‪Insight into Physics of the Universe‬
سبتمبر 2021
‪I had no idea about the existence of Sanford Lab, but it has been quite a research center for particle physics. Although I didn't take the tour, the exhibits tell the story of how the old mine has contributed to our understanding of the universe. Just outside is the excavated mine from years ago.‬

‪one of a kind story‬
يوليو 2021
‪The story of Lead, Homestake Mining Company and the development of Sanford Labs is compelling. I'm not aware of another instance where a mining operation actually morphed into something useful that became an even more positive asset for the community. Lead hosts scientists from all over the world that come to Sanford Labs. Please take the trolley tour if you have time, it's well worth it (adults $15, Seniors & kids 6 - 17, $10) . Our young tour guide, Daniel, did an awesome job telling the story. We had one stop at a building (had to put on hard hats), where he talked about the past years as a gold mine and the current use as access point to the underground labs. There's an upcoming collaboration with Fermi Labs (outside Chicago) which was interesting, since that's the area we are from. The visitor center is very nicely done, the subject matter is obviously more suited to middle school and up kids, the little ones should be fine for the amount of time you will spend there (our grandsons are 11 & 7). The gift shop has unique items that will appeal to all ages. The scope of the tunnels beneath the town is amazing.‬

‪Gold Mine to Science‬
يونيو 2021
‪We really wish we had time to do the full tour, but even so, this is a fantastic site. A full boom-bust gold mine that has now been converted to a particle research facility. The open pit is right outside and you can hit golf balls in for a donation. Otherwise the site is free. Best reason to drive through Deadwood.‬

‪It's a big hole.‬
يونيو 2021
‪The big hole was interesting and giant gear provided some great photo ops. The tiny museum was informative but the staff was a little crabby. They really prefer you pay for a tour than ask them questions. The tour includes riding around in a "vintage bus" ...their words, not mine. After a little pressing they admitted that 'vintage' means no air conditioning. As it was 95+ degrees outside, we opted to read more about it in the museum and skip the oven bus. Overall average, interesting road-side stop.‬

‪Quite the sight‬
زوجان • مايو 2021
‪Quite the sight to see the open pit mine and watching people shoot holes in one into the mine. And to learn about the history of the mine. Unfortunately they were short staffed and could not offer trolley rides the day we were there. Hopefully we’ll be able to do that next time we get out there‬

‪Excellent Visitors Center‬
مايو 2021
‪This visitors center is right in the middle of town. There is no charge to see the center. There is a nice gift shop included. This is an excellent and educational place to visit to learn about Lead, SD and the Homestake Gold Mining operation. In addition it provides a deck over looking the open pit mine which is impressive. They also operate an inexpensive trolley tour out of here that is worth taking. Glad we stopped. Enjored this more than Deadwood.‬

‪Science deep down in a hole‬
مايو 2021
‪We had to stop here and hoped we could go down to the lab, but alas, no tours underground! They are completely rebuilding their detector tank way down there with all new everything and better fluid so hope to detect WIMP soon. T-shirts with sayings like that in obligatory gift shop. Outside display of frame from previous detector tank. View of the BIG hole of the original mine. Nice informative displays talking about the project as well as gold mine artifacts and history. Lead is worth a stop to escape the mania of tourist trap Deadwood right across the road.‬

‪Educational visit ‬
بمفردك • مايو 2021
‪I stumbled upon the labs visitor center by accident. There was so much to see and learn about what is happening in Lead,SD. They were able to take old mines and keep the area sustainable by doing abs ing research. The research is unbelievable from shooting sound waves into the stone to understanding the cosmos. The day I visited the trolley tour buses were not running (too early in the season) there is a fundraiser fir the lab - Hit a Hole in One. You can drive a few golf balls into the 1.5 mile mine. ‬

‪Educational AND fun!‬
أكتوبر 2020
‪The best place to start is at the 3D structure/sculpture in the middle of the visitor's center. Hopefully you will find someone who can explain what you're looking at as there is a lot to digest about the mine and the lab. This is history and the future, all in one place! The Homestake Mining Company played an important role in the Black Hills and specifically in Lead. And if you have a family, definitely take the time to hit a "hole in one" into the Open Cut! It's fun and a priceless memory for all ages, even those who are just watching. The science taking place in the underground lab is mind-blowing.‬
