‪An unexpected surprise to learn about both history and science. Situated on an open pit mine, the view is spectacular.learn about history and science all in one place‬

‪We found the information here to be very helpful in learning the history of the mine and the town. The part we didn't expect was how they are now using the old mine shafts for scientic studies.

The huge open pit mine out back is really something to see.‬

‪Wish we could have gotten here a little sooner when the visitors center was open, so we could see deeper into the mine. But we could see some of it about halfway down and it was quite impressive.‬

Thanks for your review. The underground locations are not open to the public, so you definitely got to see the open-cut as you would if the visitor center was open. We're still sorry we missed you, but you can learn more about the science at Sanford Underground Research Facility at sanfordlab.org.

‪Many facts never made it into the mine history. Number of workers, number of those killed, actual amount the owners earned, or the quality of work conditions. They alluded to the facts of the mine destroying others property by showing the collapse of various parts of town because the greedy mine owners trespassed and illegally mined under land owned by other people. The theft of land and minerals from the Lakota and Sioux Native Americans is an appalling action that our government aided - white men became millionaires or richer while the Natives were starved, cheated, and robbed. The families of the employees also suffered but little mention is made of their hard work and sufferings. The lab that now has possession is using large amounts of tax dollars to perform experiments. The video states how they "plan to be culturally sensitive" yet that extends to a garden of native plants. The Homestake mine was a great employer who destroyed large parcels of land, went beyond their claim boundaries, then "donated" the mess to the government - in many states the eye site would have been forcefully reclaimed. The rich owners became exceptionally wealthy then discarded the mess for tax payers to deal with. Very disappointed and disgusted with the lack of transparency, facts, and truth about the mine.‬

‪This is an excerpt from our 11-day road trip to the Dakotas.

With only a few hours left before heading to the airport, we had one last activity planned in Lead. We are a very STEM focused family and just had to check out the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center.

From 1876 to 2001, the Homestake Gold Mine was the largest and deepest (8,000 ft) gold mine in the Western Hemisphere. In 1965, Dr. Raymond Davis Jr began conducting scientific experiments in a section of the underground mine. He was a pioneer in solar neutrino and astrophysics research, earning the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2002. Today the underground mine is home to the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) that continues research in dark matter and neutrino physics, as well as biology, geology and engineering disciplines.

The Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center is perched on the edge of the gold mine’s 1,000-foot open cut. There is no fee to enter. From the parking lot, we were immediately drawn to the HUGE “Davis Ring” on display, overlooking the open cut. This ring is the last surviving piece of the original 100,000-gallon tank that Dr. Davis installed for his experiments. It’s a great piece of history and an awesome photo spot too.

Inside the Visitor Center, we spent 45 minutes reading about the history of Lead and the gold mine, watching videos about Dr. Davis’s experiments, and learning about SURF. There is a suspended sculpture of the underground layout of the mine. We walked inside an authentic cage that miners used to descend deep into the mine below. Once inside, be sure to look up for an interesting virtual cage ride as former miners share stories about their time working at Homestake. Finally, we headed outside to the viewing platform for a broad view of the open cut.

Now we can talk about the good stuff, the guided tour. Thanks to early trip planning, we were able to secure spots for the Trolley Tour. Tours are offered on selected days, accommodate 25 guests, and last about 1 hr. The cost is $13 - $16 per person. Tours sell out very quickly, so making advanced reservations is highly recommended.

Our tour started in the visitor center with a review of local history and a great explanation of just how vast the mine was, using the 3D suspended sculpture as a reference. From here, we loaded onto the trolley. As we made our way through the city of Lead, our guide, Mariana, shared information about the mining process and SURF Waste Water Treatment Plant, which is still used today to treat the water pumped from underground. We received a surface tour of the Sanford Underground Research Facility and learned about several of the past and current research projects, plus a few new exciting new projects.

The coolest part of the tour was an opportunity to learn about the Yates shaft and hoistroom, which is responsible for transporting scientists and equipment to the underground laboratories more than 5,000 feet below. Built in 1939, the shaft houses the cages and pulley system, while the hoist room is responsible for converting power from AC to DC and controlling the safe operation of the system. We had an opportunity to enter the hoist room to witness the one-of-a-kind Nordberg drums and 2-inch thick ropes in action, as highly skilled operators manually controlled the movement of the cages below.

Anyone with an interest in mechanical things should look up the full explanation of how this system works and go take this tour! It’s incredible to see in person. If you’re lucky, your guide will be Mariana. In all our travels, I’m fairly certain that she is the best tour guide we’ve ever encountered. Her enthusiasm, knowledge, and ability to engage with guests was impressive.

After the tour, we stopped back inside the visitor center to visit the gift shop. This is a science lovers’ playground, with plenty of fun things to catch your eye. Fortunately, we escaped with just a couple of t-shirts and some awesome new laptop stickers for our DS (& friends).‬

‪I stopped at Homestake because I used to be in the mining industry and have always wanted to check this place out. For a family outing, it was not that great. The kids were less than impressed. For adults, it was worth the stop and visiting here doesn’t take very long. Just stopping to see the impressive man-made cut in the earth was impressive enough, and the visitors center has some interesting and informative displays that explain the history of the mine and the current physics-related research that continues to go on there. The gift shop had a lot of nice items in it and the facilities were very nice. I would recommend a quick stop if you are in the area because Homestake is a significant part of the Black Hills history, it isn’t very time consuming, and best of all…its FREE!‬

‪Good view of the mine pit. But you will come out understanding how little of the full mine is on the surface, the tunnels go down to 8000 feet below ground level and it's 134 degrees down there! Learn all about it in the visitor center. I tried to understand the mine and its history, and just skim all the scientific information about its current uses by scientists. It was free, clean, new, and a good place to spend 45 minutes or so. We did no tours, don't really need it to appreciate the mine.‬

‪Ever wanted to visit a place where you can learn about gold mining as well neutrinos and dark matter? Homestake mine was once a massive operation with hundreds of miles of tunnels thousands of feet under the ground. Once mining operations stopped the mine was repurposed into a laboratory dedicated to studying neutrinos and dark matter. I knew nothing about these but the center does a great job of explaining such that an average person like myself can understand it. Definitely make time to stop by if you are going to or coming from Deadwood, you won't regret it. ‬

‪This was not in my itinerary to go here. It was recommended by our friends who are residence of Deadwood. For sure make a quick stop here in Lead if you’re on your way to Deadwood.

Pretty cool to learn and see the mine from above ground. It was active until 1998. There are tours available.‬

‪We enjoyed seeing the mine from the fence by the parking lot, from the huge indoor window, and the observation deck. There are a lot of signs to read about everything, but I would’ve appreciated a more concise way to find out about how the mining of the gold was done and simple explanations of the research being done. We were hoping to take the trolley tour. There is a table in the center of the space that has flyers with the times and a description of the tour. We went to the cashier’s desk to get tickets, (it was 2:15) and we were told that the 2:30 trolley left about a half hour early as a last minute decision because of some students that were there. We lost out. The lady was very apologetic. ‬
