, areas of shelter, or bathrooms close to the summit. Mount Davis is in a pretty remote area.

Ultimately, I want leave you with a word of caution about going to both Mount Davis in the winter because of the lack of winter maintenance, and Somerset County due to the amount of snow that falls there. If you’re in a small car like mine, you would be better off not going to this area of Pennsylvania in the winter. I am not planning on highpointing again anytime soon but whenever I go back to claim Mount Davis, it will surely be during the summer. Lastly, I want to give a huge shout-out to Trooper Clark from the Pennsylvania State Police. God bless you and thank you for everything you did for me and my fianceé that day!‬

‪This attraction is pretty secluded, it has very limited resources and is basically a great climb on a watch tower. Anyone scared of heights will find it daunting. Best time of year to visit is around fall time.‬

‪There is a short walk on gravel to get to the tower. To see anything, you’d need to climb about 80 steps to the top of the tower. There were 4 senior citizens in our group and only one made it to the top. There is an expansive view from the there (so I was told). Otherwise, the thick trees block any view. It is a beautiful, serene place but we couldn’t fully enjoy it. Note-there are no restrooms in the vicinity. ‬

‪It is a beautiful area, the drive to get there is beautiful. We were there on a cloudy, misty day, so I can't speak for the view, but we did climb the tower. You can take a short walk or as long a hike as you wish. It's also a very nice picnic area if you go in good weather.‬

‪we went here over the weekend for a little trip. It was about a mile walk from the parking lot/picnic area to the observation tower. Nice hike, flat ground, a little rocky in some spots. I think we came a little late to see the fall foliage. Pretty much all of the leaves were off of the trees. It was really cool to see the highest point in the state (located on a rock by the tower). The tower is a little scary to climb up if you aren't good with heights, but it is worth it. You can see Maryland from the tower.‬
