I had no idea that Lead, SD held so much history in this little town. We really enjoyed learning about the Homestake Gold mine and all the scientific discoveries made from this site. Definitely take the time to visit while visiting the Black Hills.

Originally being from South Dakota, just the history of the Homestake Gold Mine intrigued me. Getting to see it in person for the first time and looking around the visitor center and hearing the history makes it truly amazing what those people went through to dig out that gold!

Such an interesting place to visit. History, mining and science in one stop! The view of the cut out and the corresponding information boards was super cool. We didn’t know what to expect but what a great surprise. It was free and had ample parking. The staff was super friendly and it had a nice gift shop.

Parking is free, museum is free. Theres a great viewing window to see the huge open pit mine. Its quick to see and if you want to read, there's several big displays to explain all the details. Also look in the parking lot, they have many pieces of mining equipment to see.

Beautifully designed exhibit featuring mostly the history of the mine and lab. Open cut mine in back is stunning and allows views (through the window) of multiple exposed geological features. Science and engineering is also touched on.

Great trip. We arrived at approximately 10:30 am and made our way inside the visitor center. Admission into the visitor center was free, which is always a plus. We did pay a small additional fee to hop on a bus and take a guided tour of the hoist room, which was located several miles away. We took a short bus ride to the hoist room, where we were able to see the above ground operations. The tour guide was knowledgeable about the area and the various experiments being conducted in the mine. The bus tour lasted roughly an hour and we were brought back to the visitor center. There were several informational plaques out for display, that detailed the history of the site and the importance of neutrinos. There was an observation deck connected to the visitor center that gave us sweeping views of the open cut.
Tip: I recommend spending 2.5 hours here if you truly want to see everything.

We found the information here to be very helpful in learning the history of the mine and the town. The part we didn't expect was how they are now using the old mine shafts for scientic studies.
The huge open pit mine out back is really something to see.

Wish we could have gotten here a little sooner when the visitors center was open, so we could see deeper into the mine. But we could see some of it about halfway down and it was quite impressive.

Thanks for your review. The underground locations are not open to the public, so you definitely got to see the open-cut as you would if the visitor center was open. We're still sorry we missed you, but you can learn more about the science at Sanford Underground Research Facility at sanfordlab.org.

Many facts never made it into the mine history. Number of workers, number of those killed, actual amount the owners earned, or the quality of work conditions. They alluded to the facts of the mine destroying others property by showing the collapse of various parts of town because the greedy mine owners trespassed and illegally mined under land owned by other people. The theft of land and minerals from the Lakota and Sioux Native Americans is an appalling action that our government aided - white men became millionaires or richer while the Natives were starved, cheated, and robbed. The families of the employees also suffered but little mention is made of their hard work and sufferings. The lab that now has possession is using large amounts of tax dollars to perform experiments. The video states how they "plan to be culturally sensitive" yet that extends to a garden of native plants. The Homestake mine was a great employer who destroyed large parcels of land, went beyond their claim boundaries, then "donated" the mess to the government - in many states the eye site would have been forcefully reclaimed. The rich owners became exceptionally wealthy then discarded the mess for tax payers to deal with. Very disappointed and disgusted with the lack of transparency, facts, and truth about the mine.

My grandfather, Antonio Cracco, worked for the Homestake in the 1900's. When we visited Lead, Deadwood and Rapid City in the early 1960's, we still had relatives living in Lead and Deadwood. My grandmother told us our grandfather was killed in the mine. I have doubts about this story since they were divorced in 1911. Are there any records dating that far back?

Lawrence County has records. The Lead Library is good source. Also, try the Adams Museum.

Hello! We do not have gold panning right here at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center, but just 2 blocks up the street at the Black Hills Mining Museum, you can. Gold panning is also available at the Broken Boot Gold Mine in Deadwood. Thanks for your interest!

Is there an opportunity to memorize my family members who worked in the mine?
كُتب بتاريخ 3 يوليو 2017
We do! You can put there name on a monument. We hope to have the next monument done this Spring. Call us at 1-605-584-3110 for details.
Thank you!
