‪The museum is about a 1.5-hour drive from Philadelphia, all but the final 10 miles being 4-lane expressways. The collection of old and restored engines and cars is excellent, with more than a dozen engines and two dozen cars inside the main building. About half are from the Pennsylvania Railroad (including a GG! and passenger cars), but other eastern railroads are also represented. The outside area has a slightly smaller number of engines and cars, most of which need some additional restoration. As other reviewers note, you cannot go inside more than a couple of engines and cars, but there are nice narratives posted throughout. There is also a very nice model train exhibit (HO and other scales). The staff is OK -- not especially outgoing, but not hostile either.‬

‪The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania was a lot of fun to visit; it has a huge number of engines and rail cars on display, both indoors and outdoors. The emphasis seems to be on equipment used by railroads in the east Atlantic region. That's understandable -- the comparable railroad museum in Sacramento, California focuses on engines and cars used out west. The museum here in Strasburg has equipment spanning from the early 1800s to pretty modern diesel engines. It's easy to get lost in the long corridors between the lines of cars, but everything is interesting in its own way, and each piece of rolling stock seemed to have its own descriptive plaque. Unfortunately, very few of any of the cars are open for visitors to actually enter, which is too bad. Although we ran out of time (the museum closes at 4 pm) and it was raining, it would have been interesting to walk around outside as well, since there appeared to be an old turntable on the west side of the building with more rail cars around it. There was a publicly-accessible catwalk under the ceiling that allows one to get some great high-view photos of the collection in the main hall.
Admission was $10 and during our visit on a Friday afternoon, the museum wasn't all that crowded, which was nice. There's an interesting gift shop just inside the front entrance. Parking in the fair-sized lot on the east side is free. Note that there is a driveway on the north side of the building for accessability drop-off.‬

‪Great Destination ! Very large with displays and equipment both inside and outside. Plan on at least a couple of hours or more if you're a railfan. You can get above and below some of the displays and depending on which volunteers are there; some are open for visits. Price is one of the best deals around - and Yes, I'll go again. Since it is across the street from the Strasburg RR (Not Related), you can easily get your fill of trains in one day. Now to sort out the dozens of pictures that I took........‬

‪The museum is a very modern in presentation. There are many interactive displays for all ages. All the displays have accompanying descriptions. Many have a video as well. Much of the railroad equipment has been restored. There are examples that cover two centuries of rail transportation. A group of repeating videos add an interesting panorama of railroad history. As middling train buffs, we learned a lot. Entrance to exit our visited was about two hours.‬

‪My husband and I went to this museum twice in one week. The first time we just toured the outside part across the street from the museum. It was set up with Easter displays and was fun to walk around and see the trains. We had our dog so we couldn't go into the museum. The next day we toured the actual museum and it was fun! Please note that this is big museum. I had expected something smaller but it is not.

We spent quite a lot of time here and didn't get a chance to see the outside yards. We enjoyed walking through the old station set up. The model displays were fun. The trains were great. My husband is knowledgeable about trains and so it was fun to have him explain stuff to me that I would otherwise not know. I especially enjoyed "The Tale of Two Engines" John Bull story. I also enjoyed the display that shows what how trains looks like underneath - how it all works! (valve gear, equalizing springs, brake ash pan, water supply hose and more). At the end we went upstairs and got a great view of the museum. This upstairs area is where people wait to take a train ride (only on weekends). There are questions on the floor about the trains you see. They were fun to answer. We didn't get a chance to go out to the yard but on our next visit we will.
Highly recommend for families or couples. The staff is quite nice and answered any questions we had.‬

‪The museum had so much to look at but not enough open to explore. Everything that you could have went in on was chained off. It was cool to actually see the different trains and take in our history but it got repetitive. The interactive train section was broken and what did work wasn’t fun. Overall it was just ok if your not a conductor who wasn’t interested. I think they need to switch some gears to a better choo choo experience.‬

‪This is a great museum if you are interested in the history of American rail travel and want to see preserved locomotives and rail cars up close. If you are indifferent to the history of American rail travel, you'll probably be bored. The restored locomotives and rail cars are wonders to see up close. No, you can't get into the cabs of the locomotives, but you can see some of them from platforms at the rear of the locomotives. This museum is a must-see for people who are interested in the history of the Pennsylvania Railroad. In addition to the restored items under roof, the museum contains an extensive outside boneyard of locomotives. If you have ever spent any time taking trains on the Northeast Corridor, this museum will bring back memories of the Amtrak trains you rode in. I spent a few years in the late 1970s riding Amtrak back and forth between Philadelphia and DC. The museum contained two items that brought back memories of that time. First, the museum has a restored General Electric GG-1, the most successful locomotive of all time, that pulled the trains I rode. It's a monster, but one with style. courtesy of designer Raymond Loewy. Second, the museum has the mechanical split flap schedule board that for years informed passengers at Philadelphia's 30th Street Station about the status of the trains. As I looked at the schedule board I could recall the distinctive sound that board made as it updated. Anyone who has spent time in a transportation hub that used one of those schedule boards knows the sound. I highly recommend spending 2-3 hours in the museum....that is, unless you don't care about the history of American railroads. If you are one of these people, either skip the place or drop off your railroad fan companion at the museum, spend a couple of hours doing something that interests you, then come back, pick them up, and be prepared to listen to them tell you what you missed.‬

‪What a collection! Pretty much train engines and cars from various eras and lines awaits you at this fantastic train museum. Indoors, and dedicted to the great history of the railroad you will be amazed at the huge amount of trains you can explore here.
My husband even got to step into the cab of a electric engine, which thrilled him to no end.
There are several great side exhibits as well. Including a nice children's ( not just the kids, mind you) train exploration lab with several working RR train sets to use hands on.
Various side displays ( an antique hearse, army jeep, to name a few) in addition to the large train collection round out your walking exploration of the aisles of trains.
This is a "don't miss" for any train fan and an exciting adventure for everyone. ‬

‪We recently had the opportunity to visit the museum and enjoyed it immensely. They have a large collection of locomotives and other train cars. I especially liked the way the museum was laid out lake an early 20th century train station with store fronts, old trucks and wagons. Really made the old railroad days come alive. The only thing that would have made it better would have been having more trains open to go inside. There was only one locomotive open and another guest was hogging the opening so you couldn't even peek inside, not the museums fault.‬
