‪I visited this well-preserved fort, containing some original buildings and some replicas, gaining insight into the first white settlers of Knoxville, and the town's beginnings. The collection provides a solid link between life on the Tennessee frontier and the older communities of North Carolina. I would like to have seen more information on the interaction between these first settlers and the indigenous Cherokee of the region.‬

‪We really enjoyed touring James White’s Fort. The gentleman in the gift shop was so pleasant and inviting. He gave us a military discount and offered to answer any questions we had while on the tour. He even came out and provided us with nuggets of history about the fort and Tennessee. Very nice stop on our way through Knoxville. He also provided us with a brochure that listed other historical sites located in Knoxville. Make time, you will not regret it.‬

‪OK, so in my opinion, it's not really a "fort" but a village/compound that has a fence around it. Regardless of how you define it, this is an interesting place to visit nonetheless. Walk through the doors, and it feels like a step back in time. The buildings are teeming with artifacts and displays from days gone by. A plus is that pets are welcome. Admission includes a multi-page document that provides incredible details about the compound and what life was like for those who lived there. ‬

‪This was a neat little fort in downtown Knoxville. The fort is a replica; however, the main house and kitchen are original buildings from the 1780s when James White settled the area. There is onsite parking, cheap admission, a small gift shop, and plenty of things to see and learn about the founding of Knoxville.‬

‪See Knoxville as it was when first founded. This stockade surrounded fort has several historic buildings that are furnished with period pieces. The staff are very knowledegable about the history of the fort and area‬

‪What a cute little token of a Fort in the city. It was a fun self guided and self paced stroll with my hubby on a weekday. We enjoyed the history and artifacts on display, some of the items we hadn’t seen before of course. The key wind up meat rotisserie in the kitchen was a new one for me. We forget how little waste they created Since they put everything to use in this Fort- The ashes into lye soup, ALL the pig parts, and more. Check out the sugar cone in the main house. They put the sugar into the mouth first and then the tea. I’m sure the British high tea ladies would have had a fit! Lol Thanks for being open on a Monday by the way! A great place to park and then get on the blue line trolley. Take your camera too. ‬

‪James White was one of the very first settlers to come to what is now Knoxville. James White's Fort is what was his compound in the very early days. The original home was a block away where a parking lot forced the move of the buildings. Visitors can see what is was really like living on the frontier in the late 1700's. the kitchen is equipped as it was in the early days, as is the main house with beds, chamber pots, and all. Other houses include the smoke house, weaving house, guest house, and blacksmith house. This is an extremely well-preserved and wonderful presentation of the very early history of the city of Knoxville. Modest admission charge, free parking, and small but well-stocked gift shop. Tours are self-guided but staff is always available to assist. ‬

‪The 'Fort' was, in deed, a first fort establishing Knoxville by the White family. But they lived in it well into the 1900s. The self-guiding tour is very complete and very detailed on where to look, what was original, what is a period-but-replaced piece, and little stories of the family, the fort, and early Knoxville. What isn't original is faithfully replicated and historically accurate. I cannot imagine how this place escaped the bulldozer but glad it did.‬

‪Just minutes for downtown, this fort, although small, is worth the trip. Walk through the building and see how things use to be‬

‪We visited the Fort a couple of weeks back, it was actually closed when we arrived as they were having some rennovations done. When we told them that we had come all the way from London and especially want to take a look, the owner came out and opened up the side gate to let us in. There was no one else there and he allowed us to tour the whole site on our own. There is so much history and his knowlege was second to none. He explained all about how the Fort came about and how it was where Knoxville was "born". it is a wonderful place to visit if you like history, I would thoroughly recommend it.‬
