We went here in the early Fall we walked along the water. There are pedal boats to take on the water along with canoes and kayaks. There was also a festival going on as well it's a beautiful park to visit.

During the short drive to the campground, the park looked nice. That changed as soon as you entered the campground area. The road, if you could call it that, was extremely bumpy and narrow. On our drive to our site, over half the sites were occupied, but 90% of them were tents and what a mess those tent sites were. There was junk scattered around the tents and on the picnic tables. Seriously, it appeared to us that this was makeshift housing given to homeless people. We found our site, which was not level at all. However, that didn't matter because we didn't even hookup. We felt so uncomfortable that we left the site five minutes after backing in and said "goodbye" to the Park; forfeiting the $56 we had paid to South Carolina State Park Reservations. In five years of RVing, never before had we felt the need to leave a campground like we did. But never before had we seen such a mess and felt so uncomfortable in a State Park Campground or any campground for that matter.

My husband and I enjoyed our first visit to this state park. It was well maintained and we felt very safe. It's a good mix of historic interests and nature.

Improved over last visit four years ago
RV parking had approx 10 sites with full hookup
Some of the pedestrian bridges have been upgraded
The bike/pedestrian trails have better maintenance
I even saw one staff member cleaning the entrance rails to the campground,
We visited friends in the Columbia area as we lived there until 2011. With the RV, it was a pleasant stay. We biked and hiked almost every morning

Arrived on a Friday. We are weekend or 3 day campers right now at this point in our life. Liked this park a lot. Not so much our campsite so beware We have a 30 ft. Appropriate pull behind RV. The site number 79 wasn’t the best. We went by the state park website. Not able to use fire pit ..and we use it even in the summer
It was washed out pretty bad so it would been a tough pull thru site. We backed in and made the best of it. Loved the paddle boats very good deal for 10 dollars an hour
Our campground host was great! Very informative… not all are like this. There are some full sites with sewer in the lower loop Overall good weekend just very disappointed with our campsite. Also take an extension the electric and water are a good distance from our RV
Now on to next adventure

We love the volunteer's welcoming and passion of us coming from Texas and explaining everything to us about the park. Park is well labeled, the restrooms are clean, and overall enjoyed the peacefulness of the park.

We liked that there were trails as short as half a mile or as long as 3 plus miles. It is a wonderful spot of nature oasis just outside Columbia SC; opened in 1940 and built by the CCC starting in 1933. You can rent boats at the park office. There is a small lake. It is not a huge state park but how wonderful there is a 2 acre dog park and a splash pad for the kids. You have to get a permit at the park office and show proof of vaccinations and spay or neuter which I think is an excellent idea. They sell a daily dog park permit or you can get an annual. We visited while waiting for our dog to get finished with eye surgery and wished we lived in the area. What a great resource for the community.

This is very nice park with trails, paddle boats for rent, picnic shelters and a great playground for children. Restrooms available near the playground and small campground. The Loop Trail starts at the Retreat area and is clearly marked by a pink blaze. The trail is about 3.5 miles long and is very easy to hike. Part of the trail is also used by bikers but it is a very quiet and peaceful trail. There is no great scenery, just the wonderful fragrance of pines and jasmine. A lovely way to spend an afternoon!

We all had a great time and the kids loved the pedal boats. They have very clean bathrooms and the splash pad is amazing in the summer to cool off. The rangers were all very helpful. The playgrounds were both very shaded which is very important.

I stopped by Sesquicentennial for some hiking because Harbison State Forest closed their trails due to heavy rain. Sesqui had 10+ miles of trails which were all in good order even with the heavy rains. There is a $6 entry fee for adults aged 16-64, and a park store with a smattering of souvenirs and helpful rangers. The biking trail was beautiful, and not at all crowded on a Wednesday morning. I passed 3 people over the course of five miles. There is a small lake in the middle, and I’m sure summer is a very popular time here. So glad to find such a suitable backup for my rain soaked hiking plans.

There are spots that could handle almost anything. The roads are pretty bad and a lot of sites are not very level but I still like it there. Your best bet is to call the ranger directly at the park. They are always helpful and can help you reserve a site that works.

What were the rest rooms like in the camping section- & was it noisy since it is an urban area- any suggestions on site numbers for camping?

It was actually quite quiet for its location. I live 15 mins from the park and visit the day use area often as I have little kids. The bathrooms are typical old as heck state park brown paint units. Served purpose ok. I was surprised when we camped that one of the shower stalls was not in service. What size rig do you have? I feel the best sites are 67 and 68. Both are level an gravel. Both can be reserved via website. 68 does have a longer driveway if your rig is long. All other sites are dirt/sand and change due to rain and erosion. Hope this helps. It is a nice place, we will try camping there again once it gets cold. Hopefully it will help with the ticks.
