It's hard to miss Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Driving east or west on I-24, you have to pass under a bridge that spans what is known locally as the "Ridge Cut," a quarter-mile section of the ridge that was blasted away during construction of I-24. Missionary Ridge is a geographic feature of Chattanooga and site of the Civil War's Battle of Missionary Ridge, fought on November 24, 1863, in which Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman and George H. Thomas routed Confederate forces under Braxton Bragg and lifted the siege of the city. The ridge runs north-south for several miles and varies in width from a few feet to over 660 feet with very steep, nearly vertical sides that rise over 330 feet. The southernmost end of the ridge extends into Georgia. Today, it offers a panoramic view of Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain beyond and serves as an affluent residential area with many plaques and monuments to the battle, some of which are located in the yards of residents. Missionary Ridge is part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.

This Civil War memorial site is hard to find, using GPS/Maps, but a friend recommended it when told we'd be in Chattanooga. I wish he hadn't. Very narrow crooked and well worn streets with the actual site appearing to be overtaken by home lots and subdivisions over the years. I'd pass on this and seek out Chickamauga National Park memorial site nearby instead.

Small plots along ridge. Nice drive. Ok if you have the time and are interested in the civil war but only if you have the time. Do not cut time short at Chickamauga or Lookout Mountain to see here.

The drive along Missionary Ridge combines history with admiration for the local upper classes. The northern end of the drive is hard to find. All along the way are various signs declaring which military unit held this position. Occasionally there is a monument where some parking is allowed. Most of the signs would have to be read on foot or by bicycle as the road is very narrow and winding Some of the big houses have cannons on their front lawns.

We drove Missionary Ridge following the Civil War markers and monuments. The exquisit homes along the drive were beautiful. Unfortunately it was pouring out and we could not stop.

There are several NPS "reserves" along the ridge, which was the final battle in the Chattanooga Campaign, causing the removal of CSA General Braxton Bragg. The reserves are nestled in between houses, with several signs and monuments along the route - all in private property, so be courteous. The route on top of the ridge has wonderful views of Lookout Mountain and downtown Chattanooga, so I would recommend a sunset drive for some great pictures. There is parking at each of the NPS areas.

Unlike a lot of Civil War sites, this one is tucked away and represents just a tiny sliver of what was originally fought over. But, despite its meager size, its an important stop for any real buff. I recommend you do your reading before you see it to make understanding the players and all the moving parts much easier.

Beautiful ridge with gorgeous views the Chattanooga East & West. Many monuments to the battles of the Civil War. Historic homes dot the ridge from end to end.

I didn't feel it was a good value for the money -- short train ride with longer visit at the switching yard. It was interesting, but I would have preferred a 55 minute RIDE for $22.

Missionary Ridge is amazing for it's Civil War history and significance. My family and I really enjoyed exploring the monuments to the Civil War units, both North and South, who fought here. There are impressive, must see monuments all along the way but the traffic along this road is dangerous. There are many blue and red historical markers to read but many are completely inaccessible due to being in a curve (I was almost rear ended twice) or in someone's yard with no pull off. Let me stress that due to the traffic speeding thru the area at twice the posted speed limit there not many ways to see these signs without risk. Honestly, this area should have been preserved by the Park Service instead of allowing people to build houses all over the top of the ridge but what is done is done.
A solution to this problem would be to consecutively number all of the red and blue signs with large highly visible numbers. They could correspond those numbers to a printed booklet availble from the NPS that has the exact the contents of the sign in print form that you could read as you go. Were they to fix the accessibility issues it would make the visit much more meaningful.
