While in Lancaster county there wasn’t much open in a Sunday so we did railroad ride and visit to this museum. I really enjoyed the displays and looking at the many rail cars. Great place to spend a few hours.

Must do if you're in the area. $10 admission good for all day as long as you keep your receipt/ticket. So many things to see and interact with, they also have an outside train yard. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. This is directly across the street from the Strausburg Railroad. No food or drinks in the Museum but there is a small table area with vending machines for you to enjoy.

Unbelievably impressive. Well laid out, friendly, knowledgeable staff and plenty of parking. Dozens of old trains from the very early days of steam to diesel/electric. I'm no expert in this area and that's the point, I learnt so much and my two grandsons (aged 5 and 2), loved every minute. It is is spotlessly clean, well laid out and some of the exhibits offer specialist guides to explain more. You can also actually go on the some of the exhibits which are clearly marked. There is also a very large model railway with different gauge trains that is equally impressive. A play area for kids is nearby. Weather permitting, you can visit the adjoining rail yard with more examples of trains and rolling stock. This is a large professional museum and the organizers have done an excellent job with the design and exhibits alike.

Das Museum ist sehr liebevoll gestaltet. Es gibt natürlich viele restaurierte Züge zu bewundern, aber auch einen vollständig eingerichteten Bahnsteig mit detailverliebter Dekoration. Alles sehr lehrreich aufbereitet.

We drove down to Strasburg to do trains for the day. First stop was the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Parking was easy, they have a lot adjacent to the museum. It helped too that we were there in the fall and during the week.
The museum is gigantic and filled with trains, and two toy train displays. We spent 4 hours at the museum exploring the trains, the history of the trains and railroad history. Mr. B is a train buff and I enjoy them. We found this museum to be extremely impressive. The staff were helpful, both toy train displays had docents next to them to talk about them, which was fun. There was so much history in this building and we thoroughly enjoyed the time.
There are quite a few trains outside, so don't skip those exhibits. Great photo ops.

I visited the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania this past week. It was interesting to see the evolution of trains throughout the years. My favorite one was the train on display that was used in the movie “Hello Dolly!”. If you want to take a step back in time, check this museum out!

This is a top-notch railroad museum. The collection focuses on roads that once served the state. The large indoor collection is all cosmetically restored to like-new condition and runs the gamut from early steam engines to modern electric and diesel locomotives, as well as various freight and maintenance equipment. Informative displays are throughout the exhibit including access to some of the equipment on display. The outdoor display includes many more pieces in various states of disrepair and apparently slated for future restoration. Plans also include a future roundhouse.

Rows of locomotives, some you can walk aboard. There is a stairwell that leads to view under one of the locomotives. Many artifacts along the Main Street and Steinmann Station. There is a model train exhibit as well.

I would not recommend the museum to anyone. The staff (with the exception of one gentleman) was incredibly rude. There is no upkeep being done to the trains as all of it looks run down, empty, or just rusting and falling apart (their outside train yard). Their entire model train exhibit didn't work. They shut down large portions of their exhibit well before they said they were going to close it. It may have been a fun experience in the past, but it is no longer.

Though very well organized, viewers were once able to go into several trains. As of early 9/22 -- we were only allowed into one train. Why is this?

$10 for adults $9 with a AAA card. Not sure about kids.

Depends on how fast you move around in the museum , it is inside and outside . for me it was about an hour i spent inside , didnt go outside will do that next trip. and dont forget the Strasburg RR across the street, steam engines pull the passanger cars .

Lots of exhibits and space inside!
Some of the cars are open for exploration, some you can climb stairs to peak in but all are fascinating just to look at from different angles from the floor or walk way to the second floor exhibit! I could have spent 4 hours there, but I had only 2!

I will be travelling with my 10 year old son and heard that in addtion to the Railroad Museum there is also the National Toy Train Museum. I donot wish/plan on doing both. Does anyone have thoughts on which one would be the better choice?

Is it possible to do both in an afternoon, we will have 11 year old grandson but a Sight & Sound show at 11am.l

You should do the museum after sight and sound so that you have time. My 11 year old son loved the museum and railroad. Enjoy!
Are you open on Saturdays and at what time?
We got passes from the library.

yes there open 7 days aweek 9to5 and 12 to 5 on sundays. be sure to take train ride its the best, and if you have kids check to see when thomas the the tank engine is there . its a real steam engine that looks like the real thomas.
