Excellent museum and tour! Gordon was our tour guide and he was informative and engaging. The museum displays are well done but the simulated mine tour shouldn’t be missed. It provides a realistic view of what life in the mines was like-without the danger of going into the mines! Definitely worth the stop

The guided tour is a must! Our tour led by Tim was excellent. He was extremely knowledgeable and so funny. He fielded any and all questions with great knowledge. Literally the only thing I wish they had would be some of the signs for sale! I would buy the signs from the lower level because they are really cool. Stickers of the signs would work also! It is a good museum for everybody.

Fun mining museum about mining in the Deadwood and Lead areas. Many artifacts and historic pictures. They also offer a guided tour of a replica mine in the basement of building. Great place to take kids.

The museum was thoughtfully put together and our guide- Debbie- was very informative. She kept our interest during the whole tour. Definitely recommended if you want to learn about mining techniques and history.

When i walked in, i thought... well. This is a little dry. But the tour that takes you into the basement led by Debra was phenomenal. She had a ton of energy and made the entire tour and industry of mining thru the ages come to light. I thought it was superbly done. Kudos to her enthusiasm.

This is a must do if you're interested in the history of the area. The docent who conducted our tour was extremely informative. I had no idea how much gold actually came out of the Homestake mine, nor how they operated. It's astonishing!! Only about 20 minutes from downtown Deadwood in Lead, SD.

My family of 4 visited the museum yesterday (kids are 6&8). Staff was friendly and informative. It was only $6 for adults, kids under 13 free! We spent about 1 hour looking thru the exhibits, including watching some short informative videos about gold mining, and the history of the town of Lead. I recommend this interesting place.

Went on a Thursday morning and practically had the place to ourselves. Couldn't get the kids to sit down for much of the video but they loved looking at the cut-away dioramas of the mine and reading about how Lead was built after the discovery of gold.

Lots of great artifacts, but the highlight is the tour of a simulated mine that gives you the history of miners and mining equioment through the ages. Very interesting and educational!

We just happened on to the place, and since it was cold and windy, decided it was a good activity. We were in for a real treat! We paid for the tour of the mine recreation and it was wonderful. Plus our guide had a grandfather, father and friends that had worked in the active mine. She was so full of information and personals stories that the time flew by. I was sad when the tour was over.

I'll let you in on a little secret-- each of our guides brings a different perspective onto the tours they conduct. While the same general information is given, each tour is unique!

We are visiting the area soon, do you offer just gold panning? If so, how much per person?

As our friend from Georgia answered, yes, we do offer gold panning inside our Museum. We guarantee you find gold, show, and help you retrieve it, and all the gold you find you take back to Wisconsin with you. We also have a self-guided museum, and, a guided tour through our simulated mine that was built by Homestake miners in order that we tell their stories moving forward.
